The Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP)
was established in April 1988 with financing from the Government
of Japan. The objective of the program is to provide an opportunity
for well qualified citizens of the Banks developing member
countries (DMCs) to undertake postgraduate studies which will assist
the economic and social development of their countries.
ADB DEVELOPING MEMBER COUNTRIES (DMCs)
The following are ADB developing member countries: Afghanistan,
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Peoples
Republic of China, Cook Islands, Fiji Islands, Georgia, Hong Kong
(China), India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Republic of Korea,
Kyrgyz Republic, Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, Malaysia,
Maldives, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of
Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Pakistan, Republic of
Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon
Islands, Sri Lanka, Taipei (China), Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste,
Tonga, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Socialist Republic
of Vietnam.
APPROVED FIELDS OF STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY
> Master/Doctorate of Economics
> Master of Commerce
> Master of International Business
> Master of Transport Management
> Master of International Public Health
> Master of Engineering
ELIGIBILITY FOR THE ADB SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following criteria
> Be a national of an ADB developing member country (See list
above)
> Have gained a firm offer for one of the approved post graduatecourses at the University of Sydney (See list above)
> Have at least two (2) years of full-time professional working
experience
> Must not be more then 35 years old at the time of application.
> Must agree to return to his/her home county after completion of
studies under the Program.
> Applicants must be living or working in their home country.
HOW TO APPLY
To be considered for an ADB-JSP scholarship, you must:
> Lodge a separate application for admission to one of the above
degrees using a University of Sydney postgraduate studies
application form, as well as completing this application form. You
may download and print the University of Sydney application formfrom
www.usyd.edu.au/fstudent/postgrad/apply/index.shtml
> The University of Sydney application processing fee (APF) will be
waived if you lodge your ADB-JSP application form together with
your University of Sydney application form.
> Your ADB-JSP application will only be considered, if you receive a
firm offer to one of the above degree programs prior to the ADB-
JSP application deadline. If your entry is conditional on English
language proficiency or academic documentation, you must
provide all required documents before the ADB-JSP scholarship
deadline.
> Provide evidence of two (2) years work experience and your latest
income tax return (an official letter from an employer may be
accepted in cases where an income tax return is not available).
ABD-JSP APPLICATION DEADLINES
Applicants must receive a firm offer by 31 May 2009 to be
considered for the March 2010 semester
Applicants must receive a firm offer by 30 November 2009 to be
considered for the July 2010 semester.
No applicant will be allowed to apply for the ADB-JSP scholarshipmore than two times.
SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
Each scholarship covers full tuition fees, an allowance for books
and instructional materials, a monthly living allowance, medical
insurance and travel expenses. For scholars engaged in research,
a special grant may be applied to assist in field work and thesis
preparation. In special circumstances, computer literacy, preparatory
language and other similar courses may be covered under the
scholarship.
ADBs SELECTION CRITERIA
> Preference will be given to candidates with outstanding academic
achievement.
> Preference will be given to female candidates.> Preference will be given to applicants with a lower financial
capacity.
> Lower priority will be given to applicants who have previously
studied abroad.
> Lower priority will be given to applicants who are pursuing a
second Masters or a second PhD degree program.
> Applicants with less than two years of work experience will not be
selected.
DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship period is one year. An appropriate extension for
the second year of study of a 1.5 or 2 year program, is conditional
upon the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of performance as
determined by the University of Sydney and with the approval bythe ADB. Please note that PhD candidates can only receive funding
for 2 years.
TOTAL NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
The Asian Development Bank allocates a limited number of
scholarships each year to each participating university. Competition
for an ADB-JSP scholarship is extremely strong. Only candidates who
gain firm admission to the University postgraduate programs will be
considered for the ADB-JSP scholarship.

While the Scholaship will provide most of your financial
requirements during the study period, what other additionalresources do you have if you need them?
The University of Sydney recommends that ADB-JSP applicants
attach a personal statement of:
a: Why you believe you would be the most deserving recipient ofan ADB scholarship and
b: How your studies at the University of Sydney will benefit yourhome country upon your return.
No more than two pages required for personal statement.
Notes for Prospective applicants:
(i) All applicants must provide evidence of a minimum of two yearswork experience. The latest income tax return must be attached (anofficial letter from your employer may be accepted in cases wherean income tax return is not available).
(ii) Only candidates who have gained firm entry to the University ofSydney postrgraduate degree program approved by the ADB by therequired deadline will be considered for an ADB-JSP scholarship.
