rooted in researchTM
The patent-pending Advanced Green Roof™
system was designed through applied knowledge
of scientific, green roof research. We believe that
research leads to the development of new ideas
and a better way of doing things. To accomplish
this, the principal members of AGA pursued
advanced degrees in environmental design with
a focus on green roof research from Michigan
State University, a world renowned agricultural
research institute. Our scientific research studies
produced some intriguing results and a light bulb
went off; there was a need for some new green
roof technology out there. The result was
development of the revolutionary Advanced Green
Roof™ system. Our research has been recognized
through presentations and publications by the
American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA),
United States Environmental Protection Agency
(USEPA), Council of Educators in Landscape
Architecture (CELA), and Green Roofs for Healthy
Cities (GRHC). AGA is continually researching
new product ideas and techniques to improve the
green roofs we provide to our customers.
Slope Stabilizers (sloped applications only)
AGR slope stabilizers are designed for use on sloped
roofs to prevent soil erosion and soil slump. Soil erosion
can negatively affect plant health by reducing soil structure,
quality, stability, and texture. AGR slope stabilizers also
reduce the amount of sediment leaving the green roof, which
can enter receiving water bodies.
Bio-Wall
AGR bio-degradable sidewalls decompose after installation
to create a 3” monolithic soil profile, which functions like a
complex landscape ecosystem. This maximizes water and
nutrient transfer across the green roof system and prevents
plants from becoming root bound.
Aqua-Mat
AGR Aqua-Mats maximize water retention and control critical
soil moisture and temperature levels. Water is spread evenly
across the green roof system and delivered directly to plant
roots to produce healthy, uniform plant growth.
Tray Module
AGR tray modules are designed with a false bottom to
promote positive drainage and air movement underneath
the plant roots. Air to the root zone means healthy growing
roots working hard to supply the rest of the plant with water
and nutrients while keeping diseases in check. This also
allows the green roof to be easily removed and replaced for
repairs.

Adding sub-surface drip irrigation to the Advanced Green Roof™ system is simple. While
irrigation is not required in the AGR system, we recommend it, not only because it is a
great insurance policy during drought, but it promotes healthy, robust, thriving plants that
will maximize your green roof. This will increase benefits such as evaporative cooling, air
pollution filtration, stormwater management, carbon sequestration, and aesthetics. AGR
subsurface irrigation is more effective in delivering water directly and evenly to the root
system with little or no evaporative loss.
Patent Pending Sub-Surface Irrigation Technology
Overhead irrigation systems are wasteful of water and encourage surface rooting which is vulnerable to
extreme temperature and moisture stress. Also, weed seeds are less likely to germinate if the substrate
surface is kept dry, meaning subsurface irrigation can lead to less maintenance requirements by watering
underneath the surface. AGR subsurface irrigation is invisible, easy to install and has no moving parts to
adjust or repair. Simply, place the AGR tray modules on the roof and insert drip irrigation lines through the
integrated irrigation channels and you’re done. The drip lines can be connected to an irrigation source at
any time you’re ready.

Advanced Green Roof is the only modular system that can offer an integrated, capillary
subsurface irrigation system. AGR’s tray module includes an integrated irrigation channel
that allows for drip lines to be inserted through the module during installation. These drip
lines supply water to the Aqua-Mats which line the bottom of the tray module. Plant roots
grow down through the soil profile and touch the Aqua-Mats so that water is delivered
directly to the root zone. The Aqua-Mats spread water evenly across the entire roof to
promote uniform plant growth and control soil temperature and moisture levels. This
innovative technology simplifies irrigation on a green roof and ensures long lasting beauty.
Drip lines are connected to an irrigation lateral line after being inserted through the modules using
simple T-connectors. The lateral line is connected to the main irrigation line which is linked to the
water source. Each drip line contains emitters on 12” spacing so that each tray receives sufficient
watering.
Plant roots grow down through the soil profile and touch the Aqua-Mat so that water is delivered
directly to the root zone for maximum water efficiency. The Aqua-Mats distribute water evenly
across the entire roof surface to ensure uniform plant growth.

AGR™ Pre-Grown Set-in-Place is delivered to the project site fully vegetated with your choice
of preferred plant mixes for an instant green roof. The plants are cultivated in the AGR trays
by our professional horticulturists to ensure healthy plants upon project delivery. AGR™ Pre-
Grown Set-in-Place includes our Bio-Wall technology so that it can be installed in a modular
fashion. The Bio-Walls decompose after installation to create a 3” deep, monolithic soil
profile. This allows AGR™ Pre-Grown Set-in-Place to function like a traditional built-up system
by maximizing water and nutrient transfer across the green roof system and preventing root
bound plants.
AGR™ Pre-Grown Set-in-Place ensures long lasting green roof beauty through our Bio-Wall
and Aqua-Mat technology. Green roof plants thrive within the AGR™ system to produce an
instant, seamless green roof.

AGR™ Pre-Grown Built-in-Place consolidates complex green roof layers into an
interconnecting, modular drainage layer, making installation simple and efficient. AGR™
Pre-Grown Built-in-Place provides endless design flexibility by allowing varying soil depths
and greater plant selection. Green roof media is brought to the rooftop after the AGR™
tray module is in place and plants can be installed using sedum cuttings, perennial plugs,
or sedum mats. AGR™ Pre-Grown Built-in-Place is a cost effective solution for any green
roofing project and over the course of time produces the same benefits of our Set-in-Place
system.
AGR™ Pre-Grown Built-in-Place simplifies traditional plant-in-place green roof systems by combining
all the necessary components into a single, modular system. The roof deck remains easily accessible
for maintenance, no need to cut and remove sections of green roof layers, simply lift the modules and
access the desired area.

Christian Reformed Church National Headquarters, located in
Grand Rapids, MI has become certified as a national wildlife habitat by
the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). More than 20 different varieties
of plants, varying soil depths, perching structures, and gravel swaths
were installed on the green roof to promote wildlife habitat. The rooftop
provides the four basic elements needed for certification by the NWF:
food, water, cover, and places to raise young.
Green roofs can be designed to create wildlife habitat in urban areas
where vegetation and natural habitat have been destroyed due to building
development. Extensive green roofs that lack species diversity and landscape
structure have a reduced capacity to support bird or insect communities.
AGR™ Built-in-Place Biodiverse creates a complex landscape structure that
attracts more bird and insect species, effectively increasing the biodiversity
on your green roof. Varying soil depths along with combinations of perennials,
grasses, sedum mats, plugs, and cuttings are used to create a true landscape
design on your roof. Habitat structures, such as logs and gravel swaths can
be incorporated for use by a variety of birds and insects. AGR™ Built-in-Place
Biodiverse is a unique concept that provides more habitat and biodiversity
than most green roofs, which only incorporate sedum and minimal landscape
structure.

AGR™ Sloped is designed specifically for use on pitched roofs by incorporating slope
stabilizers and integrated subsurface irrigation technology. Sloped green roofs require
special design considerations for roof aspect, solar incidence, erosion control, and drainage.
AGR™ Sloped integrated subsurface irrigation controls critical soil temperature and moisture
levels, which can be problematic on pitched roofs, while slope stabilizers prevent surface
erosion and soil slump. Our sloped system can be installed either Set-in-Place or Built-in-
Place. Set-in-Place systems provide maximum erosion control on steep slopes, but Built-
in-Place systems are a viable option for low pitched roofs. Special edging details may be
required to handle the downward force of the green roof, but we can help you with that.
South facing slopes can be problematic for green roof applications because of extreme
temperatures experienced on the roof due to direct solar incidence. Adequate soil moisture
levels are critical to control extreme temperatures and create an environment that is suitable
for plant growth. AGR™ Sloped uses slope stabilizers and integrated subsurface irrigation to
create an environment that produces thriving green roofs on pitched roofs.
