The EDHF Resolution of Professional Profile and Competences of Dental Hygienists in Europe is adopted by
the EDHF General Assembly on 12 September 2015
(Dublin)
The profile is an initial step in the process of
developing a common education framework
for dental hygienists in Europe, recognized in EU-directives on Professional
Qualifications. The document can also be used in all European
countries members of the EDHF, including Italy.

The dental hygienist is a preventive oral health
professional who provides educational,
clinical, research, administrative, and therapeutic services
supporting total health through the promotion of

The dental hygienists integrate the roles of

prevent oral diseases and promote health.

• L’European Dental Hygienist’s Federation (Edhf - www. edhf.eu) nasce ufficialmente nel 1999 grazie alla volontà e al desiderio di un primo gruppo di associazioni nazionali di istituire un organismo sovranazionale grazie al quale potere supportare, far crescere e affermare la figura professionale dell’igienista dentale all’interno dell’allora Comunità economica europea (Cee).
• Dal 1999 a oggi il numero delle associazioni aderenti è cresciuto e oggi conta:
• Italia • Austria • Spagna• Portogallo • Olanda• Svizzera• Germania • Irlanda • Norvegia • Finlandia • Danimarca• Repubblica Ceca• Slovacchia • Malta• L’assemblea generale si tiene almeno una volta all’anno.
Gli obiettivi principali della federazione in accordo con le indicazioni dell’Organizzazione mondiale della sanità e delle istituzioni europee, a
favore dei cittadini della comunità:• 1) Divenire l’organizzazione sovranazionale (“Council of European Dental
Hygienists”) di riferimento per le istituzioni nell’ambito della discussione circa le direttive europee e tutti gli altri argomenti inerenti le professioni sanitarie che si occupano della salute e prevenzione orale.
• 2) Sviluppare occasioni di collaborazione e sinergie operative tra la federazione e altre istituzioni e gruppi di lavoro europei quali il Council of European Chief Dental Officers, l’Oral Health Platform o altri rilevanti attori internazionali al fine di raggiungere obiettivi comuni a molteplici professionalità del settore odontoiatrico e più in generale della salute.
• 3) Agire a livello di ciascuna nazione rappresentata dalla federazione e più in generale a livello europeo affinché vi sia una reale comprensione, apprezzamento e riconoscimento delle competenze professionali dell’igienista dentale; affinché la professione venga inclusa nelle direttive europee pertinenti e al fine di assicurare percorsi formativi comuni e libera circolazione dei professionisti in accordo con il Processo di Bologna.
