Introduction Vietnam. The total area is 331,114 sq. km. Population: 90 million; 55 million are farmers, 67% of labour force. The cultivated area: 11 million ha. 

IntroductionAgriculture is based on rice production: 37 million tons per year (in 77% of the cultivated area). Other crops: Maize, potato, cassava, groundnut, soybean, sugarcane, fruit trees and other perennial commercial trees as coffee, tea, rubber and coconut.Agriculture output value: 25% of GDP, of which food production is 77% and livestock production is about 20%.

IntroductionGoats are raised all over the country by extensive free‐range system with low productivity. Total number of goats is 1.3 million of which 200,000 is dual purpose dairy and meat goat breed. Goat production has begun to receive more attention from the farmers and the Government. Goat production has played an important role in the improvement of the incomes.

Dairy goat breedsLocal indigenous dairy goat breed is Bach Thao,Dual purpose. Main dairy goat breed in Vietnam: found mainly in the Ninh Thuan province (Central part of Vietnam). The Bach Thao goat is introduced in many other provinces. The origin of Bach Thao goat is not clear;Black colour coat with white spots, big and pendulous ears. The body weight is between 75 to 80 kg for the male and 40 to 45 kg for the female. Milk yield is about 1.1 to 1.4 kg/day with the lactation period of 148 to 150 days; 1.7 to 1.8 litres of kid per year. Perform well under improved management conditions.

Exotic goat breedsSaanen and Alpine goats: imported from France by frozen semen and live goats in 1998 and from US in 2002. In 1994, the Jumnapari, Beetal and Barbary imported from India. Good milk yield and adapts very well to the grazing farming condition. To cross with the local breed (Bach Thao) to improve milk yield.

Management, Feeding system and feed resources

Intensive, semi‐intensive and extensive management systems.  In the intensive system, animals are kept in cages and hand‐fed with nutrients. The kids are separated from their mothers10 days after kidding, the does milked twice daily while recording their yields. The kids are allowed to suckle after milking, and milk consumed by the kids was estimated by weighing kids before and after suckling. The kids are weaned at three months of age

semi‐intensive system

In the semi‐intensive system, goats are grazed, and supplied feed at the goat house at night. This system is found suitable for the existing goat production system in Vietnam

In the extensive system, animal are grazed without supplementation. This system is common in the rural areas of Vietnam.

Farming The average farm size in Vietnam about 5 to 20 goats per family. There are large farms in the Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces, where the goat population comes to one hundred heads. Goats are kept in cages supported by pillars at the height of about 50 to 70 cm. In remote areas, children or old people normally take care of the goats on free‐range basis during the day and herded home in the evening.

FeedingBeside the natural grasses, cultivated forage are also being introduced to farmers such as Flemingia macrophylla, Trichanthera gigantea, Leucaena leucocephala, Panicum maximum, Brachiaria  ruziziensis, Elephant grass, Mulato grass,…

- Cultivated Forage: 200.000 ha,‐ Production 12-15 million tonnes of fresh forage/year.- 19 graminous/ leguminous varieties were planted.

FeedingAvailable local feed resources also being investigated for use as goat feed to include the Mulberry (Morus alba), Bananas (main sterm), cassava hay (cassava sterm and leaves) and cassava roots.

FeedingThree‐quarter of Vietnam is mountainous and hilly covered by trees, which is a huge source of agro by‐products can be used as goat feed. Goat is also integrated in the animal farming system so that feed that is not use by the other animals are consumed by them.

Diseases situationSome major diseases: Internal parasites, ecthymatosis, diarrhoea and pneumonia. The important infectious diseases like Pasteurellosis, Enterotoxaemia are effectively controlled by vaccination.The other infectious diseases like ecthymatosis, keratoconjunctivitis are treated effectively with local medicines. 

Product processing and marketThe products (meat and milk) are higher prices and compete with products from pig, chicken, and beef for the market. However, the environment is now favourable for the promotion goat products. 1998‐2000, project (FAO/TCP‐VIE 6613) developed new methods for collecting goat’s milk from small farmers to small processing units for the pasteurisation and processing to make cheese and yogurt. Providing farmers with opportunities to increase their incomes and further improve their dairy goat production system.

MarketThere is potential market for the goat’s milk in Vietnam. The price of goat’s milk is 30,000VND per litter while it is only 20,000VND for the cow’s milk. There is now a big demand from consumer for goat’s milk, especially in the city.

OpportunityIn the Livestock Development Strategy till year 2020:‐ To develop the livestock production into commodity production, reorganize the livestock production and facilitate linkage between production and market, ensure safety from disease, veterinary hygiene, environment protection and improvement of social welfare condition, increase productivity, quality, efficiency, food safety and hygiene and encourage organizations and individuals to invest in the development of livestock industry. 

OpportunityRecently, one national project on improvement of meat and milk in goat and sheep production in Vietnam has been approved. Together with international programmes, Vietnam is now provided with the opportunity to expand our dairy goat system.Some international cooperation projects: Delphe of BC or CLGA for staff training 

ChallengesThe indigenous dairy goat breed are dual purpose, but it is mainly used for meat because milk yield is low. The farmer lacks the knowledge on milking and dairy goat farming system. Free range for grazing goat in Vietnam is limited. Milk collection and processing system is yet to be established, Market for milk and milk products is mainly in the big cities.

Future activitiesIn the livestock production strategy, we try to increase the total number of dairy goats to reach 300,000 heads.Studies will be conducted on improvement breeds by importing high‐performance dairy goat breeds from Europe and other countries in the region to cross with the local indigenous breed. (Saanen from Canada and Shami from Malaysia)Contact with foreinge goat companies to buy good goat breeds (Saanen in Canada or Shami in Malaysia)

Future activitiesThis should improve the quality and quantity of goat’s milk. Studies will be conduct on the feeding and management system, product processing and marketing. We will establish pilot farms as show farms for farmers to learn in provinces where the dairy goat projects will be implemented.
