3. Select Audacity and select ‘Microphone’ as the audio input source. Adjust the recording volume if necessary.

5. Click the ‘Record’ button to start recording. Speak into the microphone and your voice will be recorded in digital format. The red bars on the top right hand corner represent the volume.

6. Play the recording by clicking the ‘Play’ button .

7. Note the audio attributes (e.g. sampling rate, number of channels) of the recording are listed on the left of the audio tracks.

8. If you find the recording volume too small, you do not need to do the whole recording again. Select ‘Edit’ → ‘Select’ → ‘All’ to select the whole track. Select ‘Effect’ → ‘Amplify’ and adjust the amplification factor (in dB).

9. The following show two recording tracks, one with extremely small volume and one with extremely large volume.

10. Select ‘File’ → ‘Export As WAV’ to save the file in WAV format. The WAV file will be quite large. Every six seconds of recording requires about 1 MB of storage space. Keep this WAV file for Activity 4.
