We are the Ashtabula Downtown development Association (ADDA) and our mission is to lead, assist, and support activities that enhance the quality of life in the Downtown Community. We use the fundamentals of the Main Street Approach, along with our five committees (Organization, Promotions, Design, Economic Restructuring and Imagine Ashtabula) to work on preservation-based commercial district revitalization.

There are many communities that have used the Main Street Approach very successfully. Revitalization is a slow process, but the ADDA has a core group of dedicated individuals who believe that our city’s downtown should be and can be a showplace that creates a coming together of community.

As a former owner/operator of a small business on Main Avenue for over 25 years, I have seen many changes take place. Obviously, not all these changes were good as businesses closed and building became vacant. The good news is that things are once again changing. Old buildings are taking on a new look and new businesses are opening. New interest is being generated. Already this year, two new businesses have opened with the hope of more to come. I commend those who are stepping forward to start these adventures for it does take a lot of hard work and resources.

The ADDA BELIEVES IN ASHTABULA!

I am proud to be involved with the dedicated members of ADDA. They put in countless volunteer hours to better this community. I encourage you to come downtown and see for yourself. Ashtabeautiful’s fountain is back! The fountain was donated to the City of Ashtabula by Mr. Top-ky. Larry Fargo, Fargo Machine Co., is leading a group to restore the fountain back to its original glory. The restoration project is being spearheaded by the Ashtabu-la Downtown Development Asso-ciation (ADDA) and is the i scal agent responsible for collecting the donations. It is the goal of ADDA to include as many people as pos-sible to be involved with this proj-ect, demonstrating there is a strong showing of community pride and co-operation for restoring and improving this historic landmark.

Work yet to do, consists of installing a new water line, installing a simple chlorinator to keep algae from growing, and fabricating a portable vacuum cleaner to clean the Fountain l oor. Colored concrete will be poured around the Fountain to eliminate the continual maintenance of vegetation type plants and ground cover. A wrought iron fence with picture panels depicting things of signii cant Ashtabula history will be fabricated and installed. An informational pedestal will be placed near the Fountain with information of the Fountain’s history, restoration, and donor information. Most of the money for all of the work are from vol-unteers and donors. If you would like to contribute to the project, donations may be sent to ADDA, PO Box 362, Ashtabula, OH 44005.

Of course the primary inspiration stems from the meaning of the local Indian word: Ashtabula, “river of many ish”. I foresaw three whirligigs—I’m not sure why. But each needed to be an entirely diferent concept from the others. he big ish,

a bass shape, provided the canvas area to render likenesses of downtown Ashtabula circa 1960 (with a 1960 Corvette front and center) on one side, and Walnut Beach on the other. hen there’s the seven colorful ish sus-pended from stainless steel rods, all actual species. he last is a blue chan-nel cat with four perch, hammered our of aluminum, rotating on a bicycle rim. he ish are lifelike in form and have propellers, which helps bring them to life and makes people smile.

Dedicated July 25, 2015, the Ashtabula Peace Stone is part of the National Coast-to-Coast Great American Peace Trail. The large stone was designed and built by environmental artist David Jakupca. He and his wife, Renate, donated the stone to the city after the 2011 Multicultural Festival.

They have donated stones all across the United States to encour-age positive community participation and to engage children with cross-cultural awareness in order to attain the common goal of peace and diversity with their neighbors.
