1  Total Hip Replacement

* Surgical procedure that the diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint is surgically replaced with artificial materials.

* The most common type of arthritis leading to total hip replacement is degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) of the hip joint.

* Surface replacement of the hip is an alternative to traditional hip replacement for the treatment of conditions such as osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, and post-traumatic arthritis.

Surface Replacements

* Advantage to a surface replacement is that the preservation of bone allows for a much larger ball size. This allows for greater stability of the hip joint prior to dislocation. The dislocation rate after surface replacement of the hip is about 10 times lower than for a traditional hip replacement.

Ceramic Type Implants

* Ceramic hip replacements have been developed in an effort to decrease the wearing out of hip implants.

* The newest ceramic hip replacement implants do not wear nearly as much as metal and plastic implants.

* Ceramic hip replacements look to be a reasonable option for patients who may be at risk for wearing out of the hip implant. Patients who are in their 40s and 50s may benefit from these ceramic hip replacements.
