Hulda Pettyjohn Hubbell

Hulda Pettyjohn, born in April, 1843, in Logan, Illinois, was the daughter of Samuel and Abilgail Ferguson Pettyjohn. As a woman, she was five feet six inches tall, about ninety pounds, stern, and straight as a stick. She married James Harvey Hubbell, Febr-µary 1, 1866, in Edgar County, Illinois.

Hulda wrote to Jonathan, her eldest brother, "I was married to a man by the name of Hubbell .... it will be a consolation to know that I married a good husband ... one of which you can be proud to call brother." (The marriage lasted over sixty-five years.) Harvey (as he was called) with his red curly hair, blue eyes and ruddy complexion, had an Irish background. He was born August 5, 1842, in Mount Carmel, Indiana.

It was customary for emigrant trains to hire doctors and sharpshooters in exchange for transportation and food. In 1864, when Harvey was 22 years old, he had just such an understanding with the members of an emigrant train headed for Virginia City, Washington Territory. In exchange for his services as a sharpshooter and scout, his bed and board would be furnished.

After he returned to the Midwest, Harvey began building houses, ·working with concrete and· plaster, and making shakes. How he longed for that beautiful · open country of the Pacific Northwest! Hulda enjoyed listening to his stories. She was lonesome for her family. Her mother, brothers, and sisters had migrated to Washington Territory. Letters from them told about their town. Walla Walla was.the scene of great activity, streets were crowded, merchants were doing a thriving business, and pack trains were moving toward the gol9- fields. The letters told of the fertile valley around Walla Walla, not far from missions, trading posts, and military bases.

Hulda and James Hubbell became the parents of five children, four boys and one girl, all born in Illinois, Albert, born May 14, 1867; Jonathan P. "Dot," born July 24, 1869; Harvey Orian, born May 28, 1872, in Philo, ChampaignmCounty, Illinois; Arthur "Oat," born December 25. 1874;and Ella, born in 1877. The family eventually made the decision to move west. Ella Hubbell wrote, "Mother (Hulda told me the family left Philo, Illinois,

Jonathan Pettyjohn, Hulda's brother, had settled in the Walla Walla area after the gold rush in California. A freighter knew him and took the Hubbell family to Jonathan's home near the Touchet River. Wes Manning, husband of Hulda's sister Sarah Ellen, took the Hubbell family to his place near the home of another of Hulda's brothers, Thomas D. Pettyjohn, not far from Dayton, Washington Territory.

In Hulda's eyes, cleanliness was next to Godliness, and it did not take long for her to get the wash pan out on the back porch and start scrubbing. She said, "It took three washings to see our original color."

Soon after their arrival in the west, Harvey applied to the General Land Office in Walla Walla for land grants which he received.

In 1883, a big event took place, at least for Hulda. The Territorial Legislature amended a section of the law dealing with suffrage and omitted the word "male." The bill passed. For the elections of 1884 and 1886, until the law was overturned by the Territorial Supreme Court, women had full political rights. Hulda wrote, "During· election I walked by the side of my staunch Democratic husband and voted the Republican ticket." This never changed, she remained a R~_publican.

Later, after the childre·n were grown, Harvey and Hulda lived in a house that he built in Spokane, Washington. He passed from this life in 1931, and she in 1932.

When her granddaughter, Rosella Hubbell, was a teenager, Hulda would show her the first edition of the Hubbell book (edited in 1881) and say, "Harvey told me his father told him that King James of England had given them a Grant of land."

Ella Hubbell never married. She lived with her parents in Spokane, Washington, where she was a public stenographer working in hotels where salesmen stayed. Knowing that Rosella and her husband, Roy, had taken commercial classes in high s·chooi, Ella came to see them to see if they could read her shorthand which told stories about tlie family. She died two weeks later.

Albert Victor Hubbell married Dora Lord Davis June 23,

Arthur Owen "Oat" Hubbell, born December 25, 1874, became a barber. His hobby was wood carving and among other articles he made violins from wood imported from Europe. Many of his carvings won prizes at fairs and shows. He was a small, wiry man, about five feet seven inches tall, having his mother's brown eyes and dark brown hair, and a dimple in his chin. He worked on a farm near Starbuck, Washington, for ten years before he was married. Saving his money, except for buying clothes and shoes, he was able to buy an 880 acre ranch nine miles southwest of c4eney, Washington, where he and his wife lived after they were married.

Arthur met one of Rosa Schmidt's twin brothers at barbering school in Spokane. The brother told about his maiden sister back home in Iowa who had a flower collection. Arthur sent her a pressed wild rose. This started their correspondence. It was not long before Arthur went back to Iowa to court her,. barbering in a town near Bonaparte. Because of Rosa's heart

~ ing that spring, she followed. Arthur and Rosa Mildred Schmidt were married in 1907. Both were 31 years old.

Arthur and Rosa became the parents of three daughters, Mary Fara, Sylva Eva, and Rosella. Knowing their third child's arrival was close at hand, Arthur sent to Cheney for the doctor. Having to travel nine miles by horse and buggy over dirt roads, the doctor did not get to the ranch on time. Rosa propped the big medicine/cook book up on her knees, and Arthur, following her instructions, delivered the baby they named Rosella. The date was July 16, 1913.

Arthur could do almost anything, from farming to butchering. When the family lived at Davenport for three years he had a meat market. He thought education was important because he had not had any. His main objective in life was to see his three daughters become teachers like their mother. When the girls were a little older, the family moved to Cheney which had a Normal School for teacher training.

Some of the Pettyjohns came to visit the Hubbell family one Sunday arriving in two cars. That Sunday, Rosella had the most embarrassing moment of her life. Her father introduced her to Jack Pettyjohn, his first cousin. Being thirteen years of age, Rosella hung her head. Arthur said to her, "When I introduce you to someone, look him in the eye and shake his hand." Arthur was stern like his mother but spoke softly.

Arthur had a barber shop in Spokane near where his parents and his sister Ella lived. He took care of his parents during the night as they grew older. Arthur did this for at least eight years, getting home once a week on Saturday night and leaving Sunday evening. He would set up Saturday appointments for his daughter, Rosella, who would ride the bus in from Cheney to work, cutting hair and perhaps doing finger waves.

Ella Hubbell cared .for their parents during the day. Ella never married, telling her fiance she needed to care for her parents as long as they lived. Lo and behold! They both lived to the ripe old age of 89.

Rosa Schmidt Hubbell took in boarders. She was very modern for her day. Before she was married, she had taught on a teacher's certificate back in Iowa. Now that she was in a college town, she wanted to actually graduate from a college. She was old going to school, her children thought, being 54 years of age. There were only two older women attending classes at that time. Rosa was one of them. Rosa would run up to her classes before getting dinner

for the boarders. Rosa and her three daughters all got teaching certificates the same summer. Rosa earned a two year; Fara, a life certificate; Eva, a three year; and Rosella, a three year.

Arthur took care of his whole family. From the barbershop, Arthur furnished money to pay his parents' and his sister Ella's expenses. He brought his brother, Albert, to Spokane from where he was working and got him a job. Arthur gave his brother, Dot, a job building houses in Cheney.

One of his greatest achievements was carving a cane which told about the events in his life. and making two violins. He passed away in May, 1949. One of the violins he had made was played at his funeral. Rosa died in November, 1950.

Mary Fara was a teacher who had been born February 2, 1909, in Cheney. She m~rried Q-eorge J. Heglar, a car sale smart. They had no children. Fa-ra was librarian at Roosevelt School in Spokane for many years and national president of the Women's Relief Corps. (Grand Army of the Repubulic) She passed away in July, 1996, in Spokane.

Sylva Eva was born February 9, 1911, and became a teacher. She married Burton Joseph Carney, June 22, 1935. They had one son, Burton, and two daughters, Carol and Rosemary. They all became teachers. Burton, Jr. married Edith Newman. They have no children. Carol married Rodney Thompson and they are the parents of two children, Lisa.and David. Rosemary married Russell Griggs but they were later divorced. Rosemary and Russell are the parents of a daughter, Rebecca Ruth, who is married to Sal Salvador.

After her husband died, Eva Hubbell Carney moved back to Cheney and resumed her teaching career. Later, she became reading consultant for the Spokane Schools. Eva raised many flowers. Her award winning dahlias were as big as dinner plates. She also did stained glass pictures, the most outstanding being a Madonna four feet high, exhibited several places. Eva died in December of 1996, in Cheney.

Roy Stanley Hansen and Rosella Louise Hubbell were married on June 22, 1935. Roy was born in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada, August 19, 1913. He was of Danish and German descent. He had blue eyes and a light complexion. His father was born in Denmark, had crossed the American plains headed west at the age of five years during the Civil War. Roy's grandmother died near Laramie, Wyoming, on the trek. When Roy was born his father was 56 years old and his mother was 36 years old. _____ ~

Rosella and Roy Hansen became the parents of two children, Peter Owen and Helen Louise "Teri." Peter Owen Hansen was born February 11, 1938. He is a physician (MD) and teaches paramedics. Pete was named as a top ten physician in the USA. He married Karalee Towhee Olson, a nurse. Karalee's birth had occurred September 7, 1939. They had two sons, Erik and Leif, and one daughter, Binget, who is married to Stefan Nilson. Binget and Stefan have one son, Kjell Erik. Stefan is in the construction business and Binget works for the Washington and Alaska Halibut Game Commission. They all live in Alaska. Erik died at the age of 31, with a brain tumor and Leif was killed in an accident while in his 20's. Both sons had been Eagle Scouts.

Helen Louise "Teri" Hansen was born September 5, 1939, and became a teacher like other members of the family. She married George Mortensen Bybee, born January 17, 1939, who also became a teacher. He now has Bybee Construction, building houses, condos and commercial buildings in Colville. Teri and George have a son, Aaron, a truck driver married to Tonya Marie Henjum; and a daughter, Tonja Kashan, who studied fashion design and is married to Scott Brookover. Scott is in construction. Aaron and Tonya Bybee are the parents of Victoria and Veronica. Tonya and Scott Brookover have two sons, Trace and Grant.

When her children were very young, Rosella became severely ill with asthma and her weight went down to seventy-nine pounds, The young mother was taken to Seattle where the best chest specialist in the Northwest was located. With Roy's love, many prayers and care, Rosella went home after six months. She recuperated just as fast as the illness had come.

As their children were growing up, Roy was Cub Master_ and worked with the Scouting program. Rosella was a den mother and years later supervised a teen girls' group. The family had a lake cabin and spent many weekends there, swimming, boating, and eating the many hamburgers Roy barbecued. The kids' teenage friends were always welcome. ·

Roy owned Hansen Hardware in Cheney. Each day Rosella would send Roy off to work with a big hug and kiss, and a "Good luck today." He was on the city council at 24 years of age, police commissioner, and city supervisor for eleven years before he retired. He belonged to the Masonic and Shriner's ~odges, and_ the National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers.

cate from Cheney Normal School, her B.A. from EWCE (now EWU) in the 1960's, and later, a masters from Whitworth College in Spokane. She was a teacher like her mother and many of her cousins and other family members. Getting her mother's long switch out of the old trunk, and winding it into a bun on the back of her head made her look older when she was nineteen years of of age and seeking her first teaching position.

The last ten years of her career, Rosella taught mainly geology to two hundred eighth graders a day, and during the summers teaching geology at Eastern Washington College, Gonzaga University, and Whitworth College. She was awarded National scholarships three different summers. One was to the University of Georgia for studying geology and chemistry, one to Vassar in New York: State for geology, another to Adler Planetarium in Chicago · fcfr .:astronomy. She represented the Northwest Region for Teachers of Science in Boulder, Colorado.

Rosella's most loved hobby has been amateur radio, "Hams" they are called. Talking to every state in the USA, every continent, plus talking to the seven weather stations in Antarctica has been rewarding. In order to become a "Ham" one must pass a Morse Code of thirteen words a minute plus a written test. When she taught sixth graders in Spokane, she would get to school early to teach any student who was interested. FCC officers passed more than fifty. of her students; giving them their general class licenses. Several made ham radios fron1 kits. Roy, Pete, and Teri also got their ham licenses. Roy's call was W7WVA, Pete's KL7GSA, and Teri's W7VWA. Rosella's call was W7ULK. Another ham nicknamed her Ugly Little Kid for the "ULK. 11

Four months out of the winter, Roy and Rosella lived in Palm Springs during their retirement years in their fifth-wheeler. Being an enthusiastic hiker, Rosella climbed many trails including Murray Peak, the highest point around Palm Springs. She ran in Bloomsday twice, at ages 73 and 74. One year she finished just 19 seconds too late for a trophy. Bloomsday is an annual seven and one half mile run each spring in Spokane. As many as fifty-one thousand people have registered for the run.

In December, 1991, Rosella had a stroke, for two months she w_as unable to talk. One finger held up was "yes" and two fingers was "no." She had to learn to talk all over again. Now, she does everything with her left hand and she is not left handed!

Rosella is still interested in rocks. She and Roy used to carry rock hammers in the trunk of their car. Now· Teri takes her to

Today, Ros e lla is alone since Roy died in 1997. They had celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary. They had gone together five years b e fore being married. She lives in a duplex n ear downtown Colville . She has the computer "bu g," spending hours each day writin g stories of h e r life with Roy w ith one finger of her left hand. P ete comes down from Alaska and visits her every two or three months , and T eri, living in Colville, does many things for Rosella.

STAR OF STARBUCK

8 Feb 1908-Miss Mary Hukill returned home Sunday, after a few weeks visit with friends at Walla Walla.

7 Mar 1908-Charles Wellman and Mansfield Rayburn were Walla Walla visitors Tuesday and Wednesday, called as witnesses for Miss Ida Hukill in her homestead proof.

7 Mar 1908-Miss Ida Hukill was in the Garden City this week making final proof on her homestead, 9 miles west of here. Five years ago when she filed on the land it was considered of little value, but today is the

reverse. The land producted better than 30 bushels per acre of first class wheat last year, which before had raised only coyote yells. She is to be congradulated on her success as a wheat rancher. But what her friends deem best, however, is that she will no longer have to spend so many lonesome hours so far from them.

STAR OF STARBUCK

26 Sept 1908-Miss Hukill when asked if her pupils were mischievious enough to be interesting replied. "The pupils are so good that everything is interesting. "

10 Oct 1908-School Items: The boys accidentally broke a pane of glass out of one of the windows in Miss Hukill's room one day this week. The boys were game, however, and had a new glass in the following morning.

31 Oct 1908-Miss Alice Hukill left Saturday for Moscow and other points to visit with friends.

31 Oct 1908-The Misses Hukill have issued invitations for a Hallow'een party. . Judging from the hostesses a jolly time will be had by all those who

accept the hospitality.

7 Nov 1908-The Misses Hukill have issued invitations for a Halloween night.

14 Nov 1908-A. W. Hukill has been confined to his room for the past week, suffering with la grippe.

28 Nov 1908-The Hukill girls and Miss Minnie roust and C.H. Ust were entertained at Manuel Nascimento's Sunday at a big turkey dinner.

5 Dec 1908-Miss Wellman has been refereeing the girl's basketball team during Miss Hukill's absence.

12 Dec 1908-On account of the crowded condition of the room Miss Hukill's pupils are attending school only 112 day. One class going in the forenoon and one in the afternoon. This means a great loss to the scholars and is a financial loss to the district as well in so much as the money appropriated by the state for school purposes is based on the attendance. An addition to the school room is an urgent want. The parents whose children are affected by the new order have vigorously protested against it but so far the board has been unable to solve the difficulty in any more saisfatory manner.

13 Feb 1909-School Notes: Miss Foss and Miss Hukill entertained Miss Miller and the pupils of the high school last Thursday evening. The evening was

pleasant-ly spent in playing games. Dainty refreshments were served.

There are, ho\\"e,·er, se\·eral Yillages \\·hose records, had \\"e space for them, would afford much matter o f interest. The leading one of these is Starbuck. This has become within the last few years a ra il road po int of much importance, being a di\·is ion and locomotive station on the 0. \\. R. & :t\ . System, and, a s the r esult o f this, providing homes for a numbe r o f families and being the center of a \'cry considerable business. It is the junction of the Pomeroy branch with the main line, and as an immense business is done on that branch, there is the prospect of a steady increase in the business centering at Starbuck. The picturesque and pi scatoria l Tucanon, of historic fame, and the drainage stream of one of the richest and most beau tiful valleys in the state, passes right through the town, and its bright \\"aters impart a needed verdure to the rather arid land as well as diffuse a g ra te ful coolness to the sometimes intense heat which lhc low altitude and blu ffy hill shoulders on either side impose upon the place.

Sta rlmck may be said lo h;n·e come into existence \\·ith the construction of the railroad ;ind the erectio n o f a warehouse and section house in 1882.

Tt is re ferred to in the Chro11 iclc o f Dayton in December, 1886, as Starbuck S tation. l\ [ention is made also o f Col. George Hunter as rccei\· ing a t that time the appointment a s rail road agent. Colonel Hunter was noted as a pioneer and was the author of a book on pioneer life, entitled: "Reminiscences of an Old Timer."

Cpon the complet io n o f the P omeroy branch line in 1886 cons iderable building ensued. ?I [cl ntosh 1 :rothers cs tabli~hcd a store, a depot building and several other buildings were put up. Sad to relate these buildings were destroyed by li re the next year. •
