Presenting a new and special offering:

Victorian Mourning Traditions

In preparation for the celebration of All Saints Day, we will have a special presentation of how our ancestors in the Victorian age used ritual to

mourn their dead. On Wednesday evening, October 23, at 7:00 pm, in St. Paul School cafeteria, two veteran historical reenactors will bring to

life the past practices of dealing with the passing of loved ones.

In order to describe 19th century mourning traditions, this presentation will first outline the conditions of the time, including disease, lack of sterile practices, diets that lacked essential vitamins and nutrients, and medical treatments barely a step above witchcraft – all of which

made death a very common occurrence. As the Civil War added another cause for mourning, rituals became more clearly defined and adhered to as much as finances and

circumstances allowed. In large part, the stage had been set for these traditions by England’s Queen Victoria, who mourned the death of her husband for decades. Other traditions grew out of necessity – flowers at funerals, for example, to mask the odor of

death and wakes that served as a safeguard against premature burial.

Presenters Judi Hendrickson and Jeanne Finstein will describe these and many other traditions of the time, some of which are still observed. Their talk will be illustrated with

pictures, showing such things as mourning garb and vintage photographs. Judi and Jeanne are amateur historians who have extensive experience in researching and presenting topics

of historical interest. Often dressed in period costumes, they usually illustrate their talks with related pictures. Both are long-time members of Friends of Wheeling, a local historic preservation organization. Judi Hendrickson works at West Virginia Northern Community

College. Jeanne Finstein is an educational software developer with Polyhedron Learning Media. Both are active members of Friends of Wheeling.

P.S. The Pastoral Council hopes this program will be the beginning of regular educational, entertainment and spiritual offerings at St. Paul’s. These will be provided for the enrichment of our own parish members and the larger community. We hope they will all be free, perhaps some with free will offerings, so as many can participate as possible. Please encourage friends and neighbors to attend.

This week: The Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Exodus 17:8-13 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2 Luke 18:1-8

Background: This parable present something of a dilemma for our theology of prayer and of God. Does the God who would send his Son to suffer and die out of love for us really have to be badgered and cajoled in prayer like some “unjust judge who respects neither God nor man”? Does our God refuse us what we need out of spite? Could the Gospel writer Luke have taken a parable of Jesus and, with the addition of a new introduction and new ending, tried to give it a new meaning about prayer? Did Jesus original parable intend God to be in the role of the persistent widow who doggedly seeks justice for her beloved children? This is a completely different take on the parable.

Next Week: Sirach 35:12-14,16-18 2 Timothy 4:6-8,16-18 Luke 18:9-14

Adult Bible Study

Join Fr. Larry and others on Tuesday at 6:30 pm in the office conference room for study and discussion of the

coming Sunday’s Gospel.

Book Recommendation: May I recommend to your spiritual reading a book I re-cently completed called, The Jesus Advantage: A New Approach to a Fuller Life, by Paul J. Donoghue. As a counsellor with many years of experience, Dr. Donoghue has heard the many struggles of his patients so he know the real experiences people face. He seeks to show how the message of Jesus is an advantage in both our personal and professional lives. We all bring baggage into adulthood from our childhood and adoles-cence, whether psychological or spiritual. Confronting this baggage in light of the Gos-pel can open us to a much richer and fuller life. (I purchased a dozen copies of The Jesus Advantage for purchase in the back of the church. They are also available at Amazon.com. - Fr. Larry

Next Sunday, Catholics all over the world will remember our responsibility to spread the Gospel to all people. In addition to praying for the missionary outreach of the church we will all be asked to contribute to this work through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. A special envelop is provided in our packet for this purpose.

COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER Again this year Weirton will have a community dinner on Thanksgiving. This meal is for anyone who wants to come and share a holiday meal with others and for the many homebound in our city. The meal is completely free for everyone and is supported by many business and groups in the community—including our parish. The meal is served from 11 am to 3 pm on Thanksgiv-

ing Day at the Weirton Senior Center and transportation is available. For a ride or to have a meal delivered to a shut-in our homebound person call 304-748-3490 or 304-748-4422. This

annual tradition is sponsored by the Weirton Ministerial Association.
