    Create a New Folder

    To create a new folder right-click on any blank space on your desktop on the menu that

    pops up go to New > Folder;

    Rename or Delete a Folder

    Right click the folder and choose rename option to change the name of the folder or click

    delete to delete the folder. Warning will be given before deleting the folder.

    Search Companion

    Search Companion makes it easy for you to search for files and folders, printers, people, the

    Internet, and other computers on your network. The search companion can also search byname, type, size, and a specific location. To access search companion click start > Click

    Address Book Provides a convenient place to store contact information for easy

    Prompt

    Previously known as MS-DOS (an acronym for Microsoft Disk Operating

    System). This command prompt window is a command-line interfacewith MS-DOS based features.

    Paint A drawing tool that you can use to create black-and-white or colourdrawings.

    are connected to your computer.

    The Accessibilities sub-menu is designed for users with vision, hearing, or mobility

    impairments.

    Accessibility Wizard Helps you configure Windows for your vision, hearing, and

    mobility needs.

    Magnifier A display utility that makes the screen more readable for users

    who have impaired vision. A separate window at the top of yourscreen will magnify the section that your mouse is over.

    Narrator A text-to-speech program that helps people with impaired vision.The narrator reads what is displayed on your screen: the contents

    of the active window, menu options, or the text you have typed.

    (This option is only available in English.)

    On-Screenkeyboard

    Displays a virtual keyboard on the screen allowing a minimumlevel of functionality for mobility-impaired users.

    Utility Manager A program used to manage your accessibility programs.

    Communications Sub-Menu

    It provides all the essential tools required to do communication. These tools allow you tocreate many types of connections like VPN, High-Speed Internet, modem, infrared, and

    many others.

    Hyper Terminal Telnet is a terminal emulation program for the Internet

    and networks. It is an older command-line basedprogram used to remotely connect to and control other

    computers.

    Network Connections Displays shortcuts to shared computers, printers, and

    other resources on the network. The shortcuts arecreated automatically in My Network Places whenever

    you open a shared network resource, such as a printer orshared folder. (Also available through the Control Panel.)

    Network Set up Wizard Guides you through setting up your home or small officenetwork. (Also available in the Control Panel.)

    New Connection Wizard Used for creating a new network or Internet connection.(Also available in the Control Panel.) Network

    connections provide connectivity between your computerand the Internet, a private network, or another

    computer.

    Remote Desktop Connection Allows more than one user to have active sessions on a

    single computer allowing you to remotely connect toanother computer and take control of a desired user

    account.

    Wireless Network Set upWizard

    Guides you through setting up your home or officewireless network. (A wireless network can be connected

    to the Internet or an internal network.)

    System Tools Sub-Menu

    The System Tools sub-menu contains a range of tools to optimize and maintain yourcomputer.

    Backup Also called NTBackup, this wizard will help you create a copy ofthe information on your hard disk. This allows you to restore

    your data in the event of a system failure.

    Character Map Provides additional characters for different types of fonts. Some

    examples would be trademark symbols, special mathematicalcharacters, or character sets from another language.

    Disk Cleanup Used to free up space on your hard disk by removing temporaryInternet files, removing installed components, emptying the

    recycle bin, and other options. (Additional options may be listedfor removal depending on what programs you have installed.)

    You may also remove unwanted Windows components, installedprograms, and systems restore points.

    Disk Defragmenter Used to consolidate fragmented files and folders on yourcomputers hard disk, so that each occupies a single, contiguous

    space on the volume of the hard disk. It will also consolidate thefree space on your hard disk. This decreases the time it takes to

    find and access files and folders.

    Files and Settings

    Transfer Wizard

    Also referred to as the USMT (user state migration tool). Used to

    transfer settings from one computer to another computer. Thesettings that you can transfer include your personalized settings

    for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, desktop settings, anddisplay settings.

    Scheduled Tasks Allows you to schedule any script, program, or document to run

    at a time that is most convenient for you. They can be

    scheduled to run daily, weekly, monthly, or at certain times(such as start-up).

    Security Centre Included with Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. The WindowsSecurity Centre checks the status of your computer for three

    essential security components: firewalls, virus protectionsoftware, and automatic updates. Additional features are also

    included in the security centre, which will be covered in a later

    lesson.

    System Information Displays your system configuration information. This can beused by a support technician to troubleshoot your computer to

    resolve an issue.

    System Restore Allows you to restore your computer to a previous state. This

    can be used if a problem occurs without losing your personaldata files.

    Lesson 5.5: Administrative ToolsIt is only available in Windows XP Professional version, it allows to configure componentservices, to do computer management, doing database connectivity by using ODBC, even

    you check event viewer to check the system logs etc.

    Component Services Opens the Component Services window with the available

    snap-ins Component Services, Event Viewer, and Services.Component services allow administrators to deploy and

    administer Component Services applications through a GUI orscripting language.

    Computer Management Opens the Computer Management window which helps you

    manage local or remote computers using utilities and tools.

    This includes many topics such as System Tools, Storage, andServices, and applications like Disk Management and Local

    Users and Groups.

    Data Sources (ODBC) OBDC stands for Open Database Connectivity. This feature in

    Windows XP allows you to access data from a variety ofdatabase management systems, such as SQL databases.

    Event Viewer Opens the Event Viewer window which maintains logs aboutprogram, security, and system events on your computer. This

    information can be used to gather information andtroubleshoot a hardware or software problem.

    Local Security Policy Opens the Local Security Policy window which helps youcustomize the security on your computer. This includes such

    features as account policies and resource policies.

    Performance Opens the Performance window. This window can be used to

    collect performance data from local or remote computers. Youmay add or remove components to the display graph as well

    as customize the Performance window.

    Services Opens the Services window which displays all the services

    installed on your computer. Through this window you can

    customize and troubleshoot your installed services.

    Security Center

    Security center monitors the essential security programs like- firewall, virus protection,automatic updates. It will alert you if any one of the programs is not functioning properly or

    not installed. Click Start > Control Panel > Double click Security Center;

    Defragmentation

    Defragmenting your computer will speed up your computer. Disk Defragmenter is a utilitywithin Windows XP which will align the files on your hard drive, in a contiguous series, which

    increases read/write access.

    Hard disks contains several platters, each platter allows data storage on both sides. Now asa user you create files or install programs time to time and you also remove or delete them

    time to time. Now removing a program leaves a gap in platters and sectors of hard drive.Defragmentation rearranges the data in a sequence so empty space are filled and its easy

    to access the data which is arranged properly.

    Device Manager

    Most of the hardware devices installed and connected to your computer are listed in devicemanager. Through this window you can manage and view your hardware. Device Manager is

    a utility used to updated your hardware device drivers, modify hardware settings, and

    troubleshoot hardware related issues.To access device manager click start control panel>double click system icon >click hardwaretab then, click device manager button.

    Right click My Computer icon >Click Properties > click hardware tab then, click device

    manager button.

    OR

    Press Windows key + Pause key simultaneously then click hardware tab> click device

    manager button.

    Devices in device manager are listed in a hierarchical category view. By clicking the plus

    sign of a category you will see the devices installed within your computer. Right clicking ona device allows you to manage the device with following options:

    Update driver

    Disable Uninstall

    Scan for hardware changes

    Properties

    Task Manager

    The Task Manager provides you dynamic information about your computers performance italso displays details about programs and processes running on your computer. It also

    displays network information. Task Manager is also capable of ending and startingprograms, when especially when any program causes a freezing state. It also displays

    number of process running in your computer along with CPU usage percentage. You canalso view the memory usage.

    To open task manager, right Click on the taskbar and select Task Manager, or use the

    keyboard shortcut Ctrl+ Alt+ Del or Ctrl + Shift + Esc;
