NETHERBECK

Construction Cost: £4m

Role: Technical Drawings Coordinator

Status: under construction

The practice gained planning permission for Netherbeckon the site of a former chicken farm on the edge of theYorkshire Dales National Park. The current clientsbought the site and approached the practice to constructa house on the site.

The house comprises an imposing stone clad cube withfull height glazing down the centre of each façade. In thefront of the building is a parking terrace with the garaginghoused underneath, as well as a swimming pool, acinema, and a gym. There is glazed atrium down thecentre of the building, and the roof supports two arrays ofphotovoltaic collectors, one on each side of the atrium.

The process involved close liaison with the StructuralEngineer, the Landscape Architect, the pool specialist, theinterior designer and the Quantity Surveyor.

I managed the working drawing programme, and with ateam of 4; two Architects, the in house services engineerand an Architectural technician produced the workingplans, details and full services drawings comprising 70drawings.

The working drawings were undertaken in Vectorworks. The CG Images were developed by a specialist CGIcompany using the developed planning drawings.

The building will be under the JCT standard form ofContract with Designer Portion. The work was negotiatedwith a contractor, after a number were approached andinterviewed. Cost savings were then explored andimplemented between the contractor, the quantitysurveyors and the design team.

CLAUGHTON BARN

Construction Cost: £300k

Role: Project Architect

Status: under construction

A year last March the main truss of this 2 storey listedbarn, built around 1600 collapsed, taking the roof downwith it and pushing the walls even further out from plumb. We were called to see whether we could repair it. Thebarn was in a perilous state when we arrived andtemporary works were required to prevent it from fallinginto complete dereliction.

After consultations with English Heritage and theConservation Officer. I gained planning and listedbuilding permission for an unfettered dwelling within thebarn.

The bedrooms are downstairs, in the former cow byre, enabling the first floor to be one open space, exposing theoriginal trusses and purlins. The long walls were shoredup both externally and internally, then taken down wherebowed, and rebuilt with the roof being supported on thescaffolding. The roof was then jacked sideways to beseated on the new wall plates.

The original oak beams were used to support the newfloor, and the walls are plastered with insulating limehemp render, negating the need for a block lining to theinterior, and helping to retain some of the undulations ofthe original walls.Hemp lime plaster used to

THE STOREY CICConstruction Cost: £3.6m

Role: Project Architect

Status: Completed 2007

The Storey CIC was a former Technical college in thecentre of Lancaster.Owned by Lancaster Council, it wassuffering from lack of maintenance, poor internalmodelling and poor services. We worked alongside theCouncil to remodel building into a centre of CreativeIndustries, creating a creative hub within the city. Theproposals comprised:-

Creative work spaces3 gallery spacesRestaurantBarLecture TheatreTourist Information CentreCatering kitchen

The work was funded by a raft of grant making bodies, including The Arts Council all of which had differentfunding criteria, timescales for releasing funds andconditions for releasing them.

Our proposals were:-

•To place a heart into the building. Before theremodelling there was nowhere in the entrance of thebuilding that made you feel welcome. By covering overthe central courtyard and placing the bar there, thebuilding now has a set of spaces which are welcomingand pleasant to be in.

• To formulate a services strategy for the building whichwas reversible, accessible and future proofed. With sucha diverse range of uses within a listed building building, there was a need to define at an early stage the servicerequirements of each space and to define the serviceruns. These form an integral part of the design - servicescan be seen weaving in and out of the walls, above andaround you, without being too obtrusive or obvious.

The work was undertaken using an EEC partneringcontract. Buro Happold were the structural and servicesengineers and throughout the project there was liaisonwith a wide range of consultants, stakeholders. Iundertook the project from inception tocompletion, working with one technician.
