ABOUT US

The Association of Brass Band Adjudicators (AoBBA) was inaugurated on 24th

January 1999 at Dean Clough in Halifax with 22 members present. The first members

of the Executive Committee were John Berryman, Roy Newsome, Peter Parkes,

David Read (Chair), James Scott and Geoffrey Whitham.

Since that first meeting the Association has grown in strength to over 80 members

and is proud that AoBBA member adjudicators are predominant in all major brass

band competitions throughout the UK and are also represented in Europe and

Scandinavia. The Association of Brass Band Adjudicators currently has amongst its

ranks some of the finest brass musicians in the UK and its primary aim is to develop

professional standards and further the status of the art of brass band adjudication.

The role of an adjudicator is extremely important, and it is our duty to ensure that we

maintain the highest levels of professionalism, integrity and competence. We are well

aware of the time, effort and money that goes into producing any type of contest

performance and in order to perform at these events many people will have made

considerable personal and financial sacrifices to attend and play to the best of their

ability. Players will have spent time in rehearsals, sectionals as well as personal

practice and basically put their life on hold to perform at a contest. As well as

personal financial costs and time their respective bands would have also made a large

financial spend with some bands working all the year round to compete.

Due to the important role of the adjudicator, it is the Associations responsibility to

ensure that we maintain the highest of standards so that all stake holders feel they

have been assessed by someone who is experienced, prepared, organised, and

qualified to make such important decisions.

Our membership includes some of the most experienced and qualified people in the

brass band movement and we are proud of our record of continuing professional

development in order to maintain our high standards.
