2. Kacice - a village where in 1222, the bishop of Cracow, Iwo Odrowąż founded the Cisterian Abbey, which was moved to Mogiła village near Krakow four years later. Then the abbey was changed into a mansion, the building still exists but it is not in a good shape. It has been renovated for over ten years.

……………………………………

3. Niedźwiedź - a village where we can admire a historic church and a palace with a beautiful park. The palace was built at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, firstly it was the property of the Malachowskis’ aristocratic family. Then in 1808 the estate was bought by Stanisław Wodzicki, who changed it into a classical palace and built a circular projection and a portico based on four columns. There is the Wodzickis’ coat of arms – Leliwa in the triangular frontage. The church is similar to the palace in its architecture. There is a beautiful stone belfry next to the church, and a wooden sculpture of Madonna with a Child inside the church.

A walk through the centuries.

In the pictures: Market Square in 1970 and in 2010

The Town’s name probably comes from the craftsmen who made helmets called szłomy for the King’s knights. The first historical information about Słomniki date back to 1287 year. It used to be a hunters and merchants settlement. Unfortunately the city was destroyed several times by the Tartars (1241, 1259, 1287). In 1358 King Casimir the Great located here a town with its civic rights. The Market Square dates back to this period. The location by the merchant route created the possibility of rapid urban growth. The town was getting bigger. The forests around it were the place where the king and his knights used to go hunting. Słomniki hosted Queen Jadwiga and King Jagiełło. Then the Swedish invaded Poland (1655-1660) and the town was destroyed once again. During the Kościuszko Insurrection, the town witnessed many important events. After the battle near Racławice, on the 5th of April, 1794, Tadeusz Kościuszko rested in Słomniki and issued here the proclamation “Nation…want to be free and independent”. He also made Józef Zajączek and Antoni Madaliński the Generals on the Market Square in Słomniki, on the 6th of April. Słomniki lost its civic rights after the fall of the uprising in 1870. After many years, in 1917 the town regained its rights.
