Plant Records

Overlooked new vice-county records for Rubus species in Ireland

It has belatedly come to light that, due to failures in communication, a considerable number of additional Irish vice-counties for which Rubus species were notified in papers published in this

journal during the 1990s failed to find their way on to the cumulative database used for compiling the Atlas of British and Irish brambles (Newton, A. & Randall, R.D. 2004 Botanical Society of the British Isles, London). That work was designed to reflect the state of knowledge up to the end of the year 2000, so any records subsequent to that did not qualify for inclusion. On the other hand, all earlier ones standing on the authority of current specialists in the group were intended to be in. Now that an increasing amount of fieldwork is being carried out on Rubus in Ireland, these accidental omissions from the key reference work in use clearly need bringing to notice.

Two of the five papers affected (1999 Ir. Nat. J. 26: 181-184 and 1999 Ir. Nat. J. 26: 279

281) reached print probably too late in 1999 to be taken into account for the Atlas. The other three

appeared earlier (1990 Ir. Nat. J. 23: 257-262, 1993 Ir. Nat J. 24: 249-253 and 1994 Ir. Nat. J. 24:

375-376), but the 1993 one proves to have been taken into account almost completely.

From the composite list of omissions detected, given below, two records subsequently notified in print as misdeterminations have been excluded, as also have been one or two for which

confirmation now seems desirable in the light of more recent fieldwork. The species order \s that in the Atlas, for the convenience of those who may wish to enter the additions in their copies:
