للثقافة والفنون 20 In 1996, the same year that Abu Dhabi was officially named the nation’s capital, the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) was born.

For two decades, ADMAF has been at the forefront of the UAE’s cultural sector. Through its platforms and programmes, it has enabled artistic expression to blossom while embedding culture at the heart of the nation.

Today, ADMAF touches the lives of 40,000 people across the UAE each year. From theatres and galleries to schools, nurseries, hospitals and special needs centres, it has pioneered new ways in which the arts can benefit society.

Culture gives people their identity and enables countries to engage in exchange and dialogue. In doing so, they flourish, becoming global beacons of innovation and creativity. Today, as ADMAF harnesses the power of culture, we commend pioneers around the world. In 2016, dancer and conservationist Sylvie Guillem, composer Gabriel Yared, Ghassan Salamé (Lebanese Minister of Culture, 2000-03) and author Amin Maalouf were recognised through the Abu Dhabi Festival Awards in association with Chopard.

Delving into ADMAF’s archive, names of national and international significance pour forth. We have welcomed to our shores the stars of stage and screen, many for the first time; from Herbie Hancock, Kevin Spacey, Plácido Domingo and Wynton Marsalis to Carnegie Hall, The Bolshoi and The Mariinsky. We have celebrated the magic of the Arab world through the work of Zaha Hadid, Naseer Shamma, Marcel Khalife, Walid Gholmieh and Rachid Koraïchi. And we have seen the UAE’s very own musicians, artists and filmmakers rise to prominence; from Faisal Al Saari, Sara Al Qaiwani and Hamdan Al Abri to Nujoom Al Ghanem, Mattar Bin Lahej, Jalal Luqman and Azza Al Qubaisi, to name but a few.

And what of the next 20 years? We hope you will join us for the next exciting chapter of artistic adventures, beginning with the Abu Dhabi Festival 2016.

تأسست مجموعة أبوظبي للثقافة والفنون في عام 1996، وهو نفس العام الذي أصبحت فيه أبوظبي عاصمة رسمية للبالد بموجب الدستور النهائي لدولة اإلمارات العربية المتحدة. وعلى مدى السنوات العشرين

الماضية، حّلت المجموعة في صدارة المشهد الثقافي للدولة؛ وساهمت عبر منّصاتها وبرامجها المختلفة بدعم مختلف أشكال التعبير الفني

وترسيخ الثقافة والفن في صلب الحياة بالدولة.

وتسعى مجموعة أبوظبي للثقافة والفنون اليوم إلى تسخير قوة الثقافة والفن لخدمة اإلنسانية، فإننا ننوه بالدور المحوري الذي يلعبه رواد الثقافة

حول العالم في هذا اإلطار. وانسجامًا مع ذلك، فقد شهد حفل توزيع “جائزة مهرجان أبوظبي 2016” - وبالتعاون مع “شوبارد” - تكريم راقصة

الباليه والناشطة البيئية سيلفي غييم، والموسيقار غابرييل يارد، ووزير الثقافة اللبناني األسبق غسان سالمة، واألديب أمين معلوف.

واستقطبت المجموعة خالل مسيرتها نخبة من األسماء والفنانين المرموقين على المستويين المحلي والدولي، وال سيما نجـوم المسرح

والشاشة الذين حضر الكثيرون منهم ألول مـرة إلى الدولة بما فيهم هيربي هانكوك، وكيفن سبيسي، وبالسيدو دومينغو، ووينتون مارساليس، ونجوم قاعة “كارنيغي” ومسرحي “بولشوي” و”مارينسكي”. كما احتفت بإبـداعات

العالم العربي عبر ميادين كثيرة من خالل أعمال زها حديد، ونصير شّمة، ومارسيل خليفة، ووليد غلمية، ورشيد القريشي. من جهة ثانية، شهدت

المجموعة بزوغ نخبة من الفنانين والموسيقيين وصّناع األفالم اإلماراتيين مثل فيصل الساري، وسارة القيواني، وحمدان الَعبري، ونجوم الغانم، ومطر

بن الحج، وجالل لقمان، وعزة القبيسي وغيرهم الكثير.

Set in 1916, the Oscar-nominated film follows the exploits of a Bedouin boy who joins his older brother escorting a British officer across the desert in a remote part of the Ottoman Empire. Discovered at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival by Quincy Jones, Rodríguez has distinguished himself as the definition of jazz and improvisation without boundaries. “Alfredo is very special,” says Quincy Jones. “He is without doubt one of the best young pianists I’ve ever seen and with the enormous skills that he already possesses, his potential is limitless.”

THE ABU DHABI FESTIVAL COMPOSERS’ PLATFORMThe Abu Dhabi Festival Composers’ Platform supports innovative, Arab, music practitioners to create new works and recordings. The resulting material seeks to further Arab music and raise the level of its appreciation. Previous beneficiaries have included Faisal Al Saari (UAE), Naseer Shamma (Iraq), Bechara El Khoury (Lebanon/France), Hiba Al Kawas (Lebanon), Macadi Nahhas (Jordan) and The Foundation for Arab Music Archiving & Research (Lebanon/UAE).

The Abu Dhabi Festival has enabled two outstanding new works to be created in 2016.

February saw the world premiere at Dubai’s Madinat Theatre of a new work by the Emirati composer and oud player Faisal Al Saari and Switzerland’s Luzia Von Wyl. The concert by Faisal and the Luzia Von Wyl Ensemble will tour to Switzerland later this year (check abudhabifestival.ae for details).

In March, Abu Dhabi Festival’s fourth collaboration with its international strategic cultural partner, The Foundation for Arab Music Archiving and Research (AMAR), saw the the worldwide release of ‘Mohammed Al Qasabgi’, a CD box set commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Egyptian musician and composer.

February saw the world premiere at the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles as part of Maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen’s ‘City of Light’ mini-festival. Co-commissioned with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a new installation by Austria’s Ars Electronica Futurelab surrounded Maurice Ravel’s delicate and magical ‘Mother Goose’ performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This was the Abu Dhabi Festival’s first co-commission in the USA.

France’s Olympia Theatre in Paris was the venue of Abu Dhabi Festival’s latest collaboration, in February, with the oud master of Iraq. First seen at the Festival back in 2012, Naseer Shamma and a renowned group of instrumentalists from Italy, Spain, USA, Greece and Colombia embarked on a journey that testified to the unifying power of music.

And finally for 2016, Beirut, London, Marrakech and Brus-sels will experience Babel Theatre’s ‘The Baghdad Bath House’, a new Arabic-language production written and directed by the award-winning Iraqi playwright Jawad Al Assadi, starring Haida Abou Haidar and Aboud Dhaidan Al Hargani. ‘The Baghdad Bath House’ follows a day in the life of two brothers, who begin to confront uncomfortable truths. عالميًا في قاعة والت ديزني بمدينة لوس أنجلوس األمريكية، وذلك ضمن إطار المهرجان المصغر “مدينة األضواء” للمايسترو عيسى بيكا سالونين.

وتضمن العرض - الذي تم تقديمه بتكليف مشترك مع فرقة “لوس أنجلوس الفلهارمونية” - مجموعة من األعمال التركيبية من مهرجان

“أرس الكترونيكا فيوتشر الب” في النمسا، وهو يجسد أول أعمال التكليف لـمهرجان أبوظبي التي يتم عرضها في الواليات المتحدة.

في إطار تعاونه األخير مع مهرجان أبوظبي. شّمة الذي تعود مشاركته األولى )مع مجموعة من الفنانين العالميين( في المهرجان إلى عام 2012، انضّم إلى نخبة من أشهر الفنانين العالميين من إيطاليا وإسبانيا والواليات

المتحدة واليونان وكولومبيا لتقديم حفالت موسيقية تؤكد على دور الموسيقى في توحيد الشعوب.

خالل عام 2016، ستقوم فرقة “مسرح بابل” بجولة عالمية تشمل مدن بيروت ولندن ومراكش وبروكسل لتقديم مسرحية “حّمام بغدادي” بعد

إعادة إنتاجها باللغة العربية، وهي من تأليف وإخراج جواد األسدي الحائز على عدة جوائز مرموقة ومن بطولة الممثلين حيدر أبو حيدر وعبود

الحركاني. وتدور أحداث المسرحية حول شقيقين يبدآن سجااًل وعتابًا فيما بينهما حتى الوصول إلى لحظة التصالح.

In partnership with Al Jalila Cultural Centre for Children, Dar Zayed for Family Care in Al Ain, Dar Al Ber Society in Dubai, and the Social Services Department in Sharjah, the camp brings together children from various orphanages across the UAE for workshops in music, pottery and multimedia, as well as an Arabic theatre performance.

حامد كشميرشكانتقام هذه الندوة تحت عنوان “الفن المعاصر في الشرق األوسط: مشهد

متغير”؛ ويقدمها مؤرخ الفنون الشهير الدكتور حامد كشميرشكان، شريك األبحاث في معهد الشرق األوسط - لندن التابع لكلّية الدراسات الشرقية

واإلفريقية بجامعة لندن. وتناقش الندوة الحالة الراهنة والرؤية المستقبلية للفن المعاصر في منطقة الشرق األوسط والظروف والمناقشات التاريخية

والثقافية التي ساهمت في رسم مالمح تلك الحالة.

This workshop is a rare opportunity for students to understand the creative process of artist Mohammed Al Astad, which crosses the boundaries of science and art. Using a highly innovative technique, which he calls ‘beach pearls’, Al Astad buries iron and iron powder with the canvas beneath wet sand, thus using the chemical process of oxidisation to generate art. Over the course of two weeks, students will create their very own artwork on the Emirates Palace beach.

The annual discussion series returns to offer insightful dialogue and debate on the hottest cultural topics. Since 2010, Riwaq Al Fikr has held 18 sessions, providing over 30 hours of stimulating, intellectual discourse. Featuring a keynote speech from John Newbigin, Chair of Creative England, and moderated by the Contemporary Bedouin Ahmed Al Anzi, this panel discussion with the students of Zayed University will explore the growth of the UAE’s creative and cultural Industries over the last decade and the challenges of the future.

A celebration of the creativity and theatre skills of young children with autism who have taken part in NYUAD’s Drama Project. Under the guidance of Mina Liccione of Dubomedy, NYUAD students have been working with a group of 10 children from the Abu Dhabi Autism Centre and the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care & Special Needs.

Al Gharbia is a beautiful part of the country. Nature is still untouched by development, but change is coming fast. With ADMAF Nationals’ Gallery artist Alia Al Shamsi, this workshop will enable HCT students to discover the techniques needed to take the perfect photo so that they may enter ‘Shots from Al Gharbia’, one of the biggest photography competitions in Abu Dhabi and under the patronage of The Office of The Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region.

Al Gharbia is a traditional part of the country, steeped in culture and history. The love of poetry is strong. As part of Library Week, HCT students join Emirati poet Afra Atiq, for an introduction to modern Emirati poetry; who is writing it and how to write it themselves.

Conceived and moderated by Nujoom Al Ghanem, a select group of emerging filmmakers will learn how to write, pro-duce and direct a low-budget, independent film in the Middle East, from development, pre-production, production and post-production to distribution. All under the expert guidance of the team behind the Oscar-nominated film ‘Theeb’: Naji Abu Nowar (Director) and Rupert Lloyd (Producer).
