The nature, pristine waters and forests of the Kouvola region
offer a fantastic setting for sports and relaxation. Biodiversity is
one of the region’s strengths. From the many different hiking trails,
it’s easy to choose one that will suit your level of fitness and the
time that you have available. You can embark on a nature trail
on foot, on a bike or even in a canoe. There are many great
places to take a break on the canoe trails.
There is a wide range of opportunities for fishing, and southern
Finland’s best river for salmon, the River Kymijoki, flows through
the area. The region also has a large number of lakes and ponds
that have many fish. You can try out many types of fishing from
trolling and spinning to angling, ice fishing and fly fishing.
For horse-lovers, there are a great many stables and Kouvola
also has a trotting track of international standards. The region’s
top-quality golf courses attract golf lovers – both advanced and
beginners.
The Kouvola region offers diverse enjoyment for active people! You can practise many different kinds
of sport either with an instructor or on your own, from canoeing to horse-riding, from golf to cycling and
from downhill skiing to tennis. Exercise brightens up the days of both tourists and local residents alike.
Do you want speed and excitement or new experiences? If so,
Kouvola has a wide range of different possibilities. You can shoot
foaming rapids, climb vertical cliffs or go parachuting. Or are you
longing for the roar of an engine? You can experience fast-paced
thrills and spills either indoors at the Kouvola Formula Center or
outdoors at Kouvola Circuit at Tykkimäki.
It’s not only in summer that the local tourism companies organise
diverse programmes. In winter, such pursuits as snowshoe trekking
and tour skating are available, among others. For ski-lovers, there
are networks of tracks of different lengths that are sign-posted and
well-maintained. For downhill skiers and snowboarders, there are
slopes very near the centre of Kouvola. And, when it’s wet outside,
the delight of sports and exercise can be found indoors. There are
indoor swimming pools, gyms, bowling alleys, courts for racquet
sports and other alternatives for active sportsmen and women.
This brochure contains much information on the alternatives
and it can also be found at:

HIKING AND TREKKINGKouvola is environmentally-friendly and diverse, offering
a variety of forest areas and parks. Land owned by the City
of Kouvola contains a dozen or so conservation areas and
nature and cultural trails, which offer great hiking and trekking
experiences to people of all ages.
Niivermäki Conservation Area is a unique location amidst
a built-up district. Niivermäki Nature Trail starts right outside
the Veturi Shopping Centre. The biodiversity of the area is
embodied in steep ‘rapakivi’ cliffs, ferns that border the stream
and woodland hollows. A description of the nature trail with
maps can be found at www.kouvola.fi/niivermaki.
More detailed route descriptions and maps of all the trails
can be found at the City of Kouvola website:
www.kouvola.fi/luontopolut
Trekking in rugged rocky terrainThe Repovesi area offers more than 40 km of different trails
from easy to difficult. You can begin the hike from one of three
entrances (car parks) to Repovesi National Park. Lapinsalmi and
Tervajärvi are situated in the southern part of the national park,
and Saarijärvi in the northern part.
Thanks to its varied and rugged landscape, Repovesi National
Park is one of the country’s favourite hiking destinations. In 2012,
it was voted Finland’s best hiking destination in terms of family
tourism. There is more information about it at
www.luontoon.fi/repovesi and www.visitrepovesi.fi.
Arboretum Mustila has hiking trails and a nature trail, along
which you can test your own knowledge of plants at question
points. Find out more at www.mustila.fi
In Iitti, the abundance of waterways and extensive areas of forest
create good opportunities for recreation in a natural setting.
You can move about freely in most parts of the forests. Berry-
and mushroom-picking are allowed within the limits of public
rights of access. Nature trails and paths increase the opportunities
for enjoyment in the forests and on the lakes. Available are trails
of different lengths from just a few kilometres to journeys of
almost 100 kilometres. More information:

HIKING AND TREKKING
Kyvi.fiKyvi is short for Kymenlaakson virkistysalueyhdistys ry
(Kymenlaakso Recreation Association). It maintains and develops
the local network for recreation in the province. Recently
renovated destinations for nature tourism include Villa Särkilampi
at Repovesi, Heisanharju and the excursion harbours in the eastern
Gulf of Finland. Come and have active fun in the area!

There are many different routes for lovers of canoeing. Väliväylä
is renowned as an old log-floating route connecting the waterways
of Lake Saimaa and the River Kymijoki. Its chain of narrow lakes
and rivers follow smoothly on from each other. With its nature,
it is rich example of Finland at its most beautiful, and is one of
the cleanest waterways in southern Finland.
Repovesi is known for its idyllic waterways. With the exception
of its large stretches of open water, the area is also suitable for
novice canoeists with navigational skills. The national park itself
does not have marked canoeing routes. You can set off on a longer
canoeing trip, for example from Lapinsalmi Car Park, where there
is a canoe-carrying route to the shore along the rescue path.
There are several jetties for beaching canoes. When making
a route plan, it must be borne in mind that the eastern and north-
eastern parts of the area form the Pahkajärvi Shooting and
Military Exercise Zone, where admittance without a special permit
is forbidden. During the bird nesting season, moving around on
the small lake and pond should be avoided.
Along the western side of Repovesi on Vuohijärvi runs the Savon-
selkä Canoeing Ring Route. This route runs from Voikoski through
Vuohijärvi to Siikakoski and from there on to Verla. The route is
touted as the world’s longest inland canoeing route at 360 km.
The Puun tie canoeing route links Repovesi and Verla.

The River Kymijoki is the outlet for the Kymijoki water system
in Finland. It is one of the Finland’s largest rivers in terms of its
surafce area. It begins at the main lake of the Kymijoki water
system at Päijänne and has five mouths entering the Gulf of
Finland. It is an excellent river for canoeing. Companies offering
a range of different services can be found at:
www.visitkouvola.fi/aktiviteetit/melonta

Supplementary services include guided canoeing and nature
tours on the Väliväylä waterway. Rental and transport services
for canoes are also available.

CANOEING
Active enjoyment in the Kouvola region 1/20156 Active enjoyment in the Kouvola region 1/2015
FISHING
The River Kymijoki – southern Finland’s best salmon river
and other waterways offer ideal and diverse opportunities for
leisure-time fishing. Depending on the location, species such as
Atlantic salmon, trout, grayling, powan, pike-perch, pike and
perch are all attracted to the lures and baits in the water.
You can try out many types of fishing from trolling and spinning
to angling, ice fishing and fly fishing.
With the exception of angling and ice fishing, all other methods
are subject to a permit. The necessary permits depend not only
on the method of fishing and equipment being used but also on
the age of the fisherman and the area of water being fished.
Lure fishing requires a state fishing management payment and
a lure permit, which can be either a provincial lure fishing payment
or a lure permit for local bodies of water. The provincial permit
allows you to go spinning and trolling with one rod in normal areas
of water. Trolling with several rods and fishing in restricted areas
on the other hand always requires the procurement of a local lure
permit. Bait fishing, crayfishing and special methods of fishing
require not only payment of the fishing management fee but also
a fishing permit for local bodies of water. From the fishing permit
and payments table, you can check what permits and payments
are required for your preferred method of fishing.

FRISBEEGOLF
Frisbeegolf is based on the same basic principle as traditional
golf – to get to the end of the course in as few shots (throws) as
possible. In frisbeegolf, the player uses a specially-made flying
disc instead of a club and ball. The player tries to throw the disc
into a metal frisbeegolf basket. Traditional golf uses different
clubs for different kinds of shots. Frisbeegolf, on the other hand,
has different discs for different throwing objectives.
You can play frisbeegolf in Kouvola at many different places,
such as Kouvola Sports Park, at Harjunmäki in Valkeala,
at Koivusaari in Myllykoski and at Liikasenmäki in Jaala.

ROCK CLIMBING
Rock climbing is a sport in which the climber’s mental and
physical attributes combine in the enjoyment of nature.
The Olhavanvuori cliffs in Repovesi National Park rise up to
a height of more than 40 metres. Olhavanvuori is known for its
beautiful and diverse climbing routes both in summer and winter.
In the opinion of climbing enthusiasts, it is the heart of Finnish rock
climbing. In addition to Olhavanvuori, in Kouvola you can also
climb at Mielakka and at Louhos in Kuusankoski.
Skydive Finland ryA word of warning – you may enjoy skydiving! Freefall and

Kouvola has a total of about 180 km of well-maintained ski
tracks, of which 110 km are illuminated. The tracks can be found
on the track map, which is sold at ski huts, swimming pools,
the city’s joint service point, Kouvolan Matkailu and
the Kouvolatalo museum shop in Poikilo.
Iitti offers, among other things, a high-quality ski track on
the route Kausala-Anhava-Kuusankoski-Kausala (about 40 km),
on which it is possible to ski using both the classic and skating
styles. The route starts from the Kausala sports field or the ski hut.
Further information on the tracks and the most recent time
when the tracks were serviced can be checked at
www.kouvola.fi/latuseuranta
www.iitti.fi/vapaa-ajan-palvelut/luonto-ja-ulkoilureitit
Skiing on these tracks is free of charge.
In Kouvola, the ski season may also start at Anjala and Valkeala,
where there are tracks made with artificial snow that are subject
to a charge. Further information about these can be found at
www.anjalanliitto.net
www.valkealankajo.fi
In winter after the ice has formed, you can try out tour skating
on Kuusaanlampi at Savonsuontie 8 Kuusankoski. Kuusaanlampi
is located just a couple of kilometres from the centre of Kouvola.
In addition to skating, you can also ski, go sledging or go ice-
driving in the area. Opening times and other information can be
found at www.visitkouvola.fi, www.seikkailuviikari.fi.

Ski routes in the area of RepovesiIn winter, ski tracks are made mechanically in the area of
Repovesi. Before setting out, the condition of the tracks should be
checked at www.luontoon.fi/repovesi
Many of Repovesi’s lakes and ponds are fed by springs so
the ice may be surprisingly weak. This is good to know when
moving about on skis or snowshoes.
Repovesi adventure daysEvery year in late winter, Repovesi Adventure Days are held.
Before this annual event takes place, detailed information about
it is given on the Metsähallitus website at www.luontoon.fi/
repovesi/ajankohtaista and the visitkouvola.fi website.
