Our Mission To provide a community where older persons may live in comfort, dignity, and with purpose. Winslow Gardens Winslow Gardens, located in a residential neighborhood in East Providence, RI, offers a combination of independent-living subsidized apartments and affordable assisted living options for low to moderate income individuals 62 years or older. We have efficiency units as well as one bedroom units that can accommodate one and two person living arrangements.

Linn Health Care Center In the adjacent Linn Health Care Center, we offer skilled nursing home care, various levels of post-hospital care, on-site rehabilitation as well as short and long-term care in private or semi-private rooms in a compassionate extended care community.

“You let us do the driving…” ...Your impact

“You all grew on me.” It was thirty years ago when Charlie Domina’s daughter-in-law Val, UMEC’s Ac-tivity Director at the time, just knew that Charlie would be the perfect person with his newly acquired retirement for a posi-tion that she had in mind. And, Charlie gave in. Soon, he found him-self taking residents shopping, driving to local restaurants and other outing destina-tions, and doing whatever else he was called on to do. In 2002, he saw how everyone living at Winslow Gardens just loved it there and he decided to move in himself.

Then in 2007, Charlie decided it was time to give up his van “job,” but that was-n’t the end of Charlie helping out. He began helping out at the Country Store. Over the past thirty years, he has given an incredible 5,867 hours of volunteer service. And, now he is finally ready to really retire. For the past twenty of those thirty years, Charlie has called UMEC home and says that the care and supports that everyone provides there are done with such love, that he just couldn’t think of calling any other place home. And today, at 92, Charlie, who has given so much to so many over the years, is now himself being well taken care of in the place that he loves. Most importantly though, he agrees, “It is finally time for me to retire and let UMEC do the driving!” And, after all he has done, we couldn’t agree more.

Securing Our Future

The Morrill Martin Society is named for the Rev-erend Morrill Martin, a devoted United Methodist, whose vision, determination and energy was instrumen-tal in the establishment of the United Methodist Retire-ment Center. In fact, in 1965, as Executive Secretary of the Board of Missions, Health and Welfare, and Chair of the ‘Three-Fold Challenge’ in the New England Southern Conference, he led the effort to raise nearly half a mil-lion dollars toward funding the retirement center. It opened in 1971 with Morrill as the president of the Board of Trustees.

The Morrill Martin Society recognizes people who continue the tradition of

support for United Methodist Elder Care, through their estate planning and/or major gifts directed to the endowment fund.

One becomes a member through gifts of any of the following methods: Bequests Life insurance policies Gift annuities Charitable trusts Retained life estates Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA’s) Gift valued at $1,000 or more directed to the endowment fund

Please join with the many individuals over the years, who have had the foresight and generosity to plan for the future support of the work of United Methodist Elder Care. We encourage you to consider a charitable investment to the United Methodist Elder Care Communities. For information on legacy, lead-ership gifts or endowed funds, please contact us at (401) 438-4456 or [email protected].

You make a difference…

The future of how we care for our elder generation isn’t clear. In fact, many are rightfully concerned about the healthcare system and the diminishing finan-cial support that many of our residents have come to rely on for their care.

Our mission is to add life to years. As a nonprofit facility, the little funding we

have left over goes to add life to years through activities, special training for staff, and ensuring that our care teams have more time to spend in conversation with our seniors, instead of rushing on to the next patient.

As the government cuts healthcare dollars, it is forcing the needs of those we serve into smaller buckets. We, at United Methodist Elder Care “UMEC,” need to ensure that the quality care offered at Winslow Gardens, Linn Health Care Cen-ter, Arbor Hill, and St. Germain Assisted Living does not diminish as a result. We rely on your generous support to ensure that our seniors do not live in isola-tion and receive the very best of care. As President, I am so honored when people ask me why I help out at UMEC. It’s not just the care my Dad received or the same care my wife’s Grandmother was privileged to receive either. It’s how when I walk through the halls people stop me to say how much they enjoy being there. They tell me how many miles they walk just doing laps down the hallway. I hear that they do not know what would have happened had they not found a home here with us. It’s the Rehabilitation services that gave them their life back and, of course, the caring staff that fulfills our mission every day. You, our generous donors, make a difference every day to those we serve by allowing us to sustain services not reimbursable by government aid or insur-ance. We give you special thanks for making that real difference in the lives of those we serve.

Daniel P. Genannt President, United Methodist Elder Care

You are mission…

Although just two months into my new role as Chief Executive Officer, I have already witnessed several examples of staff members going above and beyond the call of duty to make sure residents are safe, comfortable and cared for in a manner that is consistent with promoting their well-being.

You can be assured; there is a lot of good that is going on within this organi-

zation.

I have also noticed that these exemplary practices of staff members are en-tirely consistent with the intentions and actions of the Board of Trustees. There is a direct and obvious correlation between the work of the Board and the work of the staff that is the result of the culture that permeates the entire organization. It would seem that this culture has been consciously nurtured by the leaders of United Methodist Elder Care for years, and has been passed to the current Board by those who served before them, especially those who con-tinue to serve as Honorary Trustees. It starts with you supporting our mission and flows through Winslow Gar-dens, Linn Health Care Center, Arbor Hill, and St. Germain Manor, manifesting itself in the meaningful interactions that make up the daily lives of the residents. The actions of the staff as well as the direction and tone established by the Board do so much to enhance our resident’s well-being. “We are a community where older persons live in comfort, dignity and pur-pose.”“ We are, indeed. I am happy to be a part of it, and grateful that you choose to support it.

Richard Gamache Chief Executive Officer
