Sat, May 11 8pm David Jacobs-Strain with Bob Beach on harmonica – Delta Blues Sound <))

The Earlville Opera House features the amazing talent of emerging blues artist David Jacobs-Strain. Jacobs-Strain is a slide guitarist and modern roots singer-songwriter whose musical journey begins in the wellspring of Delta blues but explores new territory. Dirty Linen sums him up; "DJS sings and plays slide-driven country blues with a passion and authority that few artists of any age can muster. But besides firing off compelling covers of traditional tunes. . . his original songs have served to update and evolve the idiom, winning widespread respect from the contemporary blues community.”

Sat, June 8 8pm Joe Louis Walker Blues Band - Grammy-winning Blues Sound <)))) JLW has been nominated in an unprecedented 4 categories in The Blues Foundation's 2013 Blues Music Awards! JLW will be inducted into the Blues Foundation's Blues Hall of Fame this year! Multiple Grammy & WC Handy Award winner, Joe Louis Walker is one of the most heralded blues artists of our time. Last year he was nominated for 3 Blues Music Awards: B.B King Entertainer of the Year, Contemporary Blues Male Artist of the Year, and Best Instrumentalist – Guitar. “… Walker sings with a sassy upper register voice but plays like a combination of Jimi, Stevie Ray, Frank Marino, and one of his heroes, Buddy Guy…. the highlight is Walker and his guitar, and you get plenty of both, what with jumping vocals alongside a band that keeps the rhythms nailed and the atmosphere hot.” - Mark S. Tucker

Sunday, June 9 3pm Voices of Tabernacle Sound <)) “Voices of Tabernacle” is a mixed chorus combining 31 voices from Sherburne, Norwich, Hamilton, Lebanon, Madison, Earlville and Waterville. Known for their diverse and engaging repertoire that includes Great Opera Choruses, Folk Songs, Spirituals, the Best of Broadway, and popular standards. Founder and director Anita Humer has taught at The Chapin School, Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School, and headed the music departments at The McBurney School and Staten Island Academy. In addition, she accompanied the Hamilton College and Community Oratorio Society in Clinton, NY. She is also the pianist for the Colgate Symphony. For five years, she was the conductor of the Sherburne Community Chorus, and in 2000 she founded the Voices of Tabernacle

Sat, June 15 8pm and Sun, June 16 3pm Spoon River Anthology Hugh Humphreys directs the play that was adapted by Charles Aidman based on the poems of Edgar Lee Masters. "The characters are a cross-section of society: the spinster schoolteacher who expresses her maternal instinct through attention lavished on students, the town drunk who unrepentantly relates his death from cirrhosis of the liver, a lawyer (clutching his only friend in the world, a dog, which apparently followed him into the afterlife) and his embittered and cruel wife, a vamp, an inventor and legions of cast-off spouses. Spoon River was a swinging town, full of gamblers, skirt-chasers, liars, fighters, avengers and thieves -- and these are just the dead people." The Washington Times This production by Hugh Humphreys supports two of his favorite organizations - the Earlville Opera House and the National Abolition Hall of Fame.

Fri, June 21 8pm Leo Kottke – Master guitar/ Folk Sound <) One of the greatest guitar players of the last 50 years, he definitely has stories to tell between songs! Try and Stop Me, Leo Kottke’s new album encapsulates the spirit of the man himself — profoundly original, a little cantankerous perhaps, a deep talking Midwestern raconteur whose quick wit is matched by his astounding virtuosity on the six and 12 string guitars. For the past three decades, Kottke has been indefatigable in his pursuit of a unique musical vision that has placed him among the foremost acoustic guitar stylists of our time. Kottke has the ability to embrace folk idioms and pop melodies as readily as he assimilates jazz and classical influences, making him unique among guitar virtuosi.

"For all its technical brilliance, wicked syncopation and harmonic sophistication, Kottke’s music is eminently accessible."

Sat, July 6, 8pm Sweetback Sisters - Western Swing & Honky Tonk Music Sound <)) The Sweetback Sisters combine their close harmonies, charismatic stage presence and the crackling musicianship of their band with a backbeat, twangy vocals, and tasty instrumentation. Emily Miller and Zara Bode may not be blood relations, but their precise, family-style harmonies recall the best of country music from the Everlys to The Judds, as well as the spirited rockabilly energy of Wanda Jackson, one of the band’s role models. The Sweetbacks mine the traditional subjects of heartbreak, revenge, remorse and staying strong in the face of relationships gone wrong with a contemporary sensibility. “We’re a renegade retro band that mixes up country, swing and honky tonk,” explains Bode. “Sometimes what we deliver is straight out of the 50s; other times it’s BR549 meets The B52s.” They are garnering

a wild fan base with each new listener.

Sat, July 20 8pm Kim Simmonds/ Savoy Brown Acoustic show – Rockin' British Blues Sound <)))) “One of the earliest of British blues bands, Savoy Brown, with founder guitarist Kim Simmonds at the helm, helped launch the 1967 UK blues boom movement that brought blues music back to the USA invigorating the style forever. In the process, the band became part of the framework that launched the rock and roll music of the 1970’s. Their influence now stretches into modern rock as we know it today.” Kim Simmonds has 4 decades of playing the Blues and continues making new albums and taking worldwide tours. He ranks among the all-time greatest guitar players. Hear his new work from his latest Voodoo Moon to commemorate their forty-fifth anniversary, recently released on Ruf Records.

Sat, July 27 at 8pm Maybe a concert with country star Suzy Bogguss …more soon Sat, August 3 8pm Dar Williams – Folk Icon Sound <)

She's a major force on the New England folk scene. A songwriter who writes folk songs from a unique, insightful perspective, Williams takes pains to avoid the coy and the quirky; her songwriting and performing style has been compared to that of Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, but with sometimes sharp or hilarious twists. "Williams has been one of the best singer/songwriters to come out of the contemporary folk scene in the past two decades, and her material -- heartfelt, soul-searching, and often witty and full of fascinating detail -- is invariably impressive stuff." (Mark Deming, All Music.com)

Dar Williams is "one of America’s very best singer-songwriters" (Hendrik Hertzberg , The New Yorker)

Sat, August 17 8pm De Temps Antan – Virtuoso French Celtic Sound <)) Using fiddle, accordion, harmonica, guitar, bouzouki and a number of other instruments, our three virtuosos blend boundless energy with the unmistakable joie de vivre found only in traditional Quebec music. Since 2003, Éric Beaudry, André Brunet, and Pierre-Luc Dupuis have been performing time-honored melodies from the stomping grounds of Quebec’s musical past. De Temps Antan—which roughly translates as From Bygone Times—is a band made for wild applause. Their music digs deep into its French, Irish, and Scottish roots with a sound that’s fresh, contemporary, and full of life.

The band has won raves, including this review from the Wheatland Music Festival: “The fact that they were completely unknown to most festival-goers made it all the more special. When they took to the main stage late on Saturday night, no one expected this unassuming trio to get the entire crowd on their feet by the end of the first tune. Their confidence and stage presence was captivating and easily won the hearts of the crowd. With powerful vocals, driving rhythms, and good humor, this group will do great things to advance the awareness of Quebecois music far beyond their own borders.” Working on some Master Classes with these artists…please call or e-mail to sign up.

Sat, August 31 8pm Eilen Jewell – Americana Blues Sound <))) “With a burnished voice lingering somewhere between Billie Holiday and Neko Case, Eilen Jewell’s aching vocals are

pure, country-gospel, box-car soul.”

"EJ travels with her 4pc band. Since her official 2006 debut, Boundary County, Jewell has surveyed a wide range of traditional musical styles, from the folk and jug band leanings of her early recordings, through an album-length homage to Loretta Lynn and the country gospel of her work with The Sacred Shakers, right up to 2009’s Sea of Tears, which

bristled with the electricity of ‘60s UK garage rock and Chicago blues. Her latest album, Queen of the Minor Key, draws on everything from classic country to early R&B, with an emphasis on sounds from the seamier side of the tracks. With dirty sax riffs and low-slung guitars, the instrumentals that bookend the album evoke the bump-and-grind exotica of vintage Southern California suburban saloons. Yet on the flipside, Jewell imbues slow, jazzy numbers like “I Remember You” and “Only One” with torch and tenacity that linger long past last call. Eilen Jewell is the Queen of the Minor Key. Sad songs are her wealth and finery."

Sat, Sept. 14 or 28 8pm Mike + Ruthy // Farewell Drifters- ‘folk rock’ with a pop edge Sound <)) “Mike + Ruthy have become a force to be reckoned with in the acoustic music world. . . Bold banjos rule, fiery fiddles run wild, and an expansive sound that threatens to raise the rafters prevails.” – The Daily Freeman "Replete with banjo, fiddle and pedal steel, Ungar and Merenda showcase a natural chemistry shifting between catchy pop tunes, bluesy rock numbers, lush soul songs and hushed folk ballads. Million to One is a milestone achievement for the New York-based duo . . . remarkably eclectic songwriting." - The Wire "Part of a wave of new bands that are hip and edgy, but embrace acoustic instruments, songs with stories, songs with meaning, not just techno-blabber aimed at an instant-gratification society that shuns depth." - Poughkeepsie Journal Rising out of Nashville’s thriving independent music scene, the Farewell Drifters are known for their 60’s era-

inspired harmonies and adventurous musical energy. They have crafted a seamless blend of earthy foot-stomping folk rock and intellectual pop with melodic songs that openly explore the brightest and darkest corners of life with raw intensity. The Farewell Drifters have been featured by some of the nation’s leading music press including NPR, CMT.com, Paste Magazine, and American Songwriter, and in addition to the critical praise, their past two albums have charted on Billboard and the Americana Radio Chart.
