ACtIvIty desCRIptIon: 1.Set up the markers as for a baseball diamond.

2.Divide the class into two teams: Team A running and Team B handballing.

3.The running team acts as the timer for the handballing team. On the call of “go”, the running team ‘runs the bases’ one at a time in relay fashion. The next runner cannot start until the first runner returns to home base.

4.The handballing team move the ball from player to player (boys must handball to girls and vice versa) counting the number of successful catches until the last runner has finished and yells “stop”.

5.Teams swap roles and the handballing team tries to make more successful passes than the previous team.

p Players should be able to use steroids to help the recover from injury.

p Four field umpires are better than three.

p Girls should not be able to play contact sport.

KEY SKILLS OF THE GAME

KickingKicking is the most important skill in Australian Football. Try to study the kicking style of some of the AFL’s best kicks, such as Jarryd Roughead (shooting for goal), Shannon Hurn (length), Luke Hodge (accuracy) and Lindsay Gilbee (technique).

key poInts1 Line up your body with your target.

Have your head slightly bent over the ball. Hold the ball over the thigh of the kicking leg.

2Guide the ball down with one hand.

3 Point your toes at your target – see the ball hit the foot.

4 Follow through straight towards the target.

These four fundamentals apply to every kick. More information about each type of kick is given in the following pages.

Drop punttHe gRIpThe fingers are spread evenly along each side of the ball, with thumbs extending to the lacing. The grip is the same for both left and right-foot kicks.

tHe ReLeAseThe ball is guided down and kicked on the bottom point, along the lower laces of the boot. It should spin in a backwards end-over-end fashion.

Spin provides distance and accuracy.

HandballIn today’s modern game, handball is a major attacking weapon as players run the ball from defence into attack. It is a skill that needs to be practised regularly and by watching great handball exponents such as Sam Mitchell and Simon Black, you can improve your game.

key poInts 1 The ball must rest on the platform hand

and be hit with a clenched fist. Players should have their eyes on the ball.

2 The punching fist is formed by placing the thumb outside, not inside the fingers.

3The stance is nearly side on to allow the punching arm to swing through freely. Keep knees slightly bent to maintain balance.

4For a right-handed handball, the left foot is forward, and vice versa for a left-handed handball.

5Punching arm is also slightly bent.

6 After contact is made with the ball, the fist remains on the platform hand – “catch the fist”.

MarkingOne of the most spectacular features of Australian Football is marking, particularly the high mark. However, it is just as important to be able to pull in a safe chest mark on a consistent basis without fumbling the ball.

p As with all skills, marking needs to be practised.

p No matter what your size, there will always be a situation in a game where you are in a position to mark the ball.

key poInts 1 Eyes must be focused on the ball all the way from the player’s boot to your hands.

2Position your body in line with the flight of the ball.

3 Move forward to meet the ball; never wait for it to come to you.

4 Skilful players should take the ball in both hands with fingers spread and thumbs close together.

Arm or chest markkey poInts 1Keep your eyes on the ball and line up the body

with the flight of the ball.

2 The fingers and hands are extended – palms up. Tuck the elbows in to the side.

3 The ball is taken on the hands and arms and guided to the chest.

4The ball is hugged tightly to the chest.

5This is an important marking style if the ball is wet or muddy.

Hand markSkilled players should practise taking the ball in the hands at all times, in preference to letting it hit the chest. This will help quick disposal and prevent opponents from punching the ball from behind.

key poInts 1 Eyes must be on the flight of the ball.

2 The fingers should be outstretched, pointing towards the ball. The thumbs are positioned behind the ball.

3The arms must be extended – ‘long arms’.

4 The ball is firmly gripped in the fingers.

5Ensure your body is behind the flight of the ball.

Pick-up: moving ballThere are situations during a game when the ball must be picked up off the ground. Young players need to become competent at meeting and handling a moving ball.

key poInts 1 The body is in line behind the path of the ball in a

semi-crouched position.

2 The arms and hands are extended with the fingers almost touching the ground, palms towards the ball.

3 The ball is picked up cleanly in two hands. The elbows are kept close together.

4 The ball is then brought into the hands for disposal. Keep eyes on the ball at all times.

Pick-up: stationary ballkey poInts one-handed pick-up

1The ball is approached to one side.

2 The player runs slightly past the ball then swings one arm down to scoop under the ball by getting the hand under it.

3 The free arm can be used to steady the ball, once it is picked up.

two-handed pick-up

4The ball is approached from the side.

ostRICH tAgOne child is chosen as “IT”. That child chases other players around trying to tag as many as possible. Tagged players help catch the remaining players, who may stand in a “SAFE” position such as putting their arm under one leg and taking hold of their nose with the other hand.

variation: “SAFE” position may change to bobbing down and holding their ankles.

sCAReCRowOne person is “IT” and when they catch others they become “scarecrows”. The scarecrow is released by a child crawling between his legs. Finish when all competitors are scarecrows. Must be played in small area.

HungRy BIRdsPlayers jog around in a circle. A number of footballs are scattered in the centre. Players must keep away from the footballs. On a signal they run in, pick up a ball and run to the boundary.

dodge And steALMake an area the size of a basketball court. A number of balls are placed behind each base line. Players are in two teams, one in each half of the court. They try to cross their opponent’s base line, take a ball and return to their own half without being tagged.

IsLAnd tAgA number of markers are placed on the ground. Each marker represents an island. A player standing next to a marker cannot be tagged. Several players run between the islands trying to tag players as they run, skip, hop and jump, etc, from island to island. Set a maximum of two-to-three players on an island at any one time.

(EP): Early Primary Motor coordination stage Ages 5 to 8 years

(MP): Middle Primary Basic Skill Stage Ages 9 to 10 years

(AP): Late Primary Advanced, extension and game skill stages Age 11 onwards

Note that many of these games can be modified to make them suitable for levels other than those for which they have been recommended.

For example:

• Substituting tossing for handball

• Modifying the degree of opposition

• Using round balls instead of oval balls

CARRy on (mp/Lp)skills: Tossing, Handball, Catching

Description: The object is to hit the blocks of the opposing team. Players scattered over player area. Game starts when centre player with ball runs towards opponent’s target and, by handpassing the ball, attempts to hit the blocks. Opposition players may tag the ball carrier. Once tagged, ball carrier must stand still and pass the ball to a teammate. Game then continues. If opposing team intercepts the ball, they retain possession and try to hit other team’s target. One point is scored when opponent’s blocks are hit. Team scoring the greater number of points wins. A ball out of bounds is given to the opponent of the player who last touched it. Contact other than a hand tag is penalised by a free throw at the blocks. After a goal is scored, the ball is brought back into play by the opposing team from behind the end line.

Scoring begins when there are three scouts in the opponent’s court. Points are scored for passes received by these scouts. Scouts may pass to each other but these do not score.
