Palakkad and all the cities of Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore is
the nearest air port and railway station which is 85 km
from Udhagamandalam. On arrival of Ooty bus stand the
participants may take bus / auto towards Theettukal to
reach ICAR - IISWC, Regional Centre which is 5 km
away from the bus stand.
About the Host Institute
Information on Winter School
th Government of India on 20 October 1954, established
a Soil Conservation Research, Demonstration and Training
Centre at Udhagamandalam in Tamil Nadu. Later on, this
Centre along with other such centers under the Ministry of
Agriculture were transferred to the Indian Council of
Agricultural Research in 1967 and subsequently brought
under the administrative control of Central Soil and Water
Conservation Research and Training Institute, Dehradun.
Recently, the Institute has been renamed as Indian Institute
of Soil and Water Conservation.
The primary mandate of this institute is to undertake
research for management of land degradation in a primary
production systems and rehabilitation of degraded lands in
different agro - ecological regions of the country and
Coordinating research network for developing location
specific technologies in the area of soil and water
conservation. The institute also act as centre for training in
research methodologies and updated technologies in soil
and water conservation and watershed management. The
centre is actively involved in developing live models on
Participatory Integrated Watershed Management on
farmers' field. Salaiyur and Ayalur watersheds in semi-arid
region and Iduhatty in high rainfall area are the living
examples for sustainable development and rural
transformation in the region.
Hydrological behaviours of water domains are being
changed due to climate change and plays crucial role in
managing water resources in agricultural and forestry
watersheds. Recent trends in rainfall pattern and
distribution make changes in hydrological regimes and
complicated to understand for efficient planning and
management of water resources. Hence, it is essential to
update the knowledge of scientists of ICAR, SAUs and
State and Central Government organizations on recent
technologies on watershed hydrology. The course module
is designed to understand the advanced tools and models
for predicting hydrological behaviours and climate change
impact on water resources.
Objectives
Course Module
Who can Participate
The main objective of this training is to update the
knowledge of the trainers on watershed hydrology and train
them to use the advanced tools in watershed hydrology for
mitigating climate change impacts on soil and water
resources.
The training curriculum includes class room lectures,
practical and field visits in the following sub-theme areas:
Watershed hydrology
Runoff and soil loss modeling
Installation guidelines for gauging stations
Watershed management
Biological interventions for managing watershed
hydrology
Climate change impacts on soil and water resources
Regional climate change models
Application of advanced tools/models in watershed
hydrology
Modeling the nutrients movements in surface runoff
Hydrology of Soil and water conservation measures,
water harvesting and recharge structures
Farm mechanization in watershed management
Biophysical indicators for monitoring watershed
hydrology
Exposure visit to model agricultural watersheds and
range lands.
Monitoring the hydrological parameters
Application of runoff models and hydrological
behaviour under various landuses
The programme is open to scientists / assistant
professors / subject matter specialists / professionals from
ICAR institute/ SAUs/ CAUs/ Agricultural engineering
faculty of Anna University, Chennai in the cadre of
Assistant Professors or equivalent and above. A
maximum of 25 participants will be selected based on their
experience and area of working. One or two participants
may be sponsored from each Institute / Organization.
