ADVANCED PORTFOLIO EVALUATION- SOPHIE LEE

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

TO GATHER AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ON MY FINAL PIECE MY GROUP AND I CREATED A FOCUS GROUP ON FACEBOOK WHERE WE INVITED PEOPLE TO VIEW OUR VIDEO AND ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS. WE SET 5 QUESTIONS THAT THEY HAD TO ANSWER ABOUT OUR MUSIC VIDEO WHICH WERE ORIENTATED AROUND HOW THEY THOUGHT OUR MUSIC VIDEO WAS GOOD AND WHETHER THEY ENJOYED.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE STORYLINE?

The first question that we asked was about whether they understood the storyline to the video. From my questionnaire that I created for research I found that it was important for the viewer to understand the storyline if they liked the video. As a result of this we wanted to make our heartbreak storyline easily understandable. All the people that responded to this question stated that we did understand the storyline that we had created. I think that it was easy for them to understand the storyline as we made it clear through the video that the character had gone to the beach to leave there broken relationship behind, emphasised by the burning of the photograph and deleting of the message.

DO YOU THE LOCATION IS SUITABLE FOR THE STORYLINE?

We also asked the people that we added to the focus group whether they thought that the location for our music video was suitable for the storyline. We found that everyone found our location of a beach suitable. This is probrably because the beach we filmed it on was a secluded beach where there was not many people therefore showing the character had the time and space to think about what was going on.

WHAT GENRE DO YOU THINK THE VIDEO IS?

The genre of the music video we created was pop/indie. We asked our focus group what genre of music they though our music video was and most people said that it was of the pop genre. This shows that we portrayed the conventions of existing pop music videos for the audience to think that our video was a pop video. The clear conventions that we used were the use of a topic which was based around love and the video resolving around one central character. These conventions are the conventions in which I found from my research into existing music videos.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THIS VIDEO?As well as questions about the storyline and genre of the music we also asked what them what they liked about our music video. On person replied that the phone section of the video was the part that they liked. This section is where the main character looks at the phone which shows a text message of her ‘ex’ boyfriend and then a shot of birds flying dissolve into it. I think that this scene has been successful as it flowed fluently and created the feeling that she wanted to be set free. Another person stated that they liked the burning photograph at the end as it symbolises the end of the relationship effectively. I think that this was effective as it stands out clearly from the rest of the video as the video is quite dull whereas the burning photograph is quite bright. Our choice of location was also liked as it was described to be adventurous and unique.

WHAT IMPROVEMENTS CAN WE MAKE?The one main critic in which we received when we asked what improvements we could make was the miming in the video.. The miming in the video was out of time with the lyrics in some sections of the song which therefore did not give the video a professional feel. We found it difficult to match all the movements of the characters mouth with the lyrics as it was moving at different speeds in different shots. It was very hard to match it up identically by slowing down or speeding up the shot therefore we did it as effectively as we possibly could.

If I was to create this video again I would focus on improving the miming. I would do this by taking multiple shots of the scenes in which the characters mouth is shown to be singing. By doing this I would then be able to choose which one fits my music video the best and delete the rest of them. If I was to do it again I would also shoot some more footage whilst we were at the beach as when we got to editing we found that some of the footage that we shot was not unusable therefore we had to use some shots more than once to fill the gaps.
