PhotoAdjustmentsPhotoshopcanadjustimagesinmanydifferentways.Someadjustmentsaredestructive.Thismeansyouaresomehowchangingpixelsandyoulosetheoriginalimage.Otheradjustmentscanbecreatednondestructivelysotheimageisneverharmedandyoucanalwaysgetbacktotheoriginalandeditinotherways.CropToolOneofthemostcommonwaystoadjustanimagewouldbetoadjustthesize.Usingacroptool,youcansavejustpartofanimagemakingtheimagesmaller.Croppingcanalsogiveyouadifferentlookbydeletingunnecessaryareasandkeepingjustwhatyouwantandframingtheimageinthewayyouwant.Croppingwouldbeadestructiveeditoradjustment.CroptoolWhenusingthecroptool,youcanselectarectangleboxanddeleteeverythingoutsidethatbox.WiththeOptionsbar,youcanconstrainyourcropselectionsoitwillonlyselectaspecificsizewithaspecificresolution.Youcancropoutsideoftheimagetoaddcanvasspace.Youcanstraightenbycheckingtheperspectiveboxontheoptionsbarafteryoucreatethecropbox.
Thendragthecornersofthecropboxtoparallelwiththehorizonoftheimage.Thiswouldbeawaytomakeallimagesthesamesize.Setthecropandthencropallimagesinagroupwiththesamesettings.Anondestructivewaytoblockoutpartsofanimagewouldbetouseamask.

AdjustmentsOtherAdjustmentssuchasBrightness/Contrast,HueandSaturation,BlackandWhite,etc.donttakeawayanypartsofanimage,buttheydoalterthewaytheimageslook.AdjustmentscanbemadedirectlytotheimagebychoosinganadjustmentfromtheImage>AdjustmentsMenu.Whenyoucreateanadjustmentinthisway,youareaffectingtheoriginalimageandalteringpixels.Ifyoudothisthebestpracticeistocreateacopylayerandmakecorrectionstothecopylayer.
AdjustmentPanelThere is another way to make adjustments to images inPhotoshopthatisnondestructive(doesnotdamageordeleteanypixelsintheoriginalimage).ThatistocreateanadjustmentlayerandusetheAdjustmentPanel.TheadjustmentsdepictedbyiconsareBrightness/Contrast,Levels,Curves,ExposureVibrance,Hue/Saturation,ColorBalance,BlackandWhite,PhotoFilter,ChannelMixer,Invert,Posterize,Threshold,GradientMap,SelectiveColor.Photoshopaddedbuilt inAdjustment Presets. Thepresetscan be used to add adjustments quickly or they can be astartingpointandyoucanthenaddyourownadjustments.Adjustmentlayerscanbeedited,youcanusemultipleadjustmentlayersandsetopacity.Tosaveadjustmentlayerstoeditlater,makesureyousaveinaformatthatsaveslayerssuchasthepsdfileorthetifffile.
WhenyouchooseanadjustmentfromtheAdjustmentPanel,youarepresentedwithdropdownsand/orsliderstoalterthewayyourimagelooks.

LevelsAdjustmentThisisaLevelsadjustmentpanel.LevelaffectstheBrightnessofanimage.TheLevelspanelshowsaHistogram.Thisshowsthespreadoftonalvalueswithintheimage.TheHighlightsareontherightsidewithawhitesliderandtheShadowsareontheleftsidewithablacksliderandthemiddlegraysliderrepresentsthemidtonesofanimage.Thishistogramshowsaspreadacrossthebrightnessvaluesoftheimage.

ThisHistogramshowsaconcentrationofdarksintheimage.Byusingtheslidersinthispanel,youcoulddragthewhiteslidertothelefttoincreasethebrightnessintheimage.Therearealsodropdownsthatarepresettoadjustcertainpartsofanimage.Forexamplethepresetcouldincreasecontrastorlightenshadows.Ifyouclickonthedefaultinthedropdownitwillbringtheadjustmentbacktotheoriginalimage.Sometimesjustpartsofanimageneedadjustment.Inthatcaseyoumaywanttomakeaselectionoftheareaneedingadjustmentandthenaddtheadjustmentlayer.

Inthisexercisewewillusethelevelsadjustmentlayertobrightenadarkareaofapicture.Thenwewillcorrectthecoloroftheimage.1.OpentheMittenwald.jpgfile.Thecloudsandskylookgood,butthebuildingsareintheshadowsandtoodark.CreateaduplicatelayerandnameitBuildings.Toggleoffthebackgroundlayer.2.Makeaselectionofthebuildingswiththepolygonalormagneticlassotool.RememberyoucanuseQuickmaskmodeifnecessary.3.Addanadjustmentlayerbyclickingtheaddadjustmentlayericonandchooselevels.4.Thelevelsdiagramboxopens.TryusingtheAutobuttonandseeifthatcorrectstheproblemofthedarkbuildings.Ifthatdoesnotdowhatyouwant,presstheresetbutton.ResetandthenmovethesmallgraytrianglebelowtheHistogramtoadjustthemidtones.Movingitslightlytotheleftwilllightenthearea.Makesurethepreviewboxischeckedandyoucanseethechangesasyoumovethesliders.Youwantthebuildingslighter,butnottoowashedout.Lookatyourlayerspalettetoseehowtheselectionyoucreatedactuallycreatedamaskonyourimage.Lookatthechannelstoseethatthelevelsmaskissavedandcanbereused.Awaytocorrectthecolorcastwouldbetoaddanotheradjustmentlayer.ThistimeuseaHue/Saturationlayer.EdittheMasterandusethesaturationslider.
