owadays, you can find QR (quick-response)

Ncodes on everything. These odd-looking, black-and-white, pixellated designs were

originally used by the automotive industry, but today they are most often found in magazines, newspapers and ads.

Admags.es use these codes all the time as they offer an efficient way to create links to websites - you just scan on your phone and the mini mobile site appears. From here you can tap to call, tap to email, get directed to the business - plus much more. Here are some tips on how to use a QR app to access the businesses on direct.admags.es

First, you need a QR-code app and a smartphone or tablet equipped with a camera. iPhone users should check out "RedLaser". Android fans can try either "RedLaser" or "QR Droid", and BlackBerry users will like “QR Code Scanner Pro2. All of these apps are free to download, and each one should handle any standard QR code just fine.

When you launch your app of choice, you'll see that your phone's camera is activated, with an on-screen framing guide. Line up the camera on your device with the QR code you want to scan, and hold the device steady until the app can read the code in front of it.

For the best results, aim your device squarely at the code, and not at an angle. Try to minimize any glare from stray light sources, and scan the code in an evenly lit environment. If the code is in direct sunlight, you may need to cover it with your hand for the app to read it properly.

When the app has recognised the QR code, it will beep and display the info code contains, or launch your web browser to take you through to the designated URL.

Cracking the QR code...

uch of Spain and the

MCosta Blanca has a g r e a t y e a r- r o u n d

climate; but for owners renting out air-conditioned property, the downside can be very expensive. After all, the renters are usually on holiday and the last thing on their minds is the electricity bill.

What tends to happen is one or more of the following:

The renters dont understand how air-conditioning works. They put it on the lowest setting not realising that the room temperature will never actually

get to 16C (they may even leave a window open, causing the system to struggle even more);

They simply forget to turn the aircon off when they go out for the day, creat ing a cool environment that no one is there to enjoy;

All of these scenarios lead to t h e s y s t e m b e i n g r u n unnecessarily, reducing its lifespan and over a rental season, leaving the property owner with 1000s of euros of extra expense in electricity bills and effectively wiping out much of your rental income.

Ecosensespa in prov ides complete contro l for the property owner. Our system is tamper proof and mains powered so no need to worry about batteries going at.

The system turns off the Air-conditioning when no one is detected in the room after a set time period. The system also allows you to set a minimum temperature you will allow your guests to run the AC at (Recommended 21 degrees).

area info

Campoamor is a popular area for the Spanish to live but also attracts many expats & holiday makers.

The beautiful blue ag beach Playa Dehesa is just 5 minutes walk away and is still a relatively undiscovered stretch of sand. With its many amenities: showers, volleyball, climbing frame, football, bars and restaurants, families can enjoy a full day out on this lovely, safe and clean beach, which also has a first aid post with lifeguard.

For water sports the marina at the southern end of the Playa Dehesa is perfect.

The local golf club, Real Club de Campoamor is an 18-hole championship golf course. Situated in two valleys and surrounded by small hills that protect it from the wind, the course enjoys a special micro-climate that makes it possible to practice golf at any time of year.

Cabo RoigIf you want a good night out then head to the Cabo Roig Strip with its extensive bars and restaurants. You can go on a culinary journey around the world, then enjoy an ice cold beer or a cocktail. The fun doesn’t stop so be prepared to enjoy yourself late into the evening or early morning.

Heat your Spanish Home!

NIGHT STORAGE HEATERS are

commonly used in homes all across

the Costas as the most efficient and

cost effective form of heating available on the

market. Used together with Day and Night

Energy, pound for pound, they are by far the

cheapest heater to run.

It's not sunshine and beach parties all year

round in Spain. Temperatures inside homes

drop dramatically during the winter due to lack

of insulation. Moreover, 60% of Spanish homes

built since 1979 have no minimum energy

efficiency standards. This leaves winter

residents with a dilemma on how best to heat

their homes during the cold spell.

According to Which? – The UK's ♯1 product

testing consumer association – “The most

cost-effective form of electric central heating

uses night storage heaters. These heaters use

electricity supplied at a cheaper 'night-time' rate

to heat up special heat-retaining bricks. These

bricks then heat your home around the clock

using the heat stored in the bricks.”

Low running cost is the big bonus with night

storage heaters. Used with the Day and Night

Energy 14-hour cheap rate time-of-day tariff

they run at half the cost of other electric heaters.

There is also the added advantage of gaining

extra savings using your electrical appliances

with Day & Night Energy. For example, using

the washing machine, one of the largest energy

guzzlers in the home, during the cheap rate

period will cut the running cost by half.

Available power is not a major concern either.

That's because night storage heaters only

consume power during the night time when

there is little else switched on.

Night storage heaters are easy to install with no

major building work required. There are no

exposed cables, plus the switching controls

can be fitted out of sight inside the consumer

unit.

When it came to choosing a heating system for

my casa, it was a no brainer. Plus keeping the

boss happy goes a long way in my book. Mrs

Sparks says "these storage heaters ain't like

those big ones your granny had, they look very

modern."

Playa Flamenca &Punta PrimaPlaya Flamenca

Every Saturday Playa Flamenca has a big street market. Opening at 10am and finishing between 13.30 and 14.00, it’s on Calle Nicolas de Bussi. It’s a great place to find stalls selling clothes, shoes, leather goods, bags, food, bedding etc. Along the street you will find snack vans and pubs.

Don't miss the three Kings parade starting at the town hall Playa Flamenca and heading to La Zenia Boulevard on the 5th January.

Punta Prima

On Thursdays and Sundays there is the car boot sale in the underground car park by the petrol garage. It starts at 09.00 – 13.00 and is fully air conditioned. It is also the most northerly point within the Orihuela Costa. So it is either the first or last stop on the coastal walking route depending on which way you are heading!! It has two fine sandy beaches, rocky coves, cliffs and great views. There is always something happening and there are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to enjoy along the front.

The importance of PETicures...

Info...

ou and your beloved pet may share a lot

Yin common: enjoying long walks in the park, snuggling up on the couch, or even

taking a relaxing dip in the pool. But when it comes to an afternoon of pampering at the nail salon, our pets don’t typically share our idea of relaxation. Nevertheless, even if they find it unpleasant and stressful, clipping your pets’ nails is a crucial grooming technique for their overall health and well-being.

Leaving your pet’s nails untrimmed can lead to pain and discomfort from many different sources. Nails that are too long can get hung on fabric, blankets, towels, etc and get torn off which is not only painful, but tends to cause a great deal of bleeding. Nails that are too long (especially the dewclaws) can also grow around and into the footpads causing pain and infection.

Popular to contrary belief, dogs aren’t the only pets that require a routine clipping. Our feline friends need some nail pampering on a regular basis as well. Outdoor cats who climb trees keep their own nails short, but with the majority of our cats living indoors, they too need nail trims. They will naturally sharpen their claws if given adequate substrate to do this on (i.e. a scratching post or wood), but may need additional trimming, especially on the back claws.Keep in mind that it is natural for cats to also use scratching posts to mark their scent, and even cats that are declawed will “use” a scratching post for this purpose.

Trimming your pet’s nails can be done as often as necessary. For dogs, trimming their nails whenever you bathe them can be convenient for both of you. Since we do not typically bathe our cats, a thorough trim every 2 to 4 weeks is plenty.

As for the clipper itself, there are several

brands, types and sizes to choose from, including scissors, pliers, guillotine, and nail grinders. It is best to research which will work best for your pet, as well as test them out to see which style your cat or dog seems most comfortable with.

Letting your pet become used to nail clipping at an early age can also help the process go more smoothly. Once they become comfortable with you holding their paws as kittens or puppies, gradually start clipping one or two nails a day, and follow up with lots of positive rewards for their cooperation. Giving them their favourite treats or even a long tummy scratch should do the trick.

When trimming the nail, be sure to avoid the quick, or nerves and blood vessels located near the bottom of the nail. Just trimming the excess length will ensure a painless clipping process for all involved. But even with the most p a i n l e s s t e c h n i q u e a n d g r a d u a l o f introductions, there are pets that seem unable to get over their terror of nail clipping. If your cat or dog falls under this category, it may be helpful to seek help from an assistant to hold down and calm them while you do the deed. If that backfires and your pet is still too stressed, then talk to your veterinarian about strategies to help make nail trims less stressful. Just like people, each pet is unique, with various personalities and patience levels. It is important to remember that even though they may not find their PETicure enjoyable at the time, they will undoubtedly thank you in the long run.

abandoned animal to be taken to. One animal collection company has contracts with 40 different Costa Blanca Town Halls to collect strays and has a quick kill policy to make space for others brought in daily, they regularly kill hundreds of dogs and cats.

Pets In Spain is a not for profit volunteer run organisation that helps abandoned and homeless animals in Spain.

Based on the Costa Blanca the Pets In Spainteam rescue abandoned and lost animals found wandering and then place them in a foster home until adopted and in a permanent new home. We also respond to calls from concerned people when family pets, through no fault of their own, are in need of a safe haven due to a personal or family crisis that results in them no longer being in a position to care for their pet.

All animals under our care are monitored closely by our dedicated team of volunteers, rehabilitated, all their veterinary needs are catered for and they are promoted for adoption. Please remember that a second hand animal makes a first class pet! Funding plays a vital role in our work with the animals.

Dental bleaching, also commonly known as tooth whitening is a cosmetic procedure performed in dental clinics

and also, more recently at home and in salons. It is advisable to have an examination by a dentist prior to undergoing any whitening treatment as bleaching is not recommended if teeth are decayed or gums are infected. The procedure is most effective for yellow discoloured teeth. It does not change the colour of previous procedures such as crowns, fillings and bridges although it may be beneficial for stain removal on such dental restorations. The effects of treatment can vary from two to seven shades in difference.

Why is bleaching & whitening performed?

Adult teeth become darker with age due to a number of factors such as changes in the mineral structure of the teeth and staining caused by foodstuffs, drinks and tobacco and certain antibiotics. The effects of bleaching can last for several months or years depending on the lifestyle factors of the patient. Continued smoking and ingestion of dark coloured liquids such as tea, coffee, and red wine can all decrease the effectiveness of the bleaching.

What is the difference?

The difference between whitening and bleaching is that whitening restores the natural tooth colour and bleaching whitens beyond the natural colour.

How is the treatment performed?

The treatment can be performed using a number of different methods such as brushing with special toothpaste, placing strips on the teeth, pens, gels and light activated treatment (power bleaching).Whitening toothpaste typically contains course non bleaching agents to grind off stains

which have absorbed onto the teeth. Unlike bleaching, whitening toothpaste does not alter the intrinsic colour of the teeth. Bleaching solutions contain peroxide which physically changes the colour of the tooth enamel.Generally, at-home whiteners use overnight trays containing peroxide gel and may take as long as 14 days for effects to be visible.A better resulting and less time consuming method is in-clinic light accelerated treatment which also uses peroxide and is generally completed within 45 minutes in one single visit.

Gel Bleaching

There are two methods of gel bleaching. One is performed with high concentration gel in dental clinics and salons or at home and the other is performed at home with low concentration agents (being far less effective). For high concentration treatment, firstly a protective layer is applied to the gums to prevent irritation/burning then carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide gel is administered to the teeth with thin plastic trays which remain on the teeth for approximately 20 minutes. The procedure is usually repeated several times until the desired effect is attained. The low concentration whitening performed at home involves purchasing a thin mouth guard or str ip which holds a re lat ively low concentration of bleaching agent. The mouth guard or strip needs to be placed on the teeth for several hours a day or overnight for a p e r i o d o f approximately 14 d a y s . I t m a y b e necessary to have a custom fitted tray made by a dentist or laboratory that will greatly improve the results achieved.

What is tooth Bleaching?

Page 27: AdMags Orihuela Costa Ed. 01

Power Light-accelerated Bleaching

Power or l ight-accelerated bleaching, sometimes colloquially referred to as laser bleaching (a common misconception since lasers are an older technology used before current technologies were developed), uses light energy to accelerate the process of bleaching in a dental clinic. Different types of energy can be used in this procedure, with the most common being halogen, LED, or plasma arc. Clinical trials have demonstrated that among these three options, halogen light is the best source for producing optimal treatment results. The ideal source of energy should be high energy to excite the peroxide molecules without overheating the pulp of the tooth. Lights are typically within the blue light spectrum as this has been found to contain the most effective wavelengths for initiating the hydrogen peroxide reaction. A power bleaching treatment typically involves isolation of soft tissue with a resin-based, light-curable barrier, application of a professional dental-grade hydrogen peroxide whitening gel and exposure to the light source for 6–15 minutes. Recent technical advances have minimized heat and ultraviolet emissions, al lowing a less t ime-intensive pat ient preparation procedure.

Most power teeth whitening treatments can be completed in approximately 30 minutes to one hour, in a single visit with a dental physician. The length of time to retain the effect of the treatment

d e p e n d s o n e a c h individual's teeth and lifestyle. If a person is looking for a smile that will remain bright and to retain the colour forever, they should

consult their dentist about the possibility of treatment with ceramic

or composite veneers. However, the shape, colour and strength of veneers depend solely on the skill of the dentist and his laboratory.

Other possibilities

If a person has experienced internal dentin staining after a root canal treatment, antibiotics or an accident which can not be remedied by bleaching of the tooth surface, another method of internal bleaching can be used. This involves drilling a small hole to access the interior chamber of the tooth which is then thoroughly cleaned and a peroxide gel is applied to work directly inside the tooth on the dentin layer. The tooth containing the gel is then sealed and the gel is left for a number of days (or replaced if necessary) to achieve the desired effect.

What are the risks?

The procedure is not recommended in children under the age of 16 or for pregnant or lactating women.Individuals suffering sensitive teeth and gums, defective restorations or sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide should first consult a dentist. The most common side effects of the procedure are tooth sensitivity/pain and gum irritation. These conditions are temporary and usually disappear within 1 to 3 days of stopping or completing the treatment. There may also be a risk of hot and cold sensitivity to the teeth which also disappears with time.Furthermore, prolonged exposure to bleaching agents may damage the tooth enamel, especially from over the counter home kits that contain fruit acids.

This is largely due to Spain's favourable climate and lifestyle combined with the inexpensive air fares from many airports, making travelling there easy and affordable. Constitution Day – 6th December

Constitution day honours the anniversary of the threferendum on the 6 December 1978. The

constitution declared Spain to be a social and

democratic state governed by law. The new stconstitution went into effect on 1 January 1979

and made Spain a parliamentary Monarchy with

no official religion.

Immaculate Conception - 8th December

Inmaculada Concepcion

Immaculate Conception is a holy day which is of

extreme importance to people of Catholic faith.

The day celebrates Mary’s “immaculate

conception”. Many will attend special church

services to celebrate this occasion. Due to The th06 of December being a public holiday some

thservices may not be available on the 7 of

December. Although this day is not a public

holiday many people take the day off!

Christmas Day – 25th December

Dia de Navidad

Christmas day in Spain is not as important as it is

to other countries. The Spanish will have their

Christmas meal on Christmas Eve and the

children have to wait for their main presents until

Three Kings Day.

New Years Eve - 31st December

Noche Vieja

Spanish normally don’t start partying until around

12.30am spending the early evening with family

but continue celebrating until early in the morning.

A tradition is to eat 12 grapes at midnight, one

along with each of the twelve bongs! This tradition

started around 100 years ago and was a way for

the farmers to get rid of grapes they had left over. If

you don’t feel like eating a load of pips as well,

most supermarkets stock seedless grapes in tins.

Three Kings – 6th January

Dia de los Reyes

This day is an important one, especially for the

children, as this is the day they will receive their thpresents. The fun starts on the 5 January when

the three kings parade through the streets and will

through sweets to the excited children.

A popular food to eat is a Roscon which is donut

shaped bread with cherries and sugar and

contains a plastic toy inside. Whoever finds the

toy gets good luck for the next year.

A f e w e s s e n t i a l s . . .Driving licenceVisitors riding or driving in Spain must have reached the minimum ages laid down for residents of Spain even if they are qualified to drive at a lower age in their country of residence. A foreign driving licence does not entitle the holder to drive a motor vehicle in Italy until the age of 18yrs old. Driving licences issued in EU and EEA countries are accepted.International driving permits are recognised but not required.

Important documentsVehicles from the UK may be imported into Spain for up to 6 months in any period of 12 months. When driving in Spain the following documents should be carried:

Full, valid driving licence* (with paper counterpart)

Proof of insurance (third party or above) Proof of ID (Passport) Proof of ownership (V5C Certificate)

*International Driving Permits are recognised but not compulsory

While driving in Spain you are required by law to carry the following items. Hefty on-the-spot fines can be issued for failing to carry specific items:

Reective jackets (Although not mandatory to carry, someone walking on the road or hard shoulder can be fined if not wearing one)

Warning triangle (compulsory in every vehicle with 4 wheels or more) (Residents must carry 2)

Headlamp beam deectors (Depending on your car, you will either need deector stickers or have to adjust the beam manually)

MotorcyclistsCrash helmets are compulsory for riders of mopeds, motorcycles, trikes and quads, unless these are equipped with seat belts. Motorcycles on the road must have their lights on at all times.

*Lights (It is no longer compulsory for vehicles to carry a set of spare bulbs and the tools to fit them)

Rules of the road· Overtaking & passingVehicles and combinations of vehicles exceeding 10m in length and vehicles exceeding 3.5 t must keep a distance of at least 50m with the vehicle in front, except in built-up areas, on roads where overtaking is prohibited and when there are several lanes in the same direction or when the traffic is so heavy that it is not possible to overtake another vehicle.

PriorityAs a general rule, drivers approaching an intersection must give way to all vehicles coming from the right.

Starting a business?A few points to keep in mind.. .

Work & Business

find Services & Solutions on direct.admags.es

here are a lot of reasons one would start

Ttheir own business: entrepreneurship, a great idea, a way to improve a pre-

existing product or service, to take advantage of a certain activity or discovering a gap in the market - benefitting the people around you as well as yourself. On the other hand, many new business projects begin due to the low amount of job opportunities, making starting up a business basically mandatory for some.

At we've seen many a Services & Solutionbusiness triumph, in some cases even local companies have transformed their image into a global phenomenon, giving great economic results & opening up more job opportunities. Although, of course, we've also seen many projects fail - usually due to bad planning & unstable administrative plans. Before starting anything, it's necessary to set out a Business Strategy, where we'll plan out, for example, the following items:

1) What are we doing and how will we do it. We have to really go over whether we're in a good condition to make the business work for us, all by ourselves. We also need to have the opportunity to make a profit; earning money is what it's all about. To do so, we must know what's actually possible & who are our potential customers.

2) Economic review of the future company. Sure, we've thought of initial economic investment, but we've also got to plan any additional costs, with at least 2 years projection. Knowing how to break-even, how

much you must earn for it to be worthwhile & how long you can be losing money in order to turn a profit in the future are all beneficial. Backing out of business in time can be an economic-win; you have to know when to call it a day before getting in debt with public administrators or providers.

3) What sort of permit or license will we need for our activity? The business advisers are the bridge between public administration and our clients, but it's entirely the owners responsibility to know the specific legal requirements for his or her business, always counting on the Advisers for help where needed.

4) Sometimes in life we've got to ask ourselves some important questions: "Am I good at what I do?", "Do I have true passion for my job?" Starting up a business means an important investment of our time & strength, so our answers to these sorts of questions have to be clear and honest.

The above are just a few basic points you should consider when starting your own business in Spain and in these tough economic time.

In future articles we'll continue to analyze the importance of taking a firm first step in the business world.
