ActiveSmart Wheatbelt Sport and Recreation Directory

Includes Activity Planner

How to use your directory and activity plannerThis directory has something for everyone, including a handy Activity Planner to help you get active in your local community.

A little movement goes along way when it comes to looking after yourself. Go for a walk, get on your bike or use this directory to find an activity that interests you – it only takes a moment to take that first step!

No matter what your age or ability, there’s something for you, whether it’s getting active with your family, joining a sport or recreation club or trying a new activity at your local gym or community centre. So take the time to browse through this directory and find an activity that will suit your lifestyle. Each section provides ways to get active and explore your local community with all the contact details you need to get started.

Once you’ve found an activity that interests you, open up to the Activity Planner and get started on your healthy lifestyle plan!

Still need more information? Visit the activesmart website.

Start planning how you are going to get activeThe ActiveSmart Activity Planner is designed to help you set goals, keep track of your progress and of course, celebrate your achievements!

IMPORTANT!Before starting, we advise you to visit your doctor, especially if you don’t have a basic level of fitness or if you have a chronic illness. Remember, everyone is here to support you, so letting your doctor know you’re part of the ActiveSmart Wheatbelt program means they can cheer you on too!

Why do I want to get active?

Which ones in this list appeal to you? Feel healthier and stronger. Feel physically and mentally better.

Boost my energy. Sleep better and awaken refreshed and ready for the day. Learn more about my local neighbourhood by getting out and about. Enjoy small doses of exercise most days of the week.. Meet people within my community who have similar interests to me. Be able to do light activities like climbing stairs, housework or gardening, without losing

breath. Keep up with the kids and be active with my family. Discover healthier ways to travel such as walking or riding to get to/from destinations – even

just part of the way. Join a local club or participate in a group activity. Participate in competitive sports and improve my skill level. Set challenges for myself to improve my fitness.

The ActiveSmart Wheatbelt program will help you achieve these goals and become more active in your community.

Top Tip:Talk to housemates, family members, friends, neighbours and co-workers about your goals and look for opportunities to get active together!

Goal setting

1. Visualise a goalVisualise your getting active goal to be something enjoyable, realistic, achievable and meaningful to you.

What can I picture when I visualise myself being active in six months time?

E.g. Walking the dog to the park and back before work during the week.

With this vision in mind, what is my specific goal to achieve in six months time?

E.g. To spend 30 minutes walking around my local neighbourhood, three times per week.

What reward can I set myself to celebrate my efforts once I reach my goal?

E.g. Buy some new exercise clothes.

Page 4: ActiveSmart Wheatbelt Sport and Recreation Directorywo…  · Web view•Zumba/jazz/ballroom dancing •Sport specific training •Tennis (singles) •Triathlon ... Gypsy Caravan

Shawn’s story“I didn’t think goal setting was worthwhile for me, I didn’t really see the point. But it wasn’t until I had to imagine a goal and then put it into words that I realised that I needed to be very specific in what I wanted to achieve.”

Action Planning

2. Identify your first stepsThese are the first, small actions you can make to get on your way to reaching your six month goal.

Your first goal:

What activity will I do? E.g: Walking When will I do this activity? E.g: Sunday 9am How far/how long? E.g: 5 minutes around the block

Your first reward:

How will I reward myself? E.g. Buy myself a health and fitness magazine.

Your reminders:

How will I remind myself to complete my activity? E.g. Put my running shoes by the front door the night before.

Your activity partner:

Who can support me to make sure I stick to my Activity Plan? E.g. Ask Jane to meet me at my front gate at 9am on Sunday.

Your back-up plan:

What challenges may you face and how can you overcome them? E.g. I might have to attend an event Sunday morning – ask Jane to meet me earlier or in the afternoon for a change.

Building Habits

3. Plan AheadYour activity plan can help you to get and stay motivated.

Following these small steps can help you set achievable goals and to stay on track.

Some people find it helpful to keep the same goal until it becomes a habit and then slowly build on their goal by doing things like increasing the frequency, intensity or duration of their activity.

You might like to transfer your goals straight to the Weekly Fridge Planner included in your pack or use the following pages to write your goals, schedule activities and track your progress. Additional pages can be downloaded from the activesmart website.

Page 5: ActiveSmart Wheatbelt Sport and Recreation Directorywo…  · Web view•Zumba/jazz/ballroom dancing •Sport specific training •Tennis (singles) •Triathlon ... Gypsy Caravan

Physical Activity Venues and Programs

Facilities and activities for everyoneThere are a variety of local facilities and activities to help you achieve your goal to get active. You’re sure to find an activity to take part in regardless of your age, fitness or ability. Check out your local park or open play spaces for free places to ride, walk, fly a kite, play football or complete a workout using an app on your smartphone (you can also do this at home!). You can also visit your local recreation centre or gym and find out what programs are on offer that suit you and give them a go.

Doing any physical activity is better than doing none. The best way to start is by doing a small amount and gradually build up to the recommended amount. To help you on your way, the Physical Activity Guidelines are outlined below.

Children and young people

Infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers (0 – 5 years) Infants (birth to one year) should be encouraged from birth to engage in supervised floor-

based play in safe environments. Toddlers (1 – 3 years) and pre-schoolers (3 – 5 years) should be physically active every day

for at least three hours, spread throughout the day.

Children and Young People (5 – 12 and 13 – 18 years) Children and young people aged 5 – 12 and 13 – 18 years should get at least 60 minutes of

medium to high intensity physical activity every day. Physical activity should include a variety of aerobic activities and on at least three days per

week, young people should engage in activities that strengthen their muscles and bones.

Adults Be active on most, but preferably, all days every week.

Page 14: ActiveSmart Wheatbelt Sport and Recreation Directorywo…  · Web view•Zumba/jazz/ballroom dancing •Sport specific training •Tennis (singles) •Triathlon ... Gypsy Caravan

Accumulate 150 to 300 minutes (2 ½ to 5 hours) of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes (1 ¼ to 2 ½ hours) of vigorous intensity physical activity, or the equivalent combination of both activities, each week.

Do muscle strengthening activities on at least two days each week.

Top Tip: Did you know that regular physical activity can improve your quality of life and help reduce depression?

Older adults/seniorsIt’s never too late to become physically active and feel the benefits. Regardless of your age, weight or fitness levels, it’s important to do some form of physical activity every day.

Regular physical activity produces a wide variety of health and wellbeing benefits including:

Maintaining or improving physical function and independent living. Improve social interactions, quality of life, and reduce depression. Build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints, reducing the risk of injuries from falls. Reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type II diabetes and some

cancers.

There are five physical activity recommendations for older adults:

1. Do some form of physical activity, no matter what your age, weight, health issues or ability.2. Be active every day in as many ways as possible, doing a range of physical activities that

incorporate fitness, strength, balance and flexibility.3. Accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most, preferably

all, days.4. If you’ve stopped physical activity, or are trying a new physical activity, start at a level that is

easily manageable and gradually build up the recommended amount, type and frequency of activity.

5. Continue to enjoy a lifetime of vigorous physical activity in a manner suited to your capability, but make sure you adhere to recommended safety procedures and guidelines.

SENIORS EXERGAMING WALooking for a new challenge to try with your friends or grandchildren? Try giving exergaming a go!

This social, gentle, and sometimes competitive program uses the Xbox Kinect game machine to get you up, active and having fun. Challenge your grandkids to a game of bowls or even a bit of white-water rafting. They’ll love spending more time with you!

Join a ClubMake friends, meet people, get active and get involved in your local sporting club.

It’s easy to join a sporting club in your local area either as a participant, volunteer, coach or official. The first step is to decide what type of activity you like or are interested in and find a club close to you. You’ll find all of the contact information below so you can get in touch and join like-minded people in your community. Give them a call or send an email and find out how you can get involved. There are roles to suit all ages and abilities and these clubs will happily welcome new members. If you’ve got skills, experience or enthusiasm they’d like to hear from you.

Engage with your community by volunteering!Volunteering WA (VWA) makes a difference by connecting thousands of volunteers to many sports clubs and community organisations. Its aim is to build strong communities through volunteering.

VWA has opened the new Wheatbelt Volunteer Hub with funding received by the Department of Social Services and in partnership with the Shire of Northam. The Hub operates out of the Northam Recreation Centre and is a referral service for potential volunteers interested in finding out more about what volunteer opportunities are available in their community. This support is provided via one-on-one consultations or you can receive assistance over the phone.

Get in touch now to find out how we can help you become more active in your community! You can reach us at the wheatbelt volunteer WA email.
