They provide the equivalent to A-level qualifications and are designed to lead you straight into university and help you to increase your future earning potential.

Debra McCannJob title:

Quality Control Manager

Course studied:

Access to Higher Education in Science

Debra had been a stay-at-home mum for five years when she started thinking about returning to work and exploring a change of career. Initially Debra was nervous to return to education but after coming to an open event and speaking to a careers adviser, she decided to take the next step.

Debra said: “I went along to a Gateshead College open event and was given some advice on which course would suit me; I was always good at science at school and knew it would be something I would excel at.

“I spoke to my career adviser at the college who convinced me that taking an Access to Higher Education Course would be enough to be able to make an application to university. After talking further I left feeling completely inspired, I wanted to reach for the stars and enrolled straight away.”

Debra enrolled on an Access to Higher Education course in Science which covered biology, chemistry and physics as well as maths.

Debra said: “I had a new found confidence, felt totally at home at the college and my three lecturers were fantastic and really approachable.

“The course is intensive, especially when you’ve been out of the educational system for a long time but you feel like the teachers want you to do as well as you can, I’ve never met anyone like my Biology teacher who had such an infectious yearning to teach and was so proud when you achieved something.”

After Debra had finished her access course, she went on to apply to Newcastle University, a Russell Group University, to study a Bachelor of Science. Debra was accepted with an unconditional offer and successfully completed her degree.

“Walking through the doors of Gateshead College completely changed my life.”
