THIS SEASON IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF R. JOSEPH SCOTT
R. Joseph Scott possessed a great gift for growing and maturing small community orchestras. He succeeded with his “baby,” the Bellevue Philharmonic, and then again with the Sammamish Symphony, which began life in a recreation room at Providence Point. Joseph’s passion for music brought out the best in his musicians. His endless drive, vision and hard work created an ensemble that the city of Sammamish is proud to call its own. We move into the future with loyal personnel and a solid foundation which includes the fine music library that Joseph
generously bequeathed to the Symphony. Under the direction of consummately skilled Adam Stern, we have the opportunity to truly blossom.
Thank you, Joseph! You will always be in our hearts.

TO OUR FRIENDS AND FANS,
In honor of our beloved Maestro R. Joseph Scott’s tremendous achievements, and his ceaseless love and devotion to the orchestra and the community, the SSO players, board and I gratefully dedicate this, our 25th Season, to Joseph’s memory. Nothing would have pleased him more than to know that the standards he set in terms of excellent repertoire and musicianship are being upheld and perpetuated by the musicians to whom he gave his entire self without reservation. Requiescat in pace, Maestro.

ADAM STERN, Music Director and Conductor of the Sammamish Symphony, is one of the region’s busiest musicians. Since arriving in Seattle in 1992, he has been active as a conductor, composer, pianist, educator and lecturer. He has been leading the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra since 2003, during which tenure he has brought numerous world, U.S., West Coast and Northwest premieres to the Puget Sound community. Stern’s unique programming combines beloved masterworks with must-hear rarities; his programs are not merely concerts, but true musical events.
Stern was born in Hollywood in 1955. He began his musical studies at age five as a piano student, and began flute lessons two years later. At 15, Stern was accepted at California Institute of the Arts, where he initially majored in flute performance, but changed his major to conducting in his second year at the urging of the late Gerhard Samuel, a noted conductor and educator. Stern was graduated in 1977 with an MFA in conducting at 21, the youngest Masters degree recipient in CalArts’ history.
From 1996 until 2001, Stern was the Associate Conductor of the Seattle Symphony (after having served as Assistant Conductor from 1992-96). He led numerous concerts in all of the orchestra’s series, including the orchestra’s first performances of Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 3 and Elgar’s Symphony No. 2. In addition, he led many “pops” concerts and was the happy collaborator of such artists as James Taylor, Art Garfunkel, Judy Collins and Frank Sinatra, Jr.
Stern resides in Seattle with his wife, soprano Kamila Stern, and his children Ella and Oscar.

FRANZ PETER SCHUBERTSymphony No. 8 in b, D. 759, “Unfinished”
Franz Peter Schubert was born on January 31, 1797 in Himmelpfortgrund, a suburb of Vienna, Austria. He died on November 19, 1828 in Vienna. Schubert composed the two movements that comprise the Symphony No. 8 in 1822. The first performance was on December 17, 1865, under the direction of Johann von Herbeck.
The Symphony No. 8 is scored for pairs of woodwinds, horns and trumpets, three trombones, timpani and strings.
BENJAMIN LEESThe Trumpet of the Swan (text by E. B. White)
Benjamin Lees was born in Harbin, China on January 8, 1924, to Russian-Jewish parents; the family came to the United States to live in 1925. He died in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York on May 30, 2010. The Trumpet of the Swan received its world premiere by the Philadelphia Orchestra on May 12, 1972. William Smith conducted, and the narrator was Bruce Montgomery.
In addition to the narrator, The Trumpet of the Swan calls for two flutes (one doubling piccolo), two oboes (one doubling English horn), pairs of clarinets and bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani and percussion, and strings.
JEAN SIBELIUSKarelia Suite, Op. 11Spring Song, Op. 16Finlandia, Op. 26
Jean Sibelius was born on December 8, 1865 in Hämeenlinna, Finland, and died at his home, “Ainola” (named for his wife Aino), near Lake Tuusula in Finland, on September 20, 1957. On November 13, 1893, Sibelius conducted the first performance of the eleven tableaux entitled “Karelia Music” in Helsinki; ten days later he led a performance of the three tableaux now known as the Karelia Suite. Sibelius also led the premiere of Spring Song (subtitled “The Sadness of Spring”) in Vaasa on June 21, 1894. The composer’s longtime friend and colleague Robert Kajanus conducted the first performance of Finlandia in Helsinki on July 2, 1900.
The three works are similarly orchestrated. All call for woodwinds in pairs (flutes doubling on piccolos), four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion and strings. The Karelia Suite requires an additional piccolo and English horn.
