    Professional Practice Committee

    The Professional Practice Committee(PPC) of the American DiabetesAssociation (ADA) is responsible foroverseeing the Standards of MedicalCare in Diabetes position statement,referred to as the Standards of Care.

    The PPC is a multidisciplinary expertcommittee comprised of physicians,diabetes educators, registereddietitians, and others who haveexpertise in a range of areas,including adult and pediatricendocrinology, epidemiology, publichealth, lipid research, hypertension,and preconception and pregnancycare. Appointment to the PPC isbased on excellence in clinicalpractice and/or research. While theprimary role of the PPC is to reviewand update the Standards of Care, itis also responsible for overseeingthe review and revisions of ADA sposition statements, scienti cstatements, and systematic reviews.

    All members of the PPC are requiredto disclose potential con icts of interest with industry. Thesedisclosures are discussed at the onsetof each Standards of Care revisionmeeting. Members of the committee,their employer, and their disclosedcon icts of interest are listed in the Professional Practice Committee for

    the 2014 Clinical PracticeRecommendations table (see p.S154).

    For the current revision, PPC memberssystematically searched Medline forhuman studies related to eachsubsection and published since 1January 2013. Recommendations(bulleted at the beginning of eachsubsection and also listed in the Executive Summary: Standards of

    Medical Care in Diabetes d 2014

    ) wererevised based on new evidence or,in some cases, to clarify the priorrecommendation or match the strengthof the wording to the strength of theevidence. A table linking the changes inrecommendations to new evidence canbe reviewed at http://professional.diabetes.org/CPR . As for all positionstatements, the Standards of Care werereviewed and approved by the ExecutiveCommittee of ADA s Board of Directors,which includes health care professionals,scientists, and lay people.

    Feedback from the larger clinicalcommunity was valuable for the 2014revision of the Standards of Care.Readers who wish to comment on the Standards of Medical Care inDiabetes d 2014 are invited to do so athttp://professional.diabetes.org/CPR .

    ADA funds development of theStandards of Care and all ADA positionstatements out of its general revenuesand does not use industry support forthese purposes.
