What is Adapting Instructional Materials?

▪ The “adoption” of instructional materials is a PROCESS that occurs at the state and/or local level of education. During this process, print and digital materials are reviewed and approved for use in elementary and secondary public schools by the board of education.

Standards/Criteria/GuidelinesIn Adapting Instructional Materials

Materials should support the schools and the District’s educational goals and policies, including the advancement of student literacy.

Materials should be selected to support, enrich and extend the school’s curriculum and to encourage informational, educational and recreational reading, viewing and/or listening.

Consideration should be given to DIVERSE userinterests, abilities, backgrounds, cultures, languages, and maturity levels

Materials intended for student use should be appropriate for the subject area for the age social development ability levels special needs and learning styles of students.

Materials should represent various viewpoints on controversial issues so that students learn to explore, analyse and make intelligent judgments.

The value of a work should be examined as a whole

In order to assure quality selection, the following additional factors may be considered, when appropriate:

educational significance and/or contribution to the curriculum; informational or recreational interest reputation and significance of the author, producer, editor

and/or publisher contribution to the variety in viewpoints offered on

controversial issues accuracy and currency of information

Arrangement and organization of the material (for example, glossaries, tables of contents, chapter headings, etc.)

artistic quality, literary style or production values readability levelsquality and variety of formatneed to replace essential/required worn, damaged, or

missing materialsand value commensurate with cost and/or need
