Adult Center soon to be a reality!

For two years Helping Hands has had the dream of

opening an adult day center in Holdingford. At this

writing we are soon to become owners of a build-

ing that will become that center. The location will

be 531 Main Street, the former Blonda B’s Store,

see photo at the right.

When remodeling is completed the center will be a place where older adults

can spend time under the care of Helping Hands staff and volunteers. This cen-

ter is a response to the growing need for services that help older adults remain

safe within their communities.

There will be more information shared as the center prepared to open. In general the center

will provide activities, meals and socialization between 9 a.m.—3:00 p.m. during the week.

Participants will need to be pre-registered as we need be to conduct an pre-acceptance in-

terview and gather personal and medical information. As we will share as the center devel-

ops, an adult day activity center is different than a senior center.

Right now we are in need of volunteers to assist with all stages of remodeling. Specifically

we need help with tearing down walls, building walls, electricity, plumbing and all other

types of construction skills. Call us at 746-9960 to volunteer your skills.

Our goal is to have the building ready to open by the fall of 2016. This is truly an exciting

time for the community of Holdingford and our older adults.

Free Outing

We’re taking a bus to see comedian Jeff Allen on Tuesday July 19th at the Paramount Theatre. Both the bus ride and ticket are free, but space is limited so call us at 746-9960 to register.

Jeff’s comedy resonates with his great ob-servational style, shining a light on every-day life from growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, married life, raising kids, to the changes that he has seen in American life.

Bus departs at 11:45 from Holding-ford , 12:15 from St. Stephen Catholic Church and returns around 4:00. If you want tickets and prefer to drive on your own that is also allowed.

Holdingford Daze Volunteers Needed

Have you even considered joining our volun-teer team? During Holdingford Daze we need several volunteers for our many projects — Bingo, bake sale, surrey rental and raffle ticket selling. This is a great way to connect with your community and see friends. It’s one small thing we can do to make our cor-ner of the world a little bit better. Diane can help you find a fun assignment. Call her at 746-9960.

When we all provide a helping hand — to-gether we are the ones who make this work.

Let’s make some dough with our famous coffee cakes!

This year we will be having our Bake Sale on both the evening of July 8 and all day 9th during Holdingford Daze. Would you consider making some coffee cakes, bars or cookies to support this fundraiser? We can even provide the flour and sugar for you if you wish.

Consider that your coffee cake helps us support our neighbor network of helping our elderly and those with special needs. You can drop your baked goods off July 7th or 8th at our office (8 a.m. — 4 p.m). Call Di-ane if you have any questions at 746-9960.

Preventing Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when

the body loses too much bone or makes too little bone. As a result a person’s bones become weak

and break more easily.

The picture at the right illustrates a bone under a

microscope. As you can see bones are like a

honeycomb. The left image shows a normal

bone. The right image shows a bone suffering

from Osteoporosis.

Activities to improve your bone health and prevent Osteoporosis include low impact aero-

bics, walking, skiing, yoga, weight lifting and exercise bands.

Including more Calcium and Vitamin D in your diet can also help keep your bones strong

and healthy. Milk and dairy foods are natural sources for calcium. Some milk, dairy foods,

juices, and cereal are fortified with vitamin D. Fatty fish (salmon, tuna) are also great

sources of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin because you can absorb it from the sun. But dur-

ing the winter vitamin D absorption is a challenge because our skin is covered with cloth-

ing and in the summer sunscreen blocks our skin’s ability to absorb vitamin D.

As we age our nutritional needs for both Calcium and vitamin D increases. Staying active

and eating healthy can help keep your bones strong and can make you less susceptible to

injuries from falls. Classes like Tai Chi and A Matter of Balance™ offered by Helping Hands can also help improve balance, build strength and prevent falls.
