Coal is here to stay in IndonesiaDESPITE fluctuating prices, increasing environmental concerns,

promising new gas reserves, a strengthening push for renewable

energy and signs of recovery in nuclear power generation, coal is here

to stay as there is no effective alternative to the large amounts of

power generated from coal, nor is there an effective alternative in

steel-making. This is good news for Indonesia with its large, and grow-

ing, coal industry being a major contributor to the economy.

There have been a few negatives lately with variable prices caused

by global economic fluctuations particularly affecting Indonesia’s major

coal export sources in Asia, and changing government policies which have created

uncertainty for coal miners operating in the country and for foreign investors associated

with the industry. On the positive side has been wet weather in Australia which has hit

coal producing regions, an uncertain political climate in Mongolia and continuing pres-

sures on the industry in North America and Europe.

It remains crucial for the future of the coal industry in Indonesia that the government

plays its cards right in the future, while also balancing domestic demand, environmental,

community and infrastructure issues. With so many conflicting interests this is not an easy

task and there will be mistakes along the way but it appears the government is making

some progress in regards to the industry’s future … and will continue to do so.

This progress is not helped by the Fraser Institute’s recently published survey which

rated Indonesia 96th and last on its index of attractive mining jurisdictions. Although

Indonesia rates as one of the world’s top 10 most prospective places, the number of

respondents who said they would not invest there because of regulatory difficulties and/or

corruption is alarming. This ranking is hard to fathom and difficult to justify as the govern-

ment is making some positive moves, it is the world’s biggest coal exporter, the industry

is growing and there are quite a few foreign companies involved, all of which indicate that

there are much worse jurisdictions for coal investment.

batubara.

A MAIDEN JORC-compliant reserve of 29 million tonnes has been estab-

lished at Realm Resources’ Katingan Ria Project in Central Kalimantan.

Katingan Ria, which is 51%-owned by Realm, is shaping up as a simple,

open-cut operation that will supply low ash and low sulphur coal suited for

modern Indian and Chinese power generation.

Reserve estimates are based on JORC coal resources of 89 million tonnes.

This was established following phase 3 drilling with 6 million tonnes clas-

sified as measured, 44 million as indicated and 39 million as inferred.

Realm’s chairman Richard Rossiter says, “We are pleased to achieve this

important milestone, with sufficient reserves now defined for well over 10

years of operation. This estimate paves the way for possible financing and

development following the expected receipt of the final Pinjam Pakai

(forestry) operations permit in the second half of 2013.”

The project is planned as a 2.5 million tonne/annum open cut mine. The

planned operation consists of an open cut haul back mining method using

hydraulic loaders and rear dump trucks to dump both in-pit and ex-pit. Coal

is transported by 60 tonne road trucks about 45km to a stockpiling and barge

loading facility on the Katingan River. Barges will then transport coal

435km to river mouth for transhipment to coal ships for delivery to market.

Coal is planned to be sold unwashed, meaning there is no metallurgical

treatment required to achieve a saleable product. The coal is expected to be

predominately sold as a low ash and low sulphur coal ideally suited for mod-

ern Indian and Chinese power generation.

Reserves have been estimated by applying realistic mining, metallurgical,

economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social and government factors

to the coal resources. Mining factors (such as recovery and dilution) have

been defined from the proposed open cut mining method.

The pit optimization study, which delineated the life of mine pit used in

the reserves statement, was based on the area that was economical to mine

at a reasonably low product coal sales price. No metallurgical factors are

applicable as the ROM coal is sold as a raw coal without processing.

In addition, due to the seasonality of the Katingan River, coal mining and

barging has been limited to about 9 months in the year with campaign-style

barging planned to take advantage of periods when river depths are fully

navigable. All coal reserves are classified based on the level of detail com-

pleted in the mine planning and also the level of confidence in the resources.

Resources are reported inclusive of reserves.

CADANGAN awal yang memenuhi kriteria

JORC berjumlah 29 juta ton telah ditemui di

Proyek Katingan Ria milik Realm Resources di

Kalimantan Tengah. Katingan Ria 51% kepun-

yaan Realm akan menjadi operasi tambang terbu-

ka yang memproduksi batubara berkadar abu dan

sulfur yang rendah yang diingini pembangkit

tenaga listrik modern India dan Cina.

Cadangan batubara yang memenuhi kriteria

JORC disini diperkirakan berjumlah 89 juta ton.

Pemastian sumber ini dibuat setelah melak-

sanakan program pemboran Fase Ketiga yang

menemukan 6 juta ton terukur, 44 juta ton

terindikasi dan 39 juta ton taksiran.

Komisaris Realm Richard Rossiter men-

gatakan, “Kami sangat gembira mencapai tahap

penting ini, dengan sebuah sumber yang sudah

nyata untuk operasi sepuluh tahun kedepan.

Perkiraan ini membuka jalan untuk memungki-

nan pendanaan dan pengembangan setelah

menerima izin operasi Pinjam Pakai (kehutanan)

Batubara direncanakan dijual tanpa pembersi-

han, dengan kata lain tidak memerlukan pengola-

han matalurgi yang biasanya diperlukan bagi

menghasilkan produk yang dapat dijual. Batubara

itu diperkirakan akan dijual kebanyakannya seba-

gai batubara berkadar abu dan sulfur rendah

sesuai untuk pembangkit tenaga listrik modern

India dan Cina.

Jumlah cadangan diperhitungkan dengan

menggunakan faktor-faktor pertambangan, met-

alurgi, ekonomi, penjualan, hukum, lingkungan,

sosial dan pemerintahan keatas sumber-sumber

batubara.

Faktor pertambangan (seperti pengerukan

kembali dan pencairan) telah diperkirakan dari

metode pertambangan terbuka yang diusulkan.

Studi optimisasi untuk menentukan umur lubang

tambang dan besarnya cadangan, didasarkan

pada luas bidang yang dapat dieksploitasi secara

ekonomis dengan harga jual batubara yang ren-

dah. Tidak ada faktor metalurgi yang harus diper-

hitungkan karena batubara ROM dijual murni

tanpa pengolahan.

Ditambahkan disini, oleh karena perubahan

musim di Sungai Katingan, penambangan dan

pengangkutan batubara terbatas hanya pada sem-

bilan bulan setahun dengan menggunakan pen-

gangkutan berkampanye bagi mengambil kesem-

patan sewaktu dalamnya air sungai dapat dilayari

sepenuhnya. Semua cadangan batubara diklasi-

fikan menurut detil yang yang diperoleh sewaktu

perencanaan tambang dan juga pada tahap keyak-

inan atas sumber-sumber yang dilaporkan terma-

suk cadangan-cadangan.

Maiden 29 million tonne Katingan Ria reserve

Indonesia

Cadangan awal Katingan Ria 29 juta ton

Katingan Ria is in Central Kalimantan near the Katingan River.

PT ADARO Energy intends increasing 2013 pro-

duction to 50-53 million tonnes from 47.2 million

tonnes in 2012 and says the increase will come

from ‘business improvement and cost savings’.

Adaro is a fully integrated coal mining and ener-

gy company from exploration through to power.

It is Indonesia’s second largest thermal coal pro-

ducer, operates the largest single coal mine in

Indonesia and is a significant supplier to the glob-

al seaborne thermal coal market.

The company’s coal characteristics are sub-

bituminous, medium heat value and ultra-low pol-

lutant coal, with total JORC-compliant resources

of 4.6 billion tonnes and reserves of 1.1 billion

tonnes. Because of its environmental characteris-

tics, Adaro’s coal is trademarked as ‘Envirocoal’

with acceptance among blue-chip power utilities.

The 2013 forecasts followed a record final

2012 quarter which saw production reach 13.31

million tonnes, up 7% year-on-year, and sales

volume of 13.96 million tonnes, up 12%.

Demand is increasing, especially from emerging

economies spearheaded by China and India.

2012 was Adaro’s second best production year

with the coal market rebounding towards the end

of the year after challenging conditions. It also

introduced a new Envirocoal product, E4500, a

blend between E5000 (Tutupan) and E4000

(Wara), in order to provide more options to its

customers and to optimize its product portfolio

revenue. Adaro sold 1.95 million tonnes of E4500

in 2012 to customers in Korea and Indonesia.

This year Adaro plans to introduce another

Envirocoal brand, E4700, which will be a stand-

alone non-blended product from the northern area

of Tutupan pit. Also, Adaro is developing an

overburden crushing and conveying system and a

2 x 30MW mine-mouth power plant, both of

which will be commissioned by June 30 2013.

The company maintains geographical diversi-

fication to reduce risk and sells Envirocoal to 49

customers in 17 countries. It remains a leading

domestic supplier with 10.74 million tonnes or

23% of its total sales volume. In 2012 exports to

India amounted to 15% of the total, to Spain 12%,

Japan 9%, Korea 8%, Hong Kong 8%, China 6%,

Malaysia 5%, Taiwan 4% and USA 4%.

Adaro is also increasing production through

acquiring interests in other producers. It has

entered an option to provide a convertible loan for

three years which will result in acquisition of con-

trolling interest in PT Bhakti Energi Persada

(BEP), which owns 7 low-grade thermal licences

in Muara Wahau district, East Kalimantan.

Indonesia

Adaro will continue to expand in 2013

PT ADARO Energy bertekad meningkatkan

jumlah produksi di tahun 2013 ke 50 sampai 53

juta ton dari 47.2 juta ton ditahun 2012 dan men-

gatakan bahwa peningkatan dihasilkan dari

penyempurnaan bisnis serta penghematan biaya.

Adaro adalah sebuah perusahaan pertambangan

batubara sekalian pembangkit tenaga dari mulai

eksplorasi sampai tenaga listrik. Ia adalah

perusahaan kedua terbesar Indonesia yang mem-

produsir batubara panas, mengoperasikan tam-

bang batubara tunggal terbesar di Indonesia dan

supplier pasaran batubara panas dunia melalui

laut yang signifikan.

Ciri-ciri batubara perusahaan ini adalah sub-

bituminous, dengan nilai panas menengah dan

mengandung kadar polusi yang ultra-rendah,

dengan batubara yang memenuhi kriteria JORC

sebanyak 4.6 milyar ton dan cadangan 1,1 milyar

ton. Oleh karena cirri-ciri lingkungannya yang

baik, batubara Adaro ini dijuluki “Batubara

Enviro” dan diterima baik oleh para pembangkit

tenaga listrik ternama.

Ramalan tahun 2013 menyusuli hasil kwartal

akhir tahun 2012 yang meyakinkan dimana pro-

duksi mencapai 13,31 juta ton, naik 7% tahun

demi tahun dan jumlah penjualan 13,96 juta ton

naik dengan 12%. Permintaan terus meningkat

terutama dari ekonomi-ekonomi baru Asia yang

dipelopori oleh Cina dan India.

2012 adalah tahun produksi kedua terbaik den-

gan pasaran batubara membaik setelah keadaan

pasar yang mencabar. Ia juga memperkenalkan

sebuah produk Batubara Enviro baru, yang

diberi nama E4500, sebuah campuran E5000

(Tutupan) dan E4000(Wara), untuk memberikan

lebih banyak lagi pilihan kepada pelanggannya

dan sekalian mengoptimasikan portfolio pendap-

atannya. Adaro menjual 1,95 juta ton E4500

pada tahun 2012 ke pelanggan-pelanggannya di

Korea dan Indonesia.

Tahun ini Adaro merencanakan untuk mem-

perkenalkan satu lagi merek Batubara Enviro,

yaitu E4700, sebuah produk murni (bukan cam-

puran) dari bagian utara tambang Tutupan.

Adaro juga sedang mengembangkan sebuah sis-

tem pencernahan timbunan kotor dan pita pen-

gantar serta 2 x 30MW pmbangkit tenaga listrik

yang diperkirakan akan dikomisikan pada

pertengahan pertama tahun 2013.

Perusahaan tetap meneruskan diversifikasi

lokasi bagi memperkecil risiko dan menjual

Batubara Enviro ke 49 pelanggan di 17 negara.

Ia juga terus berperan sebagai supplier domestik

dengan 10,74 juta ton atau 23% dari jumlah pen-

jualannya. Dalam tahun 2012 ekspor ke India

berjumlah 15% dari keseluruhan, ke Sepanyol

12%, Jepang 9% Korea 8% Hong Kong 8% Cina

6%, Malaysia 5% Taiwan 4% dan AS 4%.

Adora juga sedang meningkatkan produksinya

melalui pembelian saham produsir-produsir lain.

Ia telah juga menyatakan opsi menyediakan pin-

jaman convertible selama tiga tahun yang akan

menguasai PT Bhakti Energi Persada (BEP)

empunya tujuh lisensi batubara panas kadar ren-

dah di kabupaten Muara Wahau di Kalimantan

Timur.

Bukit Asam expands sales and facilitiesSTATE-OWNED coal miner PT Bukit Asam,

which operates mines in South Sumatra and East

Kalimantan, intends to increase coal sales this

year by 25% to 20 million tonnes and expects to

benefit from higher average selling prices. To

facilitate expanding sales, the company has set

aside Rp2.5 trillion (US$258.13 million), includ-

ing a Rp1.5 trillion port expansion at Tarahan in

Lampung province and a US$18 million upgrad-

ing of loading facilities at Kertapati port in

Pelambang, South Sumatra.

Bukit Asam’s president director Milawarma

says the production increase is intended to meet

growing coal demand, especially from foreign

markets. The company’s exports are directed

China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, the

Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. It hopes

exports will grow to reach 50% of total revenues

from the current 45%.

He says the company will this year focus on

exporting high-calorie coal, with a caloric value

above 6000, as it provides better profit margins.

“Japan needs high-calorie coal for its technology

and because that coal produces low dust.”

However, the company will continue exporting

low-calorie coal to India.

Milawarma says the Tarahan terminal expan-

sion is one of important programs needed to

achieve the company’s targets. The expansion

means construction of a new ship loader and a

new dock, and the purchase of four new rotary car

dumper (RCD) units. The expansion will mean

the port can manage large vessels and increase its

annual capacity to between 22 million and 25

million tonnes from 15 million.

By accommodating large vessels, the company

also hopes to reduce overseas freight costs as

Tarahan functions as point of origin for exports to

China, India, Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam. “The

bigger the vessel, the cheaper the cost will be. We

may be able to reduce the freight costs to China,

for example, by $3 per tonne. The reduction will

certainly benefit us,” Milawarma says.

To support the Tarahan port, Bukit Asam is

constructing a US$29.1 million coal-fired power

plant, with capacity of 2x8MW. The plant is slat-

ed to begin operations in the second half of 2013.

It is also increasing the capacity of the railroad

used to transport coal from its Tanjung Enim con-

cession in South Sumatra to Tarahan.

Bukit Asam says it has saved about Rp75 bil-

lion by developing its own coal handling facility

(CHF) at Kertapati. The project was managed by

its own employees. “If we buy a CHF, it costs

around Rp90 billion, but it only costs Rp15 bil-

lion to build ourselves,” says corporate secretary

Joko Pramono. “The CHF is part of the Kertapati

Port renovation. The refurbishment is expected to

increase port capacity to annually accommodate

2.7 million tonnes of coal.”

PERUSAHAAN tambang batubara milik negara

PT Bukit Asam yang mengelola beberapa tam-

bang di Sumatera Selatan dan Kalimantan Timur

berencana meningkatkan 25% penjualan

Rp2,5 triliun (AS$258.13 juta) termasuk Rp1,5

triliun untuk pengembangan pelabuhan di

Tarahan, Propinsi Lampung dan AS$ 18 juta pen-

ingkatan sarana bongkar muat di pelabuhan

Kertapati, Palembang, Sumatera Selatan.

Dirut Bukit Asam Milawarma menyatakan

bahwa peningkatan produksi dirmaksudkan

untuk memenuhi peningkatan permintaan

terutama dari pasaran-pasaran luar negeri.

Perusahaannya mengekspor ke Cina, Hong

Kong, India, Jepang, Malaysia, Filipina, Taiwan

dan Vietnam. Diharapkan ekspor akan mencapai

50% dari hasil pendapatan yang pada waktu ini

berjumlah 45%.

Ia mengatakan bahwa perusahaannya akan

memfokuskan diri pada ekspor batubara

berkalorifik tinggi (diatas 6000) karena ini men-

datangkan keuntungan yang lebih baik. “Jepang

memerlukan batubara berkalorifik tinggi untuk

teknologinya dan karena batubara tersebut men-

geluarkan kadar abu yang rendah”. Namun

perusahaan akan terus mengekspor batubara

berkalorifik rendah ke India.

Milawarma mengatakan bahwa pengemban-

gan pelabuhan Tarahan adalah salah satu program

penting bagi mencapai tujuan-tujuan perusahaan.

Ini menyangkut konstruksi loader dan dock baru

serta pembelian empat pembongkar gerbong

putar (rotary car dumper (RCD)). Dengan

demikian pelabuhan dapat mengelola kapal-kapal

besar yang akan meningkatkan kapasitas dari 15

ton ke antara 22 sampai 25 juta ton setahun.

Perusahaan juga mengharapkan ongkos pen-

gangkutan keluar negeri akan berkurang dengan

pengelolaan kapal-kapal besar sehingga Tarahan

berfungsi sebagai titik mula ekspor ke Cina,

India, Jepang, Taiwan dan Vietnam. “Lebih besar

kapalnya lebih murah ongkosnya. Sebagai con-

toh, kita dapat mengurangkan ongkos-ongkos

pengangkutan ke Cina dengan $3 per ton.

Pengurangan ini pasti menguntungkan kami.”

Kata Milawarma.

Bagi menunjang operasi pelabuhan Tarahan,

Bukit Asam sedang membangun pembangkit

tenaga listrik berkapasitas 2 x 8 MW menggu-

nakan bahan bakar batubara yang diharapkan

bermula operasi pada pertengahan kedua 2013. Ia

juga akan meningkatkan kapasitas pengangkutan

keretapi untuk batubara dari konsesi Tanjung

Enim nya in Sumatera Selatan ke Tarahan.

Bukit Asam menyatakan bahwa dengan mem-

bangun sendiri sarana penanganan batubaranya di

Kertapati ia telah menghemat kira-kira Rp75 mil-

yar. Proyek tersebut dikelola oleh staff mereka

sendiri. “Untuk membeli CHF akan memakan

ongkos Rp90 milyar sedangkan membangunnya

sendiri hanya memakan biaya Rp15 milyar,” kata

Joko Pramono, Sekretaris eksekutif.

“CHF adalah bagian dari renovasi Pelabuhan

Kertapati. Pembaruan ini diharapkan

meningkatkan kapasitas pelabuhan ke 2,7 juta ton

batubara setahun” katanya.

Bukit Asam tingkatkan pemasaran dan sarana-sarananya

PT Bukit Asam has assembled an impressive team to advance its energy projects in

Indonesia.

ACQUISITION of a company which

holds land near Sakari Resources’

Jembayan Coal Project will improve

transport logistics and has potential to

create substantial savings in haulage

costs. Sakari’s agreement to purchase fur-

ther concessions to the north of the mine

may also unlock wider coal reserves in

the Separi basin of Kalimantan.

Sakari has acquired PT Tri Tunggal

Lestari Bersama, a company that owns

an exclusive right of way to convey coal

over Pertamina’s gas pipelines that lie to

the east of the Separi basin and

Jembayan mine. Sakari will, therefore,

be able to open an overland route for

transporting coal from Jembayan and the

Separi region to the coast.

The distance from Jembayan to the

coast in a direct overland route would be

about 40km compared to the current

route that involves hauling coal 30km to

Mahakam River and then barging it over

distances of around 120km to ship load-

ing anchorages.

Sakari’s pre-feasibility studies indi-

cate a direct transport route to the east

coast would result in substantial savings

in Jembayan haulage costs.

The Mahakam River is increasingly

busy as a shipping route for various

commodities in inland Kalimantan and

an alternative route for transporting coal

would significantly facilitate transporta-

tion operations for Jembayan.

As well as the right of way, Tri Tunggal owns

land assets and intellectual property assets in

the form of engineering studies for a bridge

over the gas pipelines. Sakari will now finalize

more detailed studies on the eastern cor-

ridor.

The six concessions which Sakari

aims to purchase to the north of

Jembayan could also benefit from the

alternative transport route. Due dili-

gence on these concessions was sched-

uled to begin in December.

Cash costs at the Jembayan opera-

tions have reduced from their peak of

US$68 per tonne in the first quarter of

2012 to US$54.70 in the third quarter

while production continues its upward

trend, reaching 2.35 million tonnes, the

highest quarterly rate for 2012. It was

also 4% higher than the corresponding

quarter in 2011.

At Sebuku mine production in the

Acquisition to improve Jembayan logistics

PEROLEHAN sebuah perusahaan yang mem-

punyai tanah dekat Proyek Batubara Jembayan

milik Sakari Resources akan membantu logistika

pengangkutan dan berpotensi menghemat

ongkos-ongkos pengangkutan secara signifikan.

Persetujuan oleh Sakari untuk membeli lagi

konsesi-konsesi disebelah utara tambang berke-

mungkinan membuka pula cadangan-cadangan

batubara di daerah Separi di Kalimantan.

Sakari telah memperoleh PT Tri Tunggal

Lestari Bersama yang mempunyai hak eksklusif

mengangkut batubara diatas pipa-pipa gas

Pertamina di sebelah timur daerah Separi dan

tambang Jembayan. Dengan demikian, Sakari

dapat membuka rute jalan darat untuk men-

gangkut batubara dari jembayan dan Separi ke

pesisir.

Jarak jalan darat langsung dari Jembayan ke

pesisir adalah kurang lebih 40 km ketimbang

rute sekarang yang terdiri dari mengangkut

batubara sejauh 30 km ke Sungai Mahakam

diteruskan dengan tongkang ke lokasi kapal

untuk dimuat yang jaraknya adalah 120 km.

Studi pra-feasibility yang dilaksanakan Sakari

menunjukkan bahwa pengangkutan rute lang-

sung ke pesisir timur akan menghemat besar

ongkos pengangkutan di Jembayan.

Disamping itu, Sungai Mahakam juga terus

bertambah sibuk sebagai jalur perkapalan mem-

bawa bermacam komoditas dari daratan Kali -

mantan. Jalur alternatif pengangkutan batubara

studi teknik pembangunan sebuah jembatan

diatas pipa-pipa gas. Sekarang Sakari akan

menyelesaikan studi-studi yang lebih mendetil di

gerbang timur.

Keenam konsesi di bagian utara Jembayan

yang ingin dibeli Sakari juga akan mendapat

keuntungan dari rute alternatif pengangkutan itu.

Due diligence atas konsesi-konsesi ini diren-

canakan bermulai pada bulan Desember.

Ongkos-ongkos tunai operasi Jembayan telah

berkurang dari puncaknya yaitu AS$68 per ton di

kwartal pertama tahun 2012 ke AS$54.70 pada

kwartal ketiga, sedangkan produksi terus

meningkat mencapai 2.35 juta ton, yaitu jumlah

tertinggi untuk tahun 2012. Ini juga 4% melebihi

hasil kwartal yang sama di tahun 2011.

Produksi tambang Sebuku mencapai 1,082

tahun 2012.

Juga ada peningkatan dalam cadangan yang

mudah jual di Sebuku ke 26.5 juta ton.

Sementara itu rencana pengambil-alihan

Sakari oleh group pertambangan PTT anak

perusahaan PTT International tetnyata berhasil

dengan Sakari dicabut dari pendaftaran Papan

Utama bursa Singapura setelah PTT mendapat

lebih dari 93% Sakari.

ASX-LISTED Indus Coal intends to initiate a JORC-compliant drilling

program on its MukoMuko Coal Project in Bengkulu province of

Western Sumatra by the end of June. The drilling was delayed while the

company focused on completing legal and technical due diligence, and

financing and settling the first stage of the purchase of the Jambi Coal

Projects, also in Sumatra.

While completing this work Indus has ensured that the MukoMuko

project has met its environmental and forestry commitments, continued

to accumulate data for the preliminary feasibility study, maintained

ongoing native title commitments in the local villages and progressed the

exploration program via additional outcrop sampling.

MukoMuko covers 2337 hectares of which about 63% encompasses

the coal-bearing Lemau Formation and about 19% the secondary

prospective Bitunan formation.

Late last year Indus agreed to a series of transactions to purchase an

indirect interest in three thermal coal-bearing concessions totalling

14,394 hectares in the thermal coal producing region of Jambi province.

In early 2013 it purchased a 38% stake in BEP and BMC, representing

stage 1 of the acquisition. The company has the right to purchase a fur-

ther 38% interest while the vendor has the option to sell to Indus a fur-

ther 24% shareholding, subject to the satisfaction of certain conditions.

The concessions are Block 7 (5001 hectares), Block 8 (4380 hectares)

and Block 9 (5013 hectares) in Jambi province, to the east of the

MukoMuko project and with similar risk/reward profile. All three have

granted exploration licence IUPs while Block 9 also has an AMDAL

clearance (environmental licence). Indus expected that a production IUP

and all necessary forestry permits would be granted for Block 9 during

the first quarter of 2013. AMDAL clearances and forestry permits for the

other blocks are expected before June 30.

Numerous operating coal mines are in close proximity to all three con-

cessions with stripping rates between 1:1 and 1:6. Regional costs of coal

mine production are about US$32 per tonne while the coal being mined

has an average calorific value of 5300-5700 kcal/kg and sulphur content

of 0.059-1.04%, and sells for US$48 per tonne.

A 150-hole JORC-compliant drilling program for 15,000 metres has

been planned across the concessions and will start with a 70-hole cam-

paign on Block 9 over a ‘sweet spot’ of 1000 hectares.

Indus is focused on bringing the MukoMuko and Jambi projects to

production over the next 12 months and is continuing to build scale with

local coal partner PT Param Energy, a company founded by Indus exec-

utive director Vinay Hariani and which is a vertically integrated coal

mining business with 15 years of experience in coal project identifica-

tion, coal mining and international coal trading in Indonesia.

Indus Coal to initiateMukoMuko drilling

perhutanan, terus mengumpulkan data untuk feasibility study awal, men-

meneruskan program eksplorasi melalui sampel outcrop tambahan.

saham setelah memenuhi beberapa syarat-syarat tertentu.

diharapkan sebelum 30 Juni.

Banyak lagi tambang-tambang batubara lain beroperasi didekat ketiga

konsesi-konsesi tersebut dengan nasbah stripping antara 1:1 sampai 1:6.

Biaya-biaya setempat untuk produksi batubara berkisar sekitar AS$32 per

tonne sedangkan batubaranya mempunyai nilai kalorifis antara 5300-5700

kcal/kg dan kadar sulfur 0.059-1.04% dan dijual seharga AS$48 per tonne.

Sebuah program pemboran 150 lubang memenuhi syarat JORC sepan-

mitra lokal PT Param Energy, sebuah perusahaan pertambangan batubara

CHALLENGER Deep Resources’ subsidiary PT

Bestindo Energy has entered an exclusivity

agreement relating to the right to mine and mar-

ket coal from the KEM Coal Project in Central

Kalimantan.

The agreement with CV Kara Elmas Madenleri

(KEM) gives Challenger the exclusive right, for

60 days, to conduct due diligence on the KEM

project and to enter into a mining operation-pro-

duction agreement, which would give Challenger

full control of all coal production and marketing

within the project area.

KEM owns the KEM project which is in

Murah Teweh district and 12km east of the Barito

River, the main river transportation route for the

area. The project covers 335 hectares with an IUP

operation production licence in place. It is a

multi-seam high-quality thermal coal project with

existing infrastructure in place to enable an early

start to production, including a 12km haul road

and loading jetty. Coal can be sold FOB barge at

the jetty site or transhipped further downstream to

a stockpile for later, direct loading on the mother

vessel for shipment to final consumption markets.

Challenger has staff onsite to complete due

diligence, to begin mine plan drilling and to pre-

pare infrastructure agreements. “This is a very

important development for Challenger,” says the

company’s president and CEO Ranjeet Sunder.

“The KEM project gives us the potential to gen-

erate near-term cash flow which will provide

funding for our Tabang project development and

will enable us to capitalize on other high-quality

opportunities, while minimizing dilution to share-

holders during these difficult capital markets. We

view this project as having very low risk and rel-

atively low capital requirements which are both

key elements in our Indonesian coal strategy.”

This agreement follows an MoU signed last

year with Indonesian coal marketing firm, PT

Surya Dinamika Lestari (SDL) to market domes-

tic thermal coal from the Tabang project in East

Kalimantan. Under the terms of the MOU the

parties will work together to develop a marketing

plan and negotiate a formal coal sales agreement

for Tabang coal production. SDL will seek to

secure domestic buyers for the coal and will

advise Challenger on the best pricing parameters

for different production scenarios.

Tabang comprises four properties in close

proximity. The ATRP and Pelangi properties are

under formal purchase contracts while CBM and

Inhuwa Purba (IP) are under exclusive MoUs.

Challenger is developing Tabang using a three-

step approach. Step one involves construction of

a short-haul road and jetty facility on the Belayan

River for production from the ATRP property.

Steps two and three add infrastructure and devel-

opment of the Pelangi, CBM and IP properties.

After review, Challenger has determined that the

Tabang project has favourable coal economics for

export to India and China, while also supplying a

burgeoning Indonesian domestic power market as

its economy grows.

ungkinan-kemungkinan bermutu tinggi lain, sam-

bil memperkecil pengurangan untuk pemegang

saham dalam pasar modal waktu ini. Kami meli-

relative rendah. Kedua-duanya adalah unsur pent-

ing dalam strategi batubara Indonesia kami.”

Persetujuan ini menyusul MoU dengan

perusahaan pemasaran batubara Indonesia, PT

Surya Din amika Lestari (SDL) yang ditandatan-

gani tahun lalu untuk memasarkan batubara

panas dari proyek Tabang di Kalimantan Timur

di dalam negeri. Menurut MoU tersebut, kedua

belah pihak akan bekerjasama membuat rencana

pem a saran dan mendapatkan persetujuan pen-

jualan batubara resmi untuk produksi batubara

Tabang.

gusulkan parameter-parameter penentuan harga

yang terbaik kepada Challenger bagi bermacam

skenario produksi.

Tabang terdiri dari empat kawasan yang

berdekatan. Kawasan ATRP dan Pelangi masuk

dalam kontrak beli sedangkan CBM dan Inhuwa

Purba (IP) ada dibawah MoU Eksklusif.

Challenger sedang mengembangkan Tabang

menggunakan pendekatan tiga langkah. Langkah

KILLARA Resources is continuing its due dili-

gence on the Bengkulu Coal Project in Sumatra

and is negotiating an extension owing to wet

weather which has prevented measurement of

coal seam thicknesses in the recently identified

outcrops.

The rain increased river and tributary water lev-

els and the proposed extension is expected to

allow for re-assessment of the seams under more

favourable field conditions.

The Bengkulu project covers 2000 hectares of

the larger Bengkulu Forearc Basin. Regional geo-

logical mapping from Indonesia’s Ministry or

Mining and Energy Resources along with initial

Killara field work shows this covering the

prospective Lemau Formation and an area of

Quarternary volcanics.

Lemau is the foremost coal-bearing formation

in Bengkulu province.

Despite poor field conditions due to an extend-

ed wet season, Killara geologists identified and

sampled two coal outcrops from the Lemau

Formation with a potential strike length of 3.5km.

Laboratory analysis of the samples was within

expected ranges for the formation and indicates

the presence of a moderate energy, direct export

thermal coal with low levels of ash and sulphur.

The due diligence follows the executive of a

Memorandum of Understanding agreeing on

commercial terms to acquire an 85% interest in

the Bengkulu province tenement.

The due diligence has comprised general recon-

naissance mapping and representative sampling of

coal occurrences along with socialization pro-

grams. Success will lead to a stratigraphic drilling

campaign.

The project is 100% APL forestry (Areal

Pengunaan Lain or non-forestry) and no permits

are required from the Indonesian Forestry

Department to complete exploration or production

activities.

Following successful completion of the due

diligence Killara has the option to proceed with

the transaction by way of a series of payments

which in total amounts to US$2.75 million.

If due diligence is favourable Killara can elect

to pay US$100,000 for the concession as an

option exercise payment, a further US$100,000

upon receipt of necessary permits to enable explo-

ration, US$250,000 upon completion of an initial

resource drilling program, US$300,000 upon the

upgrade of concessions to production status,

US$500,000 upon completion of a bankable feasi-

bility study and decision to mine, and US$1.5 mil-

lion to commence commercial production.

Killara has also conducted legal due diligence

on the Nunukan Coal Project in East Kalimantan.

The project comprises three IUPs that cover

15,103 hectares of the largely unexplored Tarakan

Basin coal province.

The due diligence showed that two of the IUPs

were ‘Clean & Clear’ based on information pro-

vided by the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and

Mining Resources, however the third one had

expired.

Given its integral nature to the Nunukan proj-

ect, Killara has terminated any further work on the

project pending re-issuance of the ‘Clean & Clear’

status.

Perpanjangan

waktu akan memungkinkan evaluasi ulang dalam

kondisi yang lebih baik.

Proyek Bengkulu ini mencakup 2000 hektar

dari Lingkaran Muka Dataran Bengkulu. Peta

geologis setempat dari Kementerian

Pertambangan dan Energi serta kerja-kerja awal

Killara menunjukkan bahwa kawasan ini meliputi

daerah prospektif Formasi Lemau yang terdiri

dari volcanis kwarternir.

Lemau mempunyai formasi batubara utama di

Propinsi Bengkulu.

Walaupun kondisi tidak memuaskan oleh kare-

na hujan yang berterusan, geolog-geolog Killara

telah menemukan dan mencoba dua outcrops dari

Formasi Lemau yang diperkirakan berpotensi

panjang 3.5 km.

Analisa laboratorium kedua sampel berada

rendah.

Due diligence dilaksanakan setelah adanya

MoU yang menyetujui syarat komersil bagi men-

dapatkan 85% andil dalam tenement Proponsi

Bengkulu itu. Due diligence ini terdiri dari dan

termasuk pemetaan umum dan percobaan

batubara serta program-program sosialisasi.

Keberhasilan akan membawa kampanye pembo-

ran stratigrafis.

Proyek ini adalah 100% APL perhutanan

(Areal Penggunaan Lain atau non-perhutanan)

dan tidak memerlukan izin-izin dari Departemen

Perhutanan Indonesia bagi menyelesaikan

eksplorasi atau kegiatan-kegiatan produksi.

Seselesainya due diligence yang berhasil Killara

mempunyai opsi untuk melaksanakan transaksi

menerusi pembayaran sejumlah AS$2,75 juta.

Seandainya due diligence sukses, Killara akan

membayar AS$100,000 sebagai pembayaran opsi

bagi konsensi tersebut, ditambah dengan

AS$100,000 lagi setelah menerima izin-izin yang

diperlukan untuk dapat memulai eksplorasi,

AS$250,000 seselesainya program pemboran

permulaan, AS$300,000 ketika peningkatakan

status konsesi ke produksi, AS$500,000 sesele-

sainya feasibility study dan keputusan untuk

penambangan dan AS$1,5 juta untuk memulai

produksi komersil.

Killara telah pula melaksanakan due diligence

hukum di Proyek Batubara Nunukan di

Kalimantan Timur. Proyek ini terdiri dari tiga IUP

mencakup 15,103 hektar daerah propinsi

batubara dataran Tarakan yang belum pernah

dieksplorasi.

Berdasarkan informasi Kementerian Sumber

Tenaga dan Pertambangan Indonesia,dua IUP

dinyatakan ‘Bersih dan jelas’ sedangkan yang

ketiga telah daluwarsa.

Karena proyek Nunukan bersifat satuan,

Killara telah menghentikan kegiatan dalam

proyek ini sampai mendapatkan status ‘Bersih

dan Jelas’.

Examining coal outcrops on a Killara Resources’ Indonesian prospect.

SOUTH East Asia Resources, formerly Victory

West Metals, has finalized acquisition of a

Singapore-based company, South East Asia

Energy Resources (SEAE), which holds interests

in a number of Indonesian thermal and coking

coal projects, and has the ability to secure further

projects. The most recent coking coal project

acquired by the new company late last year is

Penajam East in East Kalimantan.

The acquisition agreement provides South East

Asia with full title to all coal and production to

existing jetty port facilities 34km from the mine.

All infrastructure is in place for immediate mine

production, including camp, mining equipment,

haul road and processing crushing facilities.

The Penajam East project comprises two cok-

ing coal mining concessions with total area of 164

hectares with IUP Production approval over the

area. The project is within the Kutai Basin and has

been subject to previous mining and exploration

which should advance the development process.

Five mining pits are already open with overbur-

den removed and are available for recommission-

ing leading to reduced start-up costs and time.

Coal thickness ranges between 0.45 metres and

1.1 metres, and there are additional opportunities

for further exploration.

The coal quality has been sampled over the 4

coal seams by SEAE geologists and has been sent

for independent analysis. The company will com-

mercially market the coal as coking coal and

negotiations are under way with a Chinese steel

mill in this regard.

After mobilizing at the concession in December

to undertake further drilling, mine planning and

preparation for coal production, South East Asia

expected to begin production from existing

exposed coal seams during the first quarter of

2013. There are no JORC-compliant reserves or

resources reportable for this project at this stage.

The development strategy was to begin opera-

tions in concession 1 in the most recently mined

open pit where the coal seam is exposed. Coal

produced here is expected to have medium to high

sulphur and the company proposes to blend it with

appropriate medium grade, low sulphur coal to

reduce the project’s sulphur content to produce

medium grade coal with less than 1% sulphur suit-

able for exporting.

Following initial production, stage 2 will

involve further exploration of the concession, in

particular concession 2. Further drilling and

exploration will continue throughout both conces-

sions to look for additional mining opportunities.

The Penajam East project will run concurrently

with development of South East Asia’s other East

and South Kalimantan thermal coal develop-

ments. On December 5, 2012, SEAE entered into

an advanced funding/offtake arrangement term

sheet with Guandong Era Elemen Resources.

Guandong agreed to provide prepayment finance

of US$3 million to SEAE, an advance which sat-

isfies the condition of the acquisition of SEAE

that South East Asia raises $3 million.

SOUTH East Asia Resources yang sebelumnya

dikenal sebagai Victory West Metals, telah menye-

lesaikan akuisisi sebuah perusahaan berpusat di

Singapura, yaitu South East Asia Energy Res o u r -

lokasi tambang. Seluruh infrastruktur telah terse-

dia untuk dapat segera memulai produksi, terma-

suk kemah, alat-alat pertambangan, jalan pen-

gangkutan dan sarana proses pemecahan.

Proyek Penajam Timur terdiri dari dua konsesi

tambang batubara coking sejumlah 164 hektar

Lima lubang tambang telah digali, bebas over-

independen. Perusahaan akan memasarkan

batubara ini secara komersil sebagai batubara cok-

ing dan perbincangan sedang berlangsung dengan

sebuah pabrik besi Cina dalam hal ini.

Setelah mengadakan kegiatan di konsesi terse-

but pada bulan Desember untuk pemboran lanjut,

perencaan tambang dan persiapan produksi

batubara, South East Asia merencanakan memulai

sulfur proyek sehingga menghasilkan batubara

bermutu medium dengan kadar sulfur kurang dari

1% dan dapat diekspor.

Setelah produksi pertama, tahap kedua ialah

mengeksplorasi lanjut konsesi, terutama konsesi

2. Pemboran dan eksplorasi akan diteruskan dike-

dua-dua konsesi untuk mencari kemungkinan-

kemungkinan penambangan tambahan.

Proyek Penajam Timur ini dilaksanakan

bersamaan dengan pengembangan-pengemban-

gan batubara panas South East Asia lainnya di

timur dan selatan Kalimantan. Pada tanggal 5

Desember 2012, SEAE menyetujui pendanaan

muka/offtake dengan Guandong Era Elemen

Resources. Guandong setuju untuk menyediakan

pembayaran muka sebesar AS$3 juta kepada

SEAE. Jumlah ini adalah juga salah satu syarat

akuisisi SEAE.

Palace considers Petangis acquisition

prospek menghasilkan assay menunjukkan nilai

kalorifis antara 6876-7149 Kcal/kg, sulfur 1.07%-

1.54% dan isi abu 11.26% -16.02%. Ia berada di

Formasi Tanjung lebih kurang 127km diselatan

Balikpapan dan 4km diutara proyek Paser.

Disekeliling kawasan konsensi-konsensi ini

sudah ada jalan pengangkutan yang baik dan

lokasi-lokasi jetty dalam jarak 14km. Juga terdap-

at pelabuhan air dalam didekatnya.

Sebuah proses due diligence yang menyeluruh

termasuk program pemboran, telah dimulai pada

kwartal pertama dan laporan mutu batubara

diharapkan diterima pada bulan Maret.

100 hektar Petangis itu berada di kawasan lebih

besar yaitu 1000 hektar yang mempunyai lisensi

survei umum walaupun MoU hanya menyangkut

kawasan yang lebih kecil tersebut. Permohonan

menukar status konsensi 1000 hektar itu dari lisen-

si survei umum ke eksplorasi telah diserahkan

kepada yang berwenang setempat pada awal

Desember 2012. Kalau disetujui Palace dapat

memobilisir tim pemboran dan melaksanakan

proses due diligence penuh.

Namun analisa hasil pemboran lanjut dari

proyek Paser menunjukkan isi sulfur yang lebih

tinggi dari rata-rata sehingga membuat proyek

tersebut kurang menarik ketimbang harga komod-

itas pada masa ini, karenanyaia telah menghen-

tikan proyek yang diusulkan. Palace tetap

meneruskan objektif-objektif pertambangannya di

kawasan itu dan sebagai prioritas telah diputuskan

untuk menyiasat lanjut proyek Petangis dan

menentukan kemungkinan ekonominya.

Hasil-hasil Paser tersebut menyusuli program

pemboran 10 lubang awal bagi mengusut mutu

batubara, kedalaman, tebal dan luasrnya seam

batubara dibawah permukaan.

Sebuah program percobaan/sampel diseluas 43

hektar menghasilkan penyerahan sekitar 150kg

tatif.

Pada tanggal 16 April, 2012, Palace mengu-

mumkan telah membuat perjanjian dengan

pemegang-pemegang saham asal Paser mengenai

akuisisi proyek Paser di Kalimantan Timur.

Paser Pte Ltd has signed an MoU with PT

Punggungan Tengah Samudera Indonesia for

exclusive rights to explore, mine and market coal

from the Petangis project in East Kalimantan.

With exploration infrastructure in place and

with Petangis being in close proximity to its

existing Paser project, Palace is in a strong posi-

tion to quickly mobilize its technical teams and

assess the project’s potential efficiently and cost

effectively.

Palace believes the 100 hectare Petangis proj-

ect is highly prospective with initial coal samples

taken from outcrops within the prospect area

returning assay results including calorific values

from 6876-7149 Kcal/kg, 1.07%-1.54% sulphur

and 11.26%-16.02% ash content. It lies within

the Tanjung Formation and is about 127km

southwest of Balikpapan and about 4km north of

the Paser project.

Good quality haul roads exist in and around

the concessions area with jetty locations within

14km. These are also within a short distance to a

deep water harbour with an existing operational

port nearby.

A comprehensive due diligence process,

including a drill program, began during the first

quarter with a coal quality report expected to be

received during March.

The 100 hectares of Petangis is within a

greater 1000 hectare general survey licence but

the MoU covers the lesser area. An application to

convert the 1000 hectare concession from a gen-

eral survey status to exploration status was sub-

mitted to the local authority in early December

2012.

If granted the exploration status will provide

Palace with the ability to mobilize a drill team

and undertake its full due diligence process.

Further analysis of drill results from the Paser

project returned higher than expected average

sulphur content at depth rendering the project

less attractive at current commodity prices and

causing a temporary suspension of the proposed

project. Palace continues to pursue its mining

objectives in the region and as a matter of prior-

ity has decided to further investigate the Petangis

project and determine the economic viability.

The Paser results followed an initial 10-hole

drill program designed to investigate coal quali-

ty, depth, thickness and spread of coal seams

below surface.

A sampling program across the 43 hectares

resulted in submission of about 150kg of coal

samples to a laboratory in Samarinda for coal

quality and processing analysis. The samples

were collected along strike and down dip of the

coal seams within the location to ensure a repre-

sentative sampling program.

On April 16, 2012, Palace announced that it

had entered into a heads of agreement with the

original Paser shareholders with regard to acqui-

sition of the Paser project in East Kalimantan.

Altura acquires interest in operating project

pertambangan PT Binamitra Sumberarta.

Operasi Delta ini mengeluarkan dan menjual

batubara panas berenergi menengah sebesar 1,5

tambangan. Tabalong mempunyai 13,385 juta ton

batubara panas bernilai tinggi yang memenuhi

syarat-syarat JORC.

Tambang Delta terletak diatas IUP sebesar 1.260

hektar di delta Sungai Mahakam berdekatan den-

gan Balikpapan dan Samarinda. Penambangan

gai. Pusat pemrosesan yang berkapasitas mempro-

dusir 1000 ton/jam terletak ditengah-tengah

kawasan pertambangan dengan sarana pelabuhan

5 km dari sini. Kapasitas tumpukan ialah 75.000

ton yang dianggap cukup bagi menyimpan produk

hingga diperlukan di sarana bongkar muat.

Kemampuan mengendali seluruh proses dari

penambangan sampai ke pemuatan tongkang

memberikan fleksibilitas yang maksimum dalam

hal rantai suplai. Produk batubara diangkut dengan

truk ke sarana bongkar muat 5km disebelah timur

tempat pemrosesan. Sarana ini berkapasitas

memuat 800 ton per jam. Batubara lalu diangkut

menggunakan tongkang berkapasitas 8000 ton ke

sarana bongkar muat kapal lepas pantai untuk

kapal-kapal berkapasitas kelas Handysize sampai

Panamax.

Sumber-sumber di daerah IUP terletak di kaki

bukit batu dan berjumlah 57 juta ton. Batubara

yang diprodusir dan dijual waktu ini adalah

batubara panas berenergi menengah yang sangat

baik dengan nilai kalorifik 5500-5700 kcal/kg ker-

ing dan 4800-5000 kcal/kg kotor.

Altura sedang menggunakan konsultan bebas

untuk melihat kembali rencana pertambangannya

dengan maksud menyelesaikan estimasi cadangan

batubara yang memenuhi syarat-syarat JORC pada

kwartal kedua tahun 2013. Tentunya juga banyak

peluang untuk meningkatkan sumber-sumber

melalui pemboran daerah-daerah yang belum

dieksplorasi sebelum ini.

ACQUISITION of 33% of an operating East

Kalimantan coal mine has transformed Altura

Mining from explorer and developer into a pro-

ducer. The transaction provides the ASX-listed

company with a direct interest in PT Delta

Ultima Coal, the owner and operator of the PT

Binamitra Sumberarta tenement.

The Delta operation produces and sells a

medium energy thermal coal at an annual rate of

1.5 million tonnes but plans are in place to lift

annual production and sales to 2.0 million tonnes

by 2015. The mine has two defined resource

areas with Gunung Lampu in the east of the ten-

ement and Noni in the west, both serviced by a

road network to the processing plant.

Altura also has the Tabalong project in South

Kalimantan with first production expected later in

2013, pending final mining approval. Tabalong

has a JORC-compliant resource of 13.385 million

tonnes of high-grade thermal coal.

The Delta mine is on a 1260 hectare IUP in the

Mahakam River delta in close proximity to the

centres of Balikpapan and Samarinda. Coal is

mined via open pit methods, crushed on site,

loaded on barges at the company-owned loading

facility on a river in the delta and barged to an

offshore loading point.

PT Delta Ultima Coal owns and operates all

the coal processing plant and machinery neces-

sary to lift, crush and fill barges from its load-out

facility at the river barging site. The processing

plant with hourly capacity of 1000 tonnes is cen-

trally located to the mining areas with the port

facility on a river 5km from the processing plant.

The plant has a stockpile capacity of 75,000

tonnes which is sufficient for storage of product

until required at the barge loading facility.

The ability to control the process from the run-

of-mine delivery point to loading of barges for

cargoes allows for maximum flexibility for the

supply chain. Product coal is transported by

truck to the barge loading facility 5km east of the

processing plant. This facility has the capacity to

load barges at an hourly rate of up to 800 tonnes.

Coal is transported by 8000 tonne barges to the

offshore loading point for transfer to ships vary-

ing in size from Handysize to Panamax vessels.

The coal resources in the IUP are on the limbs

of an anticline and total some 57 million tonnes.

Coal currently produced and sold is a highly

desirable medium energy thermal coal with a

calorific value on an air dried bases of 5500-

5700 kcal/kg and a gross as received basis of

4800-5000 kcal/kg.

Altura has engaged independent consultants to

review the mine plan with a view to completion

of JORC reserve estimates in the second quarter

of 2013. There is also a significant opportunity to

further increase resources through drilling of pre-

viously unexplored areas.

Altura Mining’s Delta coal project is in East Kalimantan, close to transport routes.

20 l Coal Age Indonesia l April 2013

MICROMINE assists Indonesian coal operationsWITH a history dating back more

than 27 years, MICROMINE has a

strong connection to the coal indus-

try. Through provision of its software

solutions and services, MICRO -

MINE has assisted coal operations

throughout Indonesia operate more

efficiently and profitably.

Released at MINExpo in Las

Vegas last September, Coal Measure

is a dynamic and integrated software

solution for coal data management

and coal data processing with 3D

seam modelling, resource categoriza-

tion, resource reporting, pit optimiza-

tion, pit design and scheduling.

Designed for clients demanding a

software application that could be uti-

lized for coal exploration and mining

operations, Coal Measure’s strengths

ultimately lie in driving cost reduc-

tions, improving planning and

increasing operational efficiencies.

Coal Measure has been developed

to cater to the geological and mining elements of

a project. The solution is coal industry specific,

including its features, functions and terminology.

It contains elements of MICROMINE’s data

management solution Geobank, and the compa-

ny’s flagship exploration and mine design solu-

tion, Micromine.

Development of the solution was done taking

into account the needs of both MICROMINE’s

existing coal clients and leading industry con-

sultants. Rigorous testing in real-life environ-

ments is part of the MICROMINE product deliv-

ery process, which ensures the software meets

the requirements of the market.

MICROMINE’s CEO Kevin Fitzpatrick says,

“With coal becoming an increasingly critical

energy source, our clients have been demanding

a more sophisticated solution that takes into

account the complexities of coal and the ways in

which it is mined. It has become very clear to us

that we needed to develop a world-class solution

that was both sophisticated enough to take into

account these complexities, whilst also ensuring

it remained both user-friendly and was easily

transferable.”

In terms of functionality, Coal Measure’s

approach to coal deposits is vastly different to

that for metalliferous and irregular deposits. For

coal, interpretation and wireframing are replaced

by modelling seam morphology using griddling

based on stratigraphic sequence, followed by

direct conversion into a seam block model.

Coal Measure has been developed to ensure

that modelling coal projects can be executed

quickly due to seamless processes, from strati-

graphic hierarchy compilation, through to grid-

ding and seam block model generation.

MICROMINE invests 25% of its software

revenue into research and development, ensuring

its technology continues to lead the industry.

Future product development plans for Coal

Measure include the development of modules for

Coal Bed Methane and Coal Seam Gas.

Coal Industry

Standards Committee

As part of MICROMINE’s commitment to

positioning itself at the forefront of technological

and industry developments, the company

involves itself with key industry groups and affil-

iations. The Australian Coal Industry recently

released ‘CoalLog’ Version 1, an Australian

borehole data logging standard which was ini-

tially developed by senior GeoCheck staff

Andries Pretorius, Gary Ballantine and Brett

Larkin, followed by collaboration with major

mining and software companies.

MICROMINE’s senior Geobank data man-

agement specialist Ibo Mango is a member of the

collaborative panel responsible for the release of

CoalLog. Early involvement in this project, the

ACARP Project C21003, has enabled

MICROMINE to invest considerable time help-

ing develop a solution that will benefit the coal

sector and the company’s coal clients.

Ibo Mango says, “My involvement with the

panel has been important to me as it is clear that

the standard will benefit the industry. For many

years coal related data consultancy has been

dependent on many variable factors. Depending

on the data format and dictionaries used, my

findings have varied considerably from company

to company.

“The best part about CoalLog is the benefits it

will provide MICROMINE’s clients. A univer-

sally consistent system will be more transferable

within the industry and will allow operations to

record and manage higher quality and more

accurate borehole data. MICROMINE is excited

to be part of this new data standardisation

improvement and being in a position to introduce

the new standard within clients’ operations,” he

concludes.

Micromine Consulting

Services

In addition to offering software solutions to

the coal industry, Micromine’s Consulting

Services group (MCS) has provided consulting

services to a number of Indonesian coal clients,

including PT Timah, Altura and PT Asari. MCS

is in the unique position of having recognized in-

house experts in the area of coal mining and

geology. And, through the provision of premium

services, has built a reputation as a leading con-

sulting authority within the coal sector.

MCS delivers its services through a highly

professional and experienced team of geologists,

mine engineers, surveyors and GIS specialists

who have the proven expertise to help clients

achieve their objectives.

Mongolian coal producer Sharyn Gol recently

commissioned MCS to complete a technical

report compliant with JORC guidelines for its

coal mine north of Ulaanbaatar. The estimate

provided by MCS quadrupled Sharyn Gol Coal

project’s resource inventory. The report’s find-

ings enhanced the company’s competitiveness

within the domestic and international coal mar-

kets, resulted in further developments of the

mine, and increased the potential for greater

profits and shareholder return.

tributor of Caterpillar heavy equipment, and runs its coal mining business

through subsidiary PT Reswara Minergi Hartama, which has a concession

in South Kalimantan held in turn by its subsidiary PT Tunas Inti Abadi, and

in Aceh held by yet another subsidiary, PT Media Djaya Bersama.

PHI Group acquires Tambang SekarsaPHI Group has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 70% of equity

ownership in PT Tambang Sekarsa Adadaya (TSA) for $10.5 million cash

and stock. PT TSA owns a 9690-hectare coal concession with 71 million

tonnes of measured coal resources and 205 million tonnes of indicated

resources in West Sulawesi. The agreement will see PHI pay a total of $5.25

million in PHI Group common stock and $5.25 million in cash to TSA.

therefore, a strategic tool which can help create a

more intelligent mining sector in Indonesia. It

allows direct communication for interested par-

ties and provides a quick reference point for

newcomers wishing to identify resources.

The directory is aimed at individuals or com-

panies seeking specific resources within

Indonesia, wherever they may be wanted. It is a

perfect example of just how important the min-

ing sector is to Indonesia and shows that it is

much more than just exploration and mining at

various sites.

Jakarta office extends

Jamieson Group outreach

Jamieson Group memperluas

jangkauan dengan peresmian

kantor baru di JakartaGLOBAL business consultancy Jamieson Group has opened a new

office in Jakarta headed up by the group’s vice president - operational

support and analysis, Marty McKowen. Jamieson Group is a leading

global provider of performance improvement and transformation solu-

tions within the resource industry.

Founded by David Jamieson 17 years ago, the company’s head

office is in Australia. Jamieson Group has a team of experienced con-

sultants across all corners of the globe to provide innovative, hands-on,

practical consulting. The group boasts a successful track record in

assisting clients with productivity improvement, business process

engineering, project management, and attitudinal and behavioural

change through coaching and training.

Notable highlights for the Jamieson Group include a 23% increase

in mine output for an open cut mine, a greater than 30% increase in

coal production for a contract mining client and a reduction in gold

production costs of 10% for another client.

Marty McKowen brings to the role 16 years in consulting and

around 13 years in Indonesia. Previous management roles have been

with Leighton Contractors Indonesia and with Barrick Gold

Corporation.

He has shown an emphasis on achieving successful outcomes by

ensuring that the people have the right systems and skills to be able to

do their job.

Marty McKowen says, “Jamieson provides a range of support to the

industry. At the moment we are providing supervisor training and

coaching to a major mining company and we are also in conversations

with two concession owners in Indonesia and Malaysia to provide the

project management support to develop and run their mines.

“I’m looking forward to reinforcing our commitment to Indonesia

by establishing a local base camp. We aim to partner with the growing

mining industry and share our expertise, with the ability to offer

Indonesian specific approaches in terms of training and coaching with

an end result of improving viability and maximizing value for all

clients and their stakeholders,” he says.

The group opened a preliminary office in Jakarta in 2000 with all

activity streamlined via the head office during the global financial cri-

sis under the shelter of Australia’s strong economy.

“Due to our organization’s continued growth, in particular strong

industry partnerships and demand within Indonesia, the time is right to

re-establish our local presence,” says Marty McKowen.

KONSULTAN Bisnis Internasional, Jamieson Group.

tu kliennya meningkatan produktivitas tambang, Pengolahan teknis,

naan dan pelatihan.

Salah satu Kesuksesan Jamieson Group adalah menghasilkan 23 persen

bergabung bersama PT Leighton Contractors Indonesia dan Barrick Gold

Corporation.

Marty mengatakan, "Jamieson Group menyediakan berbagai macam

Weir Minerals are there, every step of the wayWEIR Minerals are specialists in delivering and supporting mill circuit

solutions including pumps, hydrocyclones, valves, hose, screens and

screen media, cone crushers, rubber, wear resistant linings, mill systems

and mine dewatering solutions for global mining and mineral processing

and general industry.

Weir’s product strength lies in the excellence of its hydraulic designs

and wear, corrosion and abrasion resistant materials. In slurry pumping,

processing and control applications where the cost of ownership often

outweighs capital cost as a priority, Weir helps its customers address such

issues as longevity, capacity, efficiency of operation, and maintenance.

With more than 500 expert staff in more than 20 locations in the Asia

Pacific region, including Balikpapan, Indonesia, Weir is there for you and

your operation, every step of the way.

An example from mine dewatering specialist Weir Minerals Multiflo

(WMM) is the Hydrau-Flo valve system. Manufactured in Australia and

in use since 1997, Hydrau-Flo fuel filling valves are used globally by

many of the biggest names in construction and mining. The patented

Hydrau-Flo system is based on a sound mechanical principle – spring-

opposed hydraulic pressure that delivers a clean, fast and safe solution to

organizations that transfer liquid as part of their operation.

WMM says Hydrau-Flo valves achieve extremely fast refuelling times

by delivering up to 1000 litres per minute into alloy, plastic or steel fuel

tanks and where the operation is already utilizing fast fill, the Hydrau-Flo

system maintains tank integrity by ensuring the tank is not pressurized

during or following the refuelling process.

With Hydrau-Flo safety valves, the risk of overfilling, spillage and

diesel tank rupture is a thing of the past; so too risks associated with envi-

ronmental hazards and operator safety. These improvements have been

achieved without the need for electronics or complex arrangements prone

to blockage and failure. The Hydrau-Flo system incorporates robust fuel

THE Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) mine at

Sangatta is an 11-pit operation - so large that

it takes an hour just to travel from one side

of the property to the other. To meet the

monthly production goal of 3.3 million

tonnes, KPC contracted the drilling services

of Pama and Thiess. PT Atlas Copco

Nusantara’s satellite branch at Sangatta is a

complete partner with all three operating

companies, offering drill rig support and a

variety of service-related items.

The Sangatta service branch is like an ant

hill of activity. Although 90% of its work is

done outside the shop, service vehicles and

people move in and out of the property in a

continuous flow. Service operations are

active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365

days a year, with 75 people manning the

office, customer shops, pits or the many fuel

depots and transfer locations.

The branch provides fire suppression sys-

tem installation, hose and fittings, lubrication

systems and consumable parts. It also services

and supports what could be seen as the largest

fuel management system in the world.

At KPC’s Sangatta mine 280 million

tonnes of overburden and 40 million tonnes

of coal are shifted annually, and that requires

a very large fleet. Atlas Copco’s technical

advisor Raymond Daniels says, “Every big

truck brand and large digger you can think

of is operating at KPC.”

KPC operates 30 of the largest diggers

made. For digger efficiency and to support

the optimal 12-metre bench height, 300-ton

trucks are the most efficient, and there are more

than 500 in operation. Add the truck fleets and

there are 800 trucks operating at KPC Sangatta

Mine. Combined, the vehicles consume more

than a million litres of fuel a week. Atlas Copco,

an authorized Banlaw dealer, manages the

sophisticated electronic fuel tracking system.

PT Atlas Copco Nusantara’s responsibility

doesn’t end with fuel systems. It’s also charged

with the installation and maintenance of auto

lubrication, fire suppression systems and over-

all fluid maintenance onsite.

Each pit presents variations in formation with

depths ranging from 40 to 70 metres of overbur-

den over the coal seam not lower than 120

metres below sea level. Marradian Dwi is

drill and blast manager for Thiess’ mining

operations and says two pits can be totally

different with up to 8 layers of coal in 5 to

30 metre seams at varying depths with 40 to

70 metres of overburden between layers.

One pit has a flat layer of coal 10 metres

thick with the bottom lying 120 metres

below sea level.

Due to the formation variations there is no

perfect bit but they’ve found the Atlas

Copco Secoroc EH42CAH 7 ⅞-inch bit and

Teamalloy 6.25 drill pipe to be the best for

the formation overall. They average 8000 to

11,000 metres per bit. Because Thiess is

paid by tonnage of overburden, it’s neces-

sary to have their operational equipment all

the time.

“We expect 98% utilization from our drill

rigs,” says Marradian Dwi. Their need for

dependable equipment brought them to PT

Atlas Copco Nusantara. In total they operate

seven drills. They use Atlas Copco’s DM45

SP and DML SP drill rigs for most drilling,

but they also have a multi-pass DM45. Each

drill averages 80 metres per hour, and each

is expected to drill 50,000 metres per month.

Marradian Dwi says, “For me, our deci-

sion to use Atlas Copco comes down to less

maintenance required and greater availabili-

ty. That means greater operational availabil-

ity and greater parts availability.” As they

move forward he said he would also like to

utilize more training services. “My drillers

know how to drill but I want to make them bet-

ter and standardize best practices.”

Collaboration is proving the key to success at

Sangatta. By customizing its service offerings

to fit the needs of all operating companies, PT

Atlas Copco Nusantara is demonstrating how it

can be part of the large-scale operation’s win-

ning strategy.

JESS Kindler has accepted the position of

director for PT Atlas Copco Nusantara. Since

June 2010, he worked as business line manager

for the company’s Mining and Rock Excavation

Service division in the United States.

He originally joined Atlas Copco in 2005 as

product line manager for Atlas Copco Drilling

Solutions and in 2007 became Intermountain

regional manager.

Jess Kindler graduated with highest honours

and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in

mining engineering from the Colorado School

of Mines in the US in 1998. He served as a

Captain in the US Army Corps of Engineers

until 2002, completing both Ranger and

Airborne training.

He then joined Ingersoll-Rand as worldwide

service manager for Drilling Solutions and later

ran the DM30/DM45/DML manufacturing

workshop.

He worked at two underground mines as an

engineer and supervisor for UNOCAL and

Vulcan Materials, and in 2012 earned an MBA

degree from The Wharton School, where he

achieved the class leadership award.

“Jess’s track record of successful business

development and as a leader gives him a very

good platform for this new assignment,” says

Mining and Rock Excavation Service division

president Andreas Malmberg.

WHITTLE Consulting, which provides strate-

gic planning services for mining companies,

has announced a significant upgrade to its in-

house Prober software. The company says that

the new software can increase mining NPV by

5% to 35%, or substantially more.

After more than 3 years of development, pro-

totyping and testing, Whittle says Prober C

enables intricate modelling of multiple steps in

the mining value chain, bringing technologies

such as mine-to-mill, selective blasting, ore

sorting, and complex comminution strategies

into the strategic planning process.

“New technologies in ore characterization

and extraction processes enable substantial eco-

nomic and energy saving opportunities,”

explains Whittle Consulting CEO Gerald

Whittle.

“Developments in these areas, led by our

alliance partner JKTech, have clear operational

benefits, and now we can harness their strategic

significance by re-optimizing the pits/phases or

underground mines, mining methods, life-of-

mine schedules, cut-off grade and stockpiling

strategies, processing policies, product strate-

gies, logistics and capital scaling decisions to

apply these technologies in an integrated fash-

ion. This will compound economic perform-

ance and capital efficiency to new levels,”

Gerald Whittle says.

For the last decade, Whittle Consulting has

helped mining companies substantially improve

the cash flow profiles of their mining projects

and operations through an integrated approach

‘Enterprise Optimization’. In many cases net

cash flow is doubled in the first 3 to 5 years,

usually with little or no capital expenditure

involved.

As the trends continue towards lower grade

and problematic ore bodies, escalating costs,

scarce capital and diminishing margins, it says

the Enterprise Optimization capability will help

progressive mining companies lead the way in

terms of competitiveness and sustainability.

Enterprise Optimization, often nicknamed

the ‘Money Mining’ approach, is underpinned

by Prober software developed by Jeff Whittle,

founder of the Whittle business and the devel-

oper of the original Whittle Pit Optimization

software that has become the industry standard

for mine planning over the last three decades.

Jeff Whittle, now 83-years-old, explains,

“We have been using the previous version

Prober B for more than a decade. It allows for

three steps in the value chain: mining, process-

ing and production, although with some clever

but convoluted modelling more could be

accommodated.

“The new Prober C supports unlimited

sequential or parallel procedures, making more

detailed yet more intuitive modelling of com-

plex mining and processing technologies possi-

ble. This is then simultaneously optimized to

maximize the value of the business,” he adds.

Whittle Consulting works with alliance part-

ners Ausenco, Gemcom/Geovia, JKTech,

Xstract, VBKom, MineQuest and Edison

Research to deliver the Enterprise Optimization

services worldwide.

Fluid couplings avoid AFC downtimeTHE Jin Cheng Coal Group, one of the biggest

coal groups in China, found a way to avoid

unexpected downtimes of the AFCs (armored

face conveyor) and to raise the productivity of

the Chang Ping Coal Mine. In the past, the

underground mine was facing a lot of problems

because of their AFC drives equipped with two

two-speed motors but then the head of Jin

Cheng decided to replace the two-speed motors

with Voith Fluid Couplings (type 562 DTP-

KWL2), in order to prevent chain breaks as well

as gearbox and motor break downs in the future.

The couplings provide a lot of benefits for

AFC drives. “Based on the hydrodynamic prin-

ciple, the fluid couplings protect the whole

drive train from overload situations, which

often happen at Chang Ping Coal Mine”, head

of the Mechanical and Electrical Department of

Chang Ping Coal Mine, Mao Weihong says.

“The 562 DTPKWL2-1000 couplings are so

powerful that they can easily handle blockages

of the AFC without downtime or damage of the

equipment.”

Mao Weihong says he is very satisfied with

the exchange of the equipment. Furthermore, he

compliments the reliability of the couplings and

especially their soft start function. “For upcom-

ing mining projects, we will also rely on Voith

Fluid Couplings to raise our productivity.”

Since installation of the couplings in 2009,

the AFC experienced no chain breaks, which

also means significantly reduced maintenance

efforts. Nowadays, the 225 metre wide and

1000 metre long coal panels produce an annual

output of 3 million tonnes in the Chang Ping

mine and the situation of the coal mine has,

therefore, greatly improved.

Located near Jin Cheng City, Chang Ping

Coal Mine employs more than 6000 people and

produces 6 million tonnes of coal each year.

Voith Turbo, the specialist for hydrodynamic

drive, coupling and braking systems for road,

rail and industrial applications, as well as for

ship propulsion systems, is a group division of

Voith GmbH. Voith sets standards in the mar-

kets of energy, oil & gas, paper, raw materials

and transportation & automotive. Founded in

1867, Voith employs more than 42,000 people,

generates 5.7 billion Euro in sales, operates in

more than 50 countries around the world and is

today one of the biggest family-owned compa-

nies in Europe.

Fluid couplings enable less downtimes and increased productivity at the AFC.

TECHNOLOGY developed by an Australian

company is behind a major coal upgrading

milestone announced for New Zealand’s coal

energy sector. South Australian-based GTL

Energy and New Zealand Government-owned

Solid Energy New Zealand jointly announced

they had achieved sustained production runs at

New Zealand’s first commercial coal upgrading

plant utilizing GTL Energy’s coal upgrading

technology.

The companies have signed an agreement for

the formation of a joint venture company,

GTLE Development Ltd, to focus on the opera-

tion of the plant, further project development

and deployment of the technology globally.

Solid Energy is commissioning its Mataura bri-

quette plant in Southland, which will produce

lignite briquettes for New Zealand’s South

Island energy market using GTL Energy’s tech-

nology.

The technology involves converting low-

grade coal into higher-rank fuel by the removal

of moisture from the coal and converting it into

briquettes which feature higher energy content,

reduced emissions, improved handling and

transportation characteristics and increased

market value.

Once fully commissioned, the Mataura plant

will be operated by GTLE Development

through a wholly-owned New Zealand sub-

sidiary to annually produce up to 90,000 tonnes

of low-moisture and higher-energy briquettes

from about 150,000 tonnes of lignite.

The joint-venture company will manage bri-

quette production at the Mataura plant, trial the

product in international thermal export coal

markets and focus on developing and deploying

the upgrading technology globally. Solid

Energy will have a 20% stake in GTLE and will

continue to own the Mataura plant.

Feedstock for the plant will come from Solid

Energy’s nearby New Vale Mine and will be

transformed into a high energy product for the

joint venture under a tolling arrangement which

underpins continuous production.

This product will support the domestic mar-

ket development along with proof of technolo-

gy for global deployment. Solid Energy will

market the product to its South Island cus-

tomers with trials due to begin shortly.

Solid Energy and GTLE are in consultation

with staff at the plant about transferring their

employment to the GTLE New Zealand sub-

sidiary. In addition to the Mataura plant and its

United States commercial demonstration plant

in North Dakota, GTLE has plant projects

under various stages of development in

Indonesia and Australia, and opportunities

under review in the USA and Europe.

Solid Energy’s group manager coal develop-

ments Brett Gamble says, “We have worked

closely with GTL Energy over many years, and

the opportunity to combine our collective

expertise and assets to accelerate commercial-

ization and deployment of the technology

makes a lot of sense for both of us. We are

excited about the future of this proposed ven-

ture and believe the transformation of low rank

high moisture coal into higher energy briquettes

has potential to create significant value.”

GTL Energy’s CEO Fred Schulte, who will

also be CEO of GTLE, says, “This deal will

create a company with the ability to accelerate

technology deployment. The achievement of

continuous, safe and reliable production at the

New Zealand plant will provide the demonstra-

tion that is expected to support more wide-

spread adoption. We will now have a produc-

tion facility, engineering and operating capabil-

ities in a single organization. The new entity

will be looking beyond a technology licensing

business model and moving into project devel-

opment, ownership and operations. Despite

challenging coal and capital markets, we have

exciting projects which make sense regardless

of market timing, and we look forward to bring-

ing these into fruition through 2013.”

Australian mining expertise on show at ozmineAUSTRALIA’S world-leading mining expertise

will be on show at ozmine2013 in Jakarta on

April 16 and 17 at the Shangri-La Hotel. Ozmine

is Australia’s premier mining event in South East

Asia and consists of a conference, exhibition and

ample networking opportunities.

The ozmine2013 conference with the theme

‘Australia and ASEAN: Partnering for Perfor m -

ance’ brings together key Indonesian, Australian

and ASEAN industry and government players to

identify and analyse trends, opportunities and

challenges in mining. The two-day exhibition is

where you can meet Australian companies offer-

ing innovative, competitive and high quality

products and services for the mining and METS

sectors.

Australia’s Trade Commissioner in Jakarta
