Advanced Algebra 2/Trigonometry
Syllabus
Instructor: Mr. Jason Schaffer E-mail: [email protected]
Course Description
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Geometry.
Topics will include linear functions and equations, quadratic and polynomial equations with real
and complex solutions, exponential and logarithmic equations and functions, transformations,
rational expressions, systems of equations, matrices, probability including permutations and
combinations, sequences and series, conics, and trigonometry through advanced trigonometric
identities. The student will need access to a graphing calculator on a regular basis. A TI-84 series
graphing calculator is strongly recommended.
The Advanced Algebra II/Trigonometry course covers topics in greater depth and breadth than
Algebra II. This course is the prerequisite course for enrollment in Pre-Calculus and AP Statistics.
Advanced Algebra II/Trigonometry is the recommended precollege core mathematics curriculum.

1. Use functions and their graphs to represent situations
2. Write and graph linear functions
3. Solve problems involving transformations of the linear parent function
4. Solve systems of linear equations
Second quarter
The student will:
1. Operate with matrices
2. Fit data to quadratic models
3. Use transformations to graph polynomial functions
4. Model data with polynomial models
Third quarter
The student will:
1. Solve problems involving exponents and logarithms
2. Simplify rational and radical expressions
3. Solve rational and radical equations and inequalities
4. Graph parabolas and other conic sections that are not functions
Fourth quarter
The student will:
1. Write and evaluate sequences and series
2. Measure indirectly using side lengths and angles of triangles
3. Solve problems involving trigonometric functions.
4. Solve trigonometric equations by using algebra and graphs
Evaluation Methods
The following grading system will be used for all students:
37.5% - tests 45% - first nine weeks
37.5% - chapter quizzes 45% - second nine weeks
25% - homework assessments 10% - semester final
Grading Scale
100 – 92.5 = A 76.4 – 72.5 = C
92.4 – 89.5 = A- 72.4 – 69.5 = C-
89.4 – 86.5 = B+ 69.4 – 66.5 = D+
86.4 – 82.5 = B 66.4 – 62.5 = D
82.4 – 79.5 = B- 62.4 – 59.5 = D-
79.4 – 76.5 = C+ 59.4 and down = F
Classroom Procedures/Policies
All quizzes, and tests must be done in pencil in order to receive credit.
All quizzes and tests will be graded by the teacher and returned to the student as soon as
possible.
Retakes for quizzes and tests will be offered, but they must be completed by the student
before or after school. Class time will not be allowed to make up any tests or quizzes.
Regarding retakes, the better of the two grades will be the students final grade on that
particular test or quiz. However, students will only be permitted to retake one
assessment per quarter.
Students will be required to take their final exam according to the building final exam
schedule.
Mr. Schaffer will put class notes and homework answers on edmodo. Students are
encouraged to frequent this site daily for additional assistance. The access code is fh4f5v
Attendance/Tardies
It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher for all work missed due to absences
and tardies.
Classroom Rules
1. Students are expected to treat Mr. Schaffer, their fellow classmates, and all property with
the utmost respect at all times.
2. Students should not be talking when the teacher is instructing or another student is
speaking in front of the class.
3. Students must bring all materials to class every day. (Book, notebook, calculator, pencil)
4. Students are not permitted to have any food or drink in the classroom, with the exception
of bottled water.
5. Students are not allowed to have electronic devices (cell phones, MP3s, etc.) out during
class.
