• “Germany” is derived from the Latin word “Germania.”
• The current German state was founded in 1949 in the wake of Germany’s defeat in WWII.
• Germany’s current population is 8 million.

• Bread is the main food at both breakfast and dinner.
• Dinner generally consists of bread, sausages or cold cuts, cheese, and vegetable garnish.
• Lunch around noon is the usual warm meal of the day.
• Beer is important in German cuisine and is served with many meals.

Oktoberfest• 16-day festival held in

• Began when King Ludwig married Princess Theresa in 1810. They invited all the citizens of Munich to join the celebration outside the city gates.
