Course Outline

• This class is designed for advanced English students to push their speaking abilities into new levels.

• There are four subjects, each broken into four topics. We will study one topic per class.

• There are four equally weighted pieces of assessment to complete in the semester.

Assessment

• Participation: 25%• This component is awarded for class

attendance.

• Presentation: 25%• Each student is expected to make a 10 minute

presentation on one of the classes topics. We will have up to three speakers each class. More information on this shortly.

• Mid-Term Examination: 25%• The mid-term examination will be conducted

in groups of 4 or 5. It will be done as a role play recreating a scene from an English or US TV show or play, 10 minutes in length.

• It’s recommended you begin preparing for this right away!

• Final Examination: 25%• The final examination will be conducted in

pairs in the form of a dialogue, lasting 10 minutes.

• The topic of the dialogue will be a secret right up to your exam, but will be related to one of the topics covered in class.

The Presentation

Your presentation will take the form a speech, which may or may not include visual aids (eg ppt). However, you are expected to deliver your speech extemporaneously.

[Extemporaneous Speech]:: A prepared speech that is nonetheless delivered without a script or complete memorization. The speaker follows an outline but forms each sentence live.

You may involve the class in your presentation (asking or answering questions, etc).

As there will be multiple speakers on each topic you should contact the other speakers to make sure you each have a unique topic. You may work together if you wish, but this is not required.

Ultimately your speech should have three components:

As we will actually debate your debatable topics, you will need to give us a preview of your speech the week before.

Lastly: The standard of the speeches is expected to rise week by week, slightly. Students who go in the first couple of weeks will be marked lighter than the later students who have had more time to prepare and more experience watching the speeches.
