The Will to Lead... The Drive to Excel...

About the Course

From Raw Materials... to Ready to use Products... through Rapid Way…

As 3D printing has become more pervasive, an “on demand” manufacturing technology, the majority of individuals today looking to use 3D printers do not have the background needed to design, perform, and operate this advanced technology. By understanding why training is important and what type of training individuals need, we can safely move this innovative technology in the right direction as it is applied across different industries and applications.Today 3D printing accounts for 35 % of the total manufacturing sector (Wohler 2014) as the market tends to explode further.Additive manufacturing (AM) has the potential to completely redefine manufacturing in certain areas. So of course manufacturers of every size are now looking seriously at 3-D printing as a complement to existing and traditional manufacturing methods.Even though polymers are the most common, metals, paper and even organic tissue are becoming available. The development of new composites could allow the industry to explore new product development in sectors such as electronics (from simple motherboards to robots).Implemented properly, additive manufacturing can significantly reduce material waste, reduce the amount of production steps, inventory being held, and reduce the amount of distinct parts needed for an assembly. But you need a strategy to make it work.Considering this need of Industry, College of Engineering, Pune (COEP) in association with Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), Bangalore are launching a one year post graduate diploma course in “Additive Manufacturing”. The one year course is split into two semesters. The first semester is punctuated with only theory courses and lab work of total 22 credits, while second focuses on project work of 18 credits. The Project work will be carried out at CMTI, Bangalore or in Industry in and around Pune and almost the lab at COEP.

The College of Engineering, Pune

Central Manufacturing Technology Institute, Bangalore

The College of Engineering, Pune, forerunners of technical education in the country, established in the year 1854, is one of the premiere engineering institutes in the country which has consistently maintained it’s tradition of excellence in the field of technical education. Department of Production Engineering and Industrial Management is catering to the needs of all the disciplines. Owing to the manufacturing challenges and competition in industries, Flexible Manufacturing & Automation is slowly and steadily replacing the conventional manufacturing processes in order to increase productivity. The infrastructure is available in the form of CAD / CAM laboratory, precision measuring based Metrology laboratory and Robotics laboratory, Rapid Prototyping Lab and FAB Lab.We are strong in the fundamental disciplines of Production Engineering and in various thematic areas namely, Production Process, Tool Engineering & Design, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Automation Engineering Design and Analysis, Plant Engineering & Maintenance, Industrial Lubrication & Tribology, Mechatronics, Micro and Nano-engineering, Metrology & Quality Control, Reverse Engineering and Rapid Prototyping amongst other subject areas. Our mission is to foster, create and develop capacity amongst students to compete ethically by providing platform for manufacturing inventions of world class standards. Our portfolio of faculty brings complementary skill sets to bear on pressing national needs. The Department offers three Post-graduate degree programs, namely “Manufacturing Engineering and Automation”, “Mechatronics” and “Project Management”. Our Ph.D. programs in Production Engineering and Industrial Engineering are helping to define an emerging discipline on the national and international scene. The Department’s research efforts are having significant impact on our society as well as on the scientific community. Due to increasing trend towards flexibility in manufacture and wide use of computerization in order to integrate various main and supportive systems of production, there is a need today to specialize in some of the important areas like Additive Manufacturing. To the portfolio of courses already offered: Production Engineering Department is embarking on one year post graduate diploma course in the field of Additive Manufacturing for the students who want to learn more about the Rapid Prototyping and machine customization and their potential.

CMTI is a premier R&D organization in the field of manufacturing technology having various activities and Centres of Excellence, amongst others, as under:

· Support and services to the industry in Design & Development, Manufacturing Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, RapidProduct Development, Testing, Technical Information & Publication, Ultra –Precision Engineering, Metrology, CAD, SoftwareFor Manufacturing, Training, etc.

· Nano Manufacturing Technology Centre (NMTC), dedicated to R&D, Product & Process Development, Industrial consultancy, etc. in the field of Nano Manufacturing Technology with extensive networking with Academia, Industry and R&D Organizations.

· Academy of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AEAMT), offering, independently and in collaboration withNational and International Academia, Industry and R&D Organizations, vocational intensive programmes in the areas ofAdvanced Manufacturing, with a view to develop ‘Industry Ready Engineers’.

· Applied Mechatronics Integration Facility – dedicated to integration of applied Mechatronics into industrial products, ParallelKinematic Mechanisms, Robotics and Automation and Applied R&D in these areas with an Industry focus.
