Acting Showcase 2014 BA (Hons) Acting students

We are pleased to present the seventeenth annual agents’ showing of our graduating acting students.

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) was co-founded by Mark Featherstone-Witty and Sir Paul McCartney.Teaching formally began in 1995. The vision was to emphasise collaboration by bringing together all the event disciplines into acoherent and holistic curriculum. For our actors, this would mean developing a broad range of skills in acting within the contextof learning with students from other disciplines.

All students are encouraged to ‘know’ as well as ‘do’ and have the confidence to be both entrepreneurial and creative about theirown careers. Our actors acquire a multi-disciplinary approach to the arts, with a sound knowledge of practice and theory and theability to recognise the opportunities that the entertainment economy provides for versatile and enterprising artists.

This year our showcase has been overseen by three industry professionals: casting director Suzy Catliff, actress and musical directorRuth Alexander Rubin and choreographer Nicola Bolton. We feel that Suzy, Ruth and Nicola have devised a showcase that reveals theindividual talents and abilities of our graduating students.

We have decided to include our international students in the showcase as usual, in spite of the changes to graduate visa status.We hope you will appreciate our commitment to them. The relevant UKBA visa national students are marked with a hashtag (#)by their name in the brochure.

An invitation

Our goal is to provide the kind of learning that will allow graduates to find sustained work. Our latest survey found that 89% ofthose we traced are doing just this. Please feel free to contact me at any point to discuss the work that we’re doing or if you wouldsimply like to come along to have a look around and meet with our staff and students.

Suzy Catliff, CDGDirectorSuzy works as a casting director, theatre directorand lecturer, and is a member of the CastingDirectors’ Guild. Recent casting credits include UK casting for Primeval as well as seven series of The Inspector Murdoch Mysteries forShaftesbury Films.

Other casting includes Casualty, Silent Witness,Hope and Glory III, the award-winning TVdrama/documentary D-Day and acclaimedchildren’s series Sir Gadabout and Bus Life.

Films include A Bunch of Amateurs,Stormbreaker, Swimming Pool, Two Men Went to War. Assistant work includes Sense andSensibility, The English Patient and Wilde.

Suzy has recently directed two new plays inLondon: Love and Lust in Lewisham by StewartPermutt, as part of the Camden Fringe Festival,and Three Little Birds at the New Diorama for Allthe Pigs Theatre Company.

Suzy works extensively in UK drama schools andfilm schools. Her numerous directing creditsinclude Rent, A Chorus Line, Lucky Stiff, Up ‘n’Under and Romeo and Juliet.

Suzy is currently also developing several newprojects for theatre and television.

Ruth Alexander RubinMusical DirectorRuth trained at Rose Bruford College. Sinceleaving, many moons ago, she has worked as both an actress and a sessional lecturer in dramaschools such as Mountview and RADA, and hasbeen teaching at LIPA for the past ten years.

As an actress, her theatre credits include Sweeney Todd, David Copperfield, Oh! What aLovely War and Song of Singapore at theOctagon Theatre, Bolton; Blonde Bombshells of1943 and Jerusalem by Simon Armitage at theWest Yorkshire Playhouse; Les Misérables(national tour); Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet andMacbeth for The Liverpool Shakespeare Festival;and The Comedy of Errors, Sweet William andAccidental Death of an Anarchist for NorthernBroadsides. She also works extensively intelevision and radio.

Nicola BoltonChoreographerNicola trained at Elliott-Clarke College and atAustin Taberner School of Dance. She has workedas a dancer, an actress and a choreographer.

Performance credits include Fame (original WestEnd cast), the UK tours of Joseph and theAmazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Return to the Forbidden Planet as well as The Sound ofMusic at the Apollo Victoria Theatre (London)and Bugsy Malone at Her Majesty’s Theatre(London). Nicola has also performed at HarrogateTheatre; Perth Repertory Theatre; Royal Court,Liverpool; the New Vic, Stoke; LiverpoolEveryman; Oldham Coliseum Theatre; andOctagon Theatre, Bolton, as well as most touringvenues in the UK.

Choreography credits include The HitchhikersGuide to Fazakerley, Royal Court, Liverpool; The Blonde Bombshells of 1943, OldhamColiseum Theatre and New Vic, Stoke; CBeebiesPanto (BBC); Ballroom Blitz, Hull Truck Theatre;Looking for Buddy, Octagon Theatre, Bolton, andLive Theatre, Newcastle; and Desperate to BeDoris, UK tour, for LipService Theatre Company.
