An old farmer once told Scout Cloud Lee that she was one of the most courageous people he had ever known. As a cancer survivor

and a carrier of the Olympic torch, Lee’s life is an inspiration. She is a keynote speaker, songwriter, reality TV star, and author of 14 books. Lee’s success stems from strong beliefs that come from an inner drive.

“You need to want what you want,” she said. “Believe in yourself and intend well. Hold your focus and stick with it long enough for it to manifest. Follow your passion; it was put there for a purpose.” She shares these virtues with everyone she meets - from fortune 500 companies to her students at East Central University.

Lee expresses her strong passion for today’s youth. This generation has captivated her heart. Before ECU, she taught at Oklahoma State University and the University of Illinois.

A Florida native, Lee received her master’s and doctorate at the University of Georgia. She is currently an adjunct professor at ECU in Ada, Okla. Lee has lived in Oklahoma for 30 years and moved to Ada in August 2008 to assist her 91-year-old mother.

She owns a ranch outside town and enjoys living in the small-town community. She teaches two courses at ECU. Her background as an administrator gave her the opportunity to teach Entrepreneurship and Team Building at the college.

For much of her career, Lee coached Fortune 500 companies. In the process she became affiliated with the Chickasaw Nation and became what she described as “their peak performance coach and team building leader”.

She is the founder of Vision Us Inc. The company uses diverse training methods to teach personal growth and performance improvement. The corporation became an immediate success and presented Lee a new concept called “High Games”. These games are designed to test endurance and build character. Contestants are required to camp for a week while participating in the games. She had no idea that her contest would gain notoriety

and ultimately lead to being invited as a contestant on the most successful reality TV show on CBS.

When “Survivor” aired on television for the first time, corporations from all over the country called Lee, suggesting that she watch the show. After studying “Survivor” for seven seasons, she sent in her application with an optimistic sense that she would excel on the show. She was picked out of 250,000 applicants. Her experience as a coach was evident on the show during the group challenges. Despite her third place finish, she claims her experience on the show was torture. “You had to forage for food,” she said. “We ate roots, leaves, and snails.” Her grit caught the attention from viewers everywhere. She was approached by a stranger at an automobile store. He asked Lee if she was on “Survivor” and she nodded. He told her she had more guts than common sense.

There is no limit to Lee’s determination. She survived the deadly cancer Melanoma. When she received the news that she had two months to live, she was determined to survive. She said she “had to get right with her creator.”

Her next step was to record albums. She describes her genre as “gypsy rock/country funk”. It is similar to Oklahoma’s “red dirt”. She puts emphasis on positive lyrics and upbeat sounds.

Lee had a lifelong dream of running in the Olympics, but a personal setback delayed the run for thirty years. Lee received a certified letter saying that she had been recommended to run in the 2001 Olympic torch relay. She has no idea who made the recommendation. She was one of fifty-two people to run the torch across Oklahoma. After a few decades of adventures and accolades, does Scout Lee have more to do? Her eyes are glazing blue as she tosses her blonde curls, “I think I’m in the prime of my life right now,” she said. “I feel like I’m just getting started.”

“It takes a dang good bull” to keep up in the bull-raising business anymore. With the advent of ever-developing bull-riding organizations like Professional Bull Riders and Championship Bull Riding, a lot has changed since Derrel Hargis started in the business in 1972.

Hargis started riding bulls at the age of fifteen and he has been interested in bucking bulls ever since. “All we ever did was rodeo,” recalled Hargis, “and so we had a lot of bulls out there at the house, and we started leasing them out to various rodeos.”

By the time Hargis graduated from high school, he was so busy hauling bulls to and from rodeos, and leasing them out that he had little time for bull-riding. However, the interest sparked by his love of bull-riding eventually led him to sell his first bucking bull at the age of eighteen.

“That first one was just a stroke of luck,” said Hargis modestly; a stroke of luck that eventually led to a career of

success and accomplishment. Since then, Hargis has built a business with

about 60 cows and anywhere between 100 to 120 bulls at one time. He has also raised several superior bulls including Grasshopper who won Bucking Bull of the Year in the Professional

Rodeo Cowboys Association, Neon Nights who was a PBR finalist,

Strawberry Wine who was Bull of the Finals in PBR, and Blueberry Wine who was a runner-up Bull

of the Finals in PBR twice. While there is an element of luck to raising quality bucking bulls, for the most part it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to raise bulls of this caliber.

“You have to work really hard to keep your breeding program

right up there at the top,” said Hargis. “You have to raise about two

to three superstars per year to keep yourself in business. The PBR keeps

getting bigger and you have to stay with it to raise really good bulls. If you stub your toe one year and raise some sorry ones, it’s not long until you’re out of business because the buyers stop >

calling you in a hurry.” It also takes a lot

of work to insure that absolutely no bad traits are passed on to the next generation of bulls. “You have to be really careful so that you don’t breed faults,” explains Hargis, because it is such a genetic process. “One bull would jump out to the left every time it came out of the gate,” Hargis recalled explaining how much genetics plays a role in breeding. “We bred seventeen bull calves out of him and every single one of them jumped out to the left,” just like their father. This is why it so crucial to find “a perfect bull… No matter how much you may like one, if it has a fault, you can’t breed him.”

All of this dedication and precision eventually pays off when your bull actually does well, but when asked

what his greatest achievement in the business was, Hargis simply replied, “All of the good bulls I count as achievements. There have been some highlights, but it is more about getting your name out there than anything. For example, even though Blueberry Wine never got bull of the year, he got runner-up two times and more people probably know him more than any of the ones that won bull of the year. Bulls like Blueberry Wine are your bread and butter because they keep your name out in front of everybody.”

Now with his “name out in front of everybody,” Hargis’s plans for the future are simple: “Keep trying to raise another good one,” and if the past is any indication of the future, he is sure to raise quite a few good ones in the years to come.

The Day of the PelicanWritten by Katherine Patterson

After drawing a silly picture of her pelican teacher, Meli and her friend receive detention and are forced to stay after school. Meli’s brother Mehmet leaves school before her and never arrives home. In time Mehmet is found and it is learned that he was captured by the Serbian police, beaten and left for dead. The Kosovo Liberation Army found Mehmet and nursed him back to

health. Meli wishes her life would go back to the way it was before the Serbian uprising, but the Lleshi family decides to flee their home and move into a refugee tent city. Finally, the Lleshi family is granted papers to immigrate to America. Sponsorship by an American church provides support and gives Meli’s family a home. When the September 11, 2001 attacks occur, the Lleshi’s and other Muslims in America are treated with increased prejudice. In time Meli and her family are truly at home in their new country.

Katherine Patterson has been honored with many awards for her books for children. She was honored with the Newbery Medal for both Bridge to Terabithia and Jacob Have I Loved. Patterson has a deep commitment to children’s literature and the importance of reading to children.

books of the month

Wife of the GodsWritten by Kwei Quartey

Kwei Quartey’s first novel has been called “crisp and engrossing with a compelling cast of characters inhabiting a world precariously perched between old and new.” Fans of McCall Smith’s mysteries, also set in Africa, along with other mystery readers will be left waiting for another book, which will hopefully return to Ghana.

Wife of the Gods introduces the reader to detective inspector Darko Dawson, a talented detective with issues who lives with his wife and son in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Dawson is sent to the small town of Ketanu to investigate the murder of a young woman who was a promising pre-med student. The local police are eager to solve the case and not receptive to Dawson, the outsider who lacks an understanding of local customs. Dawson has not visited the area, since his mother disappeared after visiting her sister many years ago.
