Tectonics +Stereotomics

Included here in the next few pages are examples of work that explore tectonic and stereotomic space making strategies. On the left are small study models that explore the creation of three spaces within a spatial confine. The next two pages showcase what happens when two stereotomic cubes are merged together to create a totem, where the space in between is constructed as a negotiation of two completely different spaces. Finally, I have included my cube city model and drawings that are a culmination of the techniques and design strategies learnt in the first unit.

Figure-Ground-Figure The study of the figure ground involved creating four compositions using shapes extracted from an abstract painting. On the right we can see a centroidal void and a centroidal object that was created using these abstract shapes. Experimenting with lineweights to indicate clear differences in darkness was an important part of the exercise.

On the following page is a large model that merges the work of four people, enabling us to play with object-space relationships using positive and negative space. Although there are clearly four distinct set of forms arranged vertically, there is also a centroidal object that stands out, and a series of interesting relationships between objects in different rows.

Precedent Translation I worked on creating edited and hybrid axonometric drawings that focus on the precedents highlighted in the Vanna Venturi House, by Robert Venturi. While the axonometric on the left is purely digital and is an analysis of the precedent, the drawing on the right is a hybrid of digital and hand drawn techniques that focus on highlighting the precedent in my design of the final pavillion.

On the following two pages are iterative projective diagrams that led to the production of the final Primordial Pavillion design. Working iteratively was an important part of the design process and enabled me to refine my ideas.
