The Washington Daffodil Society is honored to host the 50th anniversary convention of the American Daffodil Society. Our committees have been working for many months to bring you an event worthy of this significant milestone in the history of our society. The founding meeting of the ADS was convened in Washington DC in 1954 and tl the .11-si convention was held here in 1956. We are proud to be hosting the eeleb1;iti,„,of it ,; year his- tory here once again. We welcome you to the nation's :Hid to what we hope will be a memorable event.

The 50th anniversary of an organization is a time for )1. lin , to (he and to the future. The ADS Founders' Lounge will accomplish the I n');i of these two tasks. This unique aspect of this year's event will celebrate those that have made the ADS the organization it is today. Spend some time looking through scrapbooks and reading about the history of the ADS. Learn about the men and women whose vision and persistence formed our national or-ganization. Many of our show awards are named after these individuals, but where were they from and what contributions did they make to the ADS? Friday evening's unveiling of The American Daffodil Society: The First Fifty Years will provide each of us with a book we can read and cherish li ar years to come. We hope you will participate in our book signing party where those featured in this publication will be available to sign books.

But what of the future? There is much opportunity to develop and protect the species. New forms will be recognized and stabilized. The range of color and form will continue to be extended as hybridizers reach for their imagina-tions. Will there ever be a blue daffodil? More effective disease and pest control will be required as toxic chemicals are removed from the market. And the Daffodil Journal, our quarterly publication, will evolve as we reach out to those whose interest in daffodils is in the garden as well as the show bench. It is critical that we continue to reach out to new members to revital-i/c our organization and carry it through the next 50 years. We need your idea,. on how the ADS can make itself an even stronger organization as we loi to our future. We hope you will share your thoughts and ideas in the lotmdeis' Lounge.

Welcome to (he ADS 50th anniversary convention and the next 50 years!

Saturday Luncheon Speaker—Brent Heath Brent Heath is a third generation bulb grower and co-owner of Brent and

Berl v ',v Bulbs, a wholesale/retail mail-order flower bulb catalogue and web site business. Brent and Becky have a 10-acre display garden and trial farm where they currently grow over 3000 cultivars and species of all types of bulbs in combination with annuals, perennials and groundcovers.

Brent and Becky have co-authored Daffodils for North American Gar-dens and Tulips for North American Gardens. They each have over 300 color photographs, are marvelous sources of inspiration for the novice and are valuable references for the professional.

Brent and Becky have received numerous prestigious awards for horti-cultural leadership, promoting the use of a wide variety of bulbs in the gar-den, and commercial horticultural excellence. After a yearlong study, The Wall Street Journal voted 'Brent and Becky's Bulbs' the 'Best Bulb Com-pany in America'. And in April 2003, The American Daffodil Society awarded Brent the Gold Medal of Honor for popularizing and promoting the use of daffodils.

Through slide lectures and workshops, Brent shares his love of garden-ing and enthusiasm for teaching, giving you many new ideas that will help you have more colorful and successful gardens. Saturday Dinner Speaker—Brian Duncan

Brian Duncan is one of the best known and most successful daffodil hy-bridizers and exhibitors in the world. Few hybridizers are better represented in our collections, and in our show entries. His success in the diitiodi I world is exemplified by his winning England's Englehart ('up. awarded for daffodils bred and raised by the exhibitor, seven times het \\ 1985 and 2002. Brian has also had many successes in the United States. In 1986 The ADS awarded him its highest medal of honor, the Gold Medal, for his contributions to the daffodil. Since then he has won the ADS Hy-bridizer's Trophy, for daffodils bred and raised by the exhibitor, six times. Brian has served on the ADS Board of Directors for many years and has attended numerous ADS Conventions along with his wife Belly. No con-vention is complete without them.

Brian Duncan's interest in daffodils started as an amateur in the early 1960s and in 1964 he began hybridizing. He \eil)11 the RHS Daffo- dil and Tulip Committee for over 30 years, the I.r.i nine of which as Chair- man. Fle is currently a member of the RHS I I and Tulip Yearbook Committee, the London Daffodil Show Schedule Committee, the RHS Tri-als Committee, and the liairntan of the RI IS Narcissus Classification Com-mittee. He is a foundiii , iiii•inher and past chairman of the N.Ireland Daffo-dil Group and current cl1;111111.in 01 his local Omagh Gardening Society.
