FPSO Oil & Gas

FPSO Marine

Innovation through oil and gas experienceFor more than 50 years, ABB has worked closely with oil and gas companies and shipowners worldwide in order to provide innovative solutions and services that meet the strictest requirements of safety, risk management, operational excellence and sustainability.

Today, ABB is the leading supplier of power, automation and telecom solutions to the offshore oil and gas and marine industries.

ABB has a proven ability to handle large projects in automation, telecommunications, electrification and E-House offering worldwide. Our integrated solutions and total lifecycle services, make ABB the ideal partner throughout the entire lifetime of an offshore installation.

No matter geography, climate or politics, ABB has never failed to complete an oil and gas project.

ABB’s floating production solutionThe main advantage of FPSOs is that they are standalone structures that do not need external infrastructure such as pipelines or storage. Crude oil is offloaded to a shuttle tanker at regular intervals, from days to weeks, depending on production and storage capacity. FPSOs today produce from around 10,000 to 200,000 barrels per day.

The increasing sea depth for new field dominates new offshore projects at more than 100 meters water depth.

Most FPSOs are ship-shaped, with a high storage capacity and deck load. The wellheads or subsea risers from the sea bottom are located on a central turret so that the ship can rotate freely to point into wind, waves or current. A variation of FPSO uses a circular hull, which shows the same profile to wind, waves and current regardless of direction. It does not rotate and therefore does not need a rotating turret.

ABB has 50 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, with more than 1,000 projects completed worldwide and more than 50 successful FPSO projects delivered around the world.

FPSO savings and benefits

Large multiscope projects, a core competence of ABB ABB reduces risks related to administration, engineering, documentation, testing and handling interface of multi-discipline packages. By integrating automation, electrification and telecom together in large multiscope projects, ABB helps customers minimize scope expansions, schedule extensions and order changes.

E-House solutionsThe main advantage of ABB’s E-House solutions is that all systems within the house or module are wired, tested and commissioned before shipment to yard, reducing costs, risk exposure and onsite work. In several FPSO projects, ABB has successfully delivered topside E-House solutions, pre-installed with all electro systems (power management system, high, medium and low voltage, motor control center and transformers); integrated control and safety systems (process control system, process shutdown system, emergency shutdown system, fire and gas systems) and telecom systems. In addition, vendor supplied 3rd. party packages are also installed and integrated by ABB in the house or module before shipment to yard.

ABB savings for FPSOsIn a multiscope project the savings include: - 20-30% of the overall project costs. - Typically 2 months reduced delivery time (systems) by accelerated project execution and startup. ABB’s compact equipment requires less space.

- Possibility of continuous remote monitoring of system services, virus updates, monitoring servers, clients, installation of MS patches and system versions, which reduces the overall service cost.

Powerful engineering tools allow ABB to receive data from all project parties to build a transparent application that gives operators, engineers, maintenance personnel and planners a single view into the entire installation.

Other ABB benefits include: - Safety. Due to ABB’s strict compliance with international industry and safety standards, ABB ensures high quality deliveries throughout all project phases from concept to operation.

- Improved forecasting and prediction. Since there is only one

project organization supplying and coordinating packages with numerous interdisciplinary interfaces, the risks, contin-gencies and variations are minimized.

- Reliable ABB alliances that share and manage risks. ABB assembles the project team from various organizational units, which share risks.

- Operating efficiency, through integrated automation, electrification and telecom solutions, which reduces total expenses.

- Easier maintenance due to integrated working processes. - Continuous system optimization of field devices, condition monitoring, assets, simulator and scenario training.

ABB’s focus on system migration paths allows customers to upgrade existing installations without production stops.

ABB has unique patented technology products and solutions optimal for the offshore industry.
