Action Speaks Louder than Words
Non-verbal communicationis as essential in anyinterview as the words yousay. In fact, it tells moreabout you. But there are alot of interviewees who getjitters and nerves before theactual meeting thus causingthem to convey it throughtheir actions.
People usually get nervous because of the panicthey feel in the thought of meeting theinterviewer. The main reason for this is mostlybecause we are already thinking of the outcomeof the interview, worried if we can give the rightanswers and anxious about the questions. Mostpeople don’t realize that we are already buildingan impression even before the start of theinterview proper from the time we open the dooruntil the time we walk out of it.
These non-verbal languageswe convey may affect ourinterview so we really haveto be cautious in how we actin front of our potential boss.
Build Your Confidence
It doesn’t matter whether youare in Jakarta, Indonesia, KualaLumpur, Malaysia, Hongkong,Europe or America to knowthis: being called for aninterview is a big opportunity. It means you have beenevaluated and are a step frombeing hired. They wouldn’tentertain you if you are worthnothing to them.
Focus
You will need to have a goaland focus on that. Review themost commonly askedquestions during an interviewthe facts that you want toshare about yourself and theinformation you havegathered about the company.Remain professionalthroughout the process.
You should also prepare for yourphysical appearance. Choose anoutfit that best suit the company’sfeel without compromising yourown taste. Overdoing your outfitmay make you look dull andboring but if you are applying to abig, corporate company, wearing aflowery dress or comfort shoesmay not be appropriate.
The Interview
1. Eye Contact
– Remember that eyes are the windows to one’ssoul. Maintaining eye contact with yourinterviewer during the whole course of yourinterview is essential but make sure you don’tcreep them out. If you look away while you aretalking, it shows that you lack confidence or mightsend the impression that you are a fraud; if yourinterviewer is talking and you are looking aroundthe room, it shows that you have a very shortattention span and might offend the one speaking.
2. Facial Expression
– Eliminate any negative features. If you are sador tired during those times, throw them out ofthe window and smile. It will not only give theimpression that you are a happy person butmay also lift all your heavy feeling. A genuinesmile can be very contagious. You do not needto plaster that smile all throughout theinterview but always remember to keepcoming back to it.
3. Posture
– This one imposes confidence and power. Standtall, walk tall and sit tall.
4. Gesture
– Hand gestures while we talk are normal tohuman beings. We just need to manage it.Usually when a person is nervous, he is overlyconscious of himself to the point that hisgestures are already not connected with theother parts of his body. Make sure that yourgestures are natural and meaningful.
The most important aspect ofinterviewing is your attitude. Ifyou want to rise above otherswith better experience, bettergrades, or better anything, youwill need to work on developinga highly positive work attitude. The way most employersdifferentiate at the entry level isby candidates' attitudes towardthe job.
