BASF –
Your partner for coating paper and board
BASF, as a leading worldwide supplier
of paper chemicals, has a great tradi-
tion as a binder supplier for paper coat-
ing. As a result of many years of good
relations with the paper industry, we
have a deep understanding of the rela-
tionships between chemistry and appli-
cation technology of paper coating.
Our range of binders comprises the
Acronal® and Styronal® grades, which
have become well known all over the
world by virtue of their outstanding
properties. The Acronal® grades are
dispersions based on acrylic ester and
styrene copolymers, the Styronal® grades
are dispersions based on styrene-buta-
diene copolymers. We developed sever-
al products with different performance
characteristics for a broad range of
applications in coating of graphic papers
and board.
With the new Basonal® binder concept
we are able to supply tailor-made prod-
ucts deriving form an in-depth analysis
of your system by our technical experts
based on a wide variety of monomers
within a short period of time.
Combined with our sophisticated port-
folio of additives, as for example our
thickeners Sterocoll® or cobinders
Acrosol®, we offer the optimum combi-
nation of price and product performance.
Due to our most modern production
technology realized with our Basonal
plant in Ludwigshafen and our new
plant in Hamina (FIN) we deliver prod-
ucts with superior and constant product
quality.

The Acronal® portfolio
Acronal® grades are aqueous dispersi-
ons of acrylic ester and styrene copoly-
mers with a solid content of approx.
50%. Advantages of these dispersions
are excellent print evenness in offset
and rotogravure and a very low level of
thermo- and UV-yellowing and odour.

The Styronal® portfolio
Styronal® grades are aqueous dispersions
of copolymers of styrene-butadiene with
a solid content of approx. 50%.
These products are designed to achieve
differentiated performance characteristics
e.g. excellent binding power, good print-
ability for all common printing processes,
excellent runnability even at high machine
speed.

Basonal® –
The perfect fit for your process
Beside our standard product range,
BASF offers solutions that are tailored
to specific customer needs. We take all
your process components into consid-
eration: coating concept, pigment
system used, machine speed, rheology,
coating equipment, drying configuration,
base paper, environmental requirements
etc. Basonal® is the missing piece of
the puzzle in this complex system.
With our binders we optimise binder
characteristics like binding power, blis-
ter resistance, printing properties and
other technical requirements of your
coated paper. Basonal offers a new
potential for improvement with top per-
formance in obtaining individual proper-
ties and balance on other properties.
BASF has succeeded in drastically
reducing the development time for
binders. This has been achieved by
optimising the whole chain of processes
via technical service, R&D, laboratory,
technical centre, production and logis-
tics. Customers are involved in the
development of the product at an early
stage through technical projects and
research partnerships.
BASF supplies a range of aqueous
dispersions of copolymers of acrylonitrile,
butadiene, butyl acrylate and styrene
under the Basonal® trademark.
To each product of the Basonal®
range is allocated a four-digit number
identifying the customer and a two-
digit serial number.
Please contact your local BASF repre-
sentative if you are interested in these
tailor-made dispersions.
For the introduction of our binders we
offer you technical and commercial
service on the spot. Our marketing staff
are immediately available. Support is
provided by an expert team of experi-
enced application specialists.
In our Paper Technical Center – a com-
plete paper plant in miniature – we are
able to test tailor-made concepts with
you. Trials are run at speed of up to
3333 m/min on the pilot coating facility
– with all state-of-the-art-technologies,
just as in practice.
In the paper laboratory samples from
trials or production are analysed. Using
state-of-the-art testing equipment and
innovative processes, we help you
to identify problems and solve them
quickly. Thus you stay ahead of your
competition.
BASF also has a lot to offer in the
field of commerce. For example,
you can take advantage of BASF ex-
cellent logistics know-how or allow
us to support you on the subject of
e-business.
Take advantage of the service, know-
how and resources of one of the major
chemical producers worldwide.
