Type I, or latex, allergy is an immediate immunologic reaction to proteins in natural rubber latex.

About 1% to 2% of the general population is allergic to latex. however, repeated exposure to latex greatly increases the risk of developing a latex allergy.1

• patients who have had multiple surgical procedures—prevalence of 18% to 37%2

• patients with spina bifida—at the highest risk of latex allergy with a prevalence of 20% to 67%1

• healthcare workers who work in operating rooms, laboratories, or hemodialysis centers1

Chemical allergies, also called type IV allergies, are not caused by latex but by the chemicals added during glove manufacture. It is reported that chemical allergies represent approximately 33% of occupationally induced skin diseases among certain categories of healthcare workers—making it a significant occupational disability.3

Accelerators, like diphenylguanidine (DPG), are the primary cause of chemical allergic reactions

Many hospitals worldwide have switched to non-latex gloves to reduce the incidence of allergic reactions among patients and staff. however, the incidence of chemical allergies has not decreased among staff, with about 80% being caused by chemical accelerators.6 In sweden, 13% of surgical nurses in one hospital that had switched to non-latex gloves had reactions (contact dermatitis) to dpG.7,8
