Deaths
Emma Perry Carr Dr. Emma Perry Carr, 92, professor emeritus of chemistry at Mount Holyoke College, died Jan. 7 in Evanston, 111. Dr. Carr had been head of the chemistry department at Mount Holyoke from 1913 to 1946. She encouraged women to seek a profession in science and her work made the college a leading institution in chemical education for women. A greater proportion of its graduates took Ph.D/s in chemistry than from all the women's colleges in the country.
Dr. Carr developed a group research technique in which students and faculty collaborated. Pioneering research was done on unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons.
Dr. Carr studied at Ohio State University and Mount Holyoke and took her B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago. She also studied at Queen's University in Belfast and at the University of Zurich. She received honorary degrees from Allegheny College, Russell Sage College, Hood College, and Mount Holyoke. She was the first recipient of the Garvan Medal of ACS in 1937 and was cited as a world renowned authority on the measurement of absorption spectra. Two decades later she was corecipient with Mary L. Sherrill of Mount Holyoke of the James Flack Norris Award of the ACS Northeastern Section for outstanding leadership in chemical education.
Dr. Carr joined ACS in 1919 and was long active in the Northeastern Section.
Ronald S. Nyholm Sir Ronald S. Nyholm, 55, died Dec. 4, 1971, in an automobile accident near Cam
