You have done a great disservice by only presenting one side of thepicture when it comes to addictions and pres cribed medications.Your story fails to mention that over half of people with addictionshave co-occurring m ental illness es which require careful treatmentwith medications. One of the most horrible aspects of AA and other 12step programs is the idea that these people only need to work stepsin order to get better. Sometimes such people are even told theyaren't "really sober" if they take their medications. I was in AA for several years and know of several people who killed thems elves or relapsed after going off their medications with encouragement fromother AA members.

MonaLisa, excellent point. Anyone who doubts the point should

Google "midtown group" aa It will bring up information, includingarticles from Time and The Washington Post about an AA groupwhich urged people to go off medication for depression, etc. Severalnearly killed themselves. Also, I think the columni st's comm ents arecontradictory because AA (lots of family members have gone throughit) keeps claiming it's not a religious organization and that sponsorsaren't supposed to tell people what to do.

Many people drink and use other drugs to self medicate because of trauma. Trauma causes physical reactions and changes within thebody. And it really messes with the sleep cycle because the body isoften on high alert even when there's no danger. PIlls might helpsome people, religion might help som e people. But what's probablymost effective is addressing the trauma with a good therapist andfiguring out coping skills. But that can be difficult to do with both thestigma of s eeking help from a therapist and the cost. I'm not makingexcuses for Lohan, but it seems there was a pretty bad familysituation growing up. I remember reports of the police being called i nat one time. And that's only what made the news. I'm guessing therewas s ome violence and that family and she's dealing with theaftermath of trauma. I think there should be a mutlifaceted approachto dealing with trauma. Try the non-drug methods first such asmedi tation, yoga, relaxation im agery, etc. Then if they
