Selected Works 2014 - 2015

Architecture is the combination and collaboration of many different aspects to produce a final form. Each component of the design layers upon one other, not necessarily in order, but rather in an intertwining amalgum. Yet all designs stem from the core ideals from the earliest pieces of architecture. Projects must first and foremost be able to withstand external forces and they must be able to shelter or accommodate humanity.

With these two considerations in mind, it is evident that structure is the underlying foundation that architecture must adhere to. Without it, buildings fail and are nothing more than paper facades. Structure can either be showcased as witnessed in the John Hancock Center in Chicago or a masked wonderment like the Ginza International Forum in Tokyo. My own concepts therefore, strive to create the backbone of a design in which the overall concept is clarified by having a solid foundation.

With factors like high crime and school dropout rates affecting the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, the studio’s focus was to create alternative higher education institutions that addressed a holistic approach to learning. Howard Gardner’s 9 Types of Intelligence was the basis for all of the projects with our particular building tackling the Mathematical/Logical form of intelligence. The overall exercise asked us to develop a prototype educational system, design a building that reflected the program, and to connect the project with the local community as well as three other nearby institutions being designed by other groups.

SiteOne of the big challenges for our site was how to connect four different properties that are split in half by one of the busiest streets in Chicago, Broadway. By adding green spaces, slow zones, and shared streets, the studio’s proposal was to make the area more pedestrian while still allowing vehicular access.

Education ModelThe studio required us to develop our own curriculum for our alternative education centers. Our group decided to go with a much more hands on approach to learning. Workshops and labs would replace the majority of traditional classrooms.

The diagram to the left illustrates what a classical linear school would be versus the ideal curriculum. Instead of a stringent list of classes, students would be able to discover new material through ”hackerspaces,” or community-oriented workshops, and learn from each other.

Specific to a logic institution, modern technologies would be most appropriate. Students could explore through the hackerspaces and discover opportunities to solve their own design problems.

Also, another decision we made was to have a commercial and incubator section. Unlike many schools where theory dominates curriculum, the design team added spaces for students to intern in companies or to see if there could be a market for their inventions.

Interior SpacesThe group wanted our education model to be represented within our design and have the design enhance the learning process. We started by dividing the building into the learning/application side and a commercial side.

Much like the weaving in and out of curriculum through different studies, we also wanted to make it possible for students to see what everyone else was doing. By pushing the two functions apart and adding an atrium, users were able to look all throughout the building to discover other students’ work.

The atrium could also be used as a meeting space between the commercial and educational and also benefited the entire school by flooding the deep interior spaces with natural light.

Train NoiseOne situation that needed special attention was the train. At certain points, it passed no more than a few feet from our building. Our solution was to place rooms with no noise requirements near the tracks. This turned out to be workshops with heavy machinery. Also, we created small reveals towards the train-line so passengers can get moments of visibility into the school.

The focus of the studio was to create a wide-span ”Universal Space,” or a generic space that could be multi-purposed. Research was conducted throughout the term on innovative ways to clear long distances.

Using a series of arches on the exterior to hold all the structure, the design is capable of holding a 300 meter span with no interior columns roughly 50 meters above the ground. On top of that, operable solar shading and venting is attached on a series of runners and cables on independent systems. Therefore even on a hot sunny day, the roof can be opened for fresh air while still providing shade.

The project was to create a single-family home in a local developing neighborhood. The lot inevitably assigned was near N. Mohawk St. and W. North Ave. by the R.A.N.C.H. neighborhood of Chicago. With gentrification affecting the area and the expansion of the downtown area northwards, the task was to predict who would most likely be the new users of the home up to twenty years from now and then develop a house for that demographic.

This particular design takes into consideration that the R.A.N.C.H. is projected to be one of the wealthiest in the city. Other single family homes within one city block can sell for over $3 million. Taking this into account, the design makes certain assumptions about potential residents.

SiteOne of the best advantages to the site is the proximity to the brown/purple line train station. Located less than a five minute walk away with a total door-to-door time of under 15 minutes to downtown, the location would be ideal for anyone who worked in the heart of Chicago. On top of that, there is a nearby park, dining options at all pricepoints, and shopping all within a half a mile.



Garden OasisWith many options for urban living, the neighborhood itself is a quieter, more residential area. The decision was made to design a house that functioned like a retreat for someone who worked downtown. The front of the home has large windows although the interior is hidden by louvers. The main space however, is the backyard hidden by being sunken into the ground. Overhanging into a portion of the yard is a sizable living space with double height windows.

Other Works - Sketches

Hand DrawingWith most of architecture moving towards computer drawings, there is still something to be learned from the visceral connection between the hand and pen. Many of my ideas originate from these initial sketches and help me understand spacial relationships.

Snowboard DesignDespite being rarely associated with architecture, many of the same considerations are analyzed in snowboard design. Like a wall section, skis and snowboards must be structurally sound and are layered with many materials including rubber, wood, steel, and plastics. Thicknesses become absolutely critical with the tips reaching as little as 2 millimeters and the details must be thoroughly drawn out and calculated.

The real challenge though, was hailing from the Midwest, not really known for its mountains. Many of the machines and materials that are accessible in places like Denver or San Francisco cannot be found in Chicago. This extended the process since I had to not only design the snowboard itself, but also build the tools, develop a construction sequencing based on available equipment, and work with local manufacturers to develop quality alternatives.

The final product was a working snowboard that I have used on multiple occasions and can be seen below.

SOFA 2014Structural Objects Functional Art and Design (SOFA) is an annual convention held at Navy Pier in Chicago. The studio was invited to present a concept in 2014. While not directly involved in the design process personally, I led a logistics team in balancing the budgets, obtaining materials, and worked with a crew to construct the exhibit in the limited time frame we had without overruns.

The design was a modular system of CNC cut pieces of medium-density fiberboard with slots that were assembled to form chairs. These were arranged in such a way that it formed lounge areas. A small movie projector was added so that any of the 40,000 visitors could have a place to sit down and relax while visiting over 70 galleries and countless other artists. The lighting fixture was a series of hand-folded pieces of paper that illuminated certain spaces.

RenderingsWhile the majority of my renderings focus on architecture, I do explore other topics to work on. Using 3D Studio Max, combined with a plethora of tools, allows me to create fantasy worlds as easy as I could do realistic renderings.

Parametric ModelingInformation driven modeling generates 3D models incredibly quickly with enormous amounts of customization. Design can’t be broken down into just a 3D model but a good exercise at understanding how buildings work is to recreate existing structures with parametric software. The secondary goal was to make these as editable as possible. Using Grasshopper and some Visual Basic, the ability to replicate the schemes that are adjustable becomes incredibly efficient.

These exercises provided the skills necessary to take these concepts to my own designs.
