HEALTH, FITNESS & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT NEW COURSES

Every time ACRES brings out a brochure, we try to offer a range of new courses that respond to the needsand requests from the local community and which enrich and extend our programme.

NEW LOCATIONSSometimes this means offering successful courses in new locations. For example, the 55 Plus group hasbeen running in Uckfield for many years. It provides a popular social opportunity for people to meet, hearan interesting speaker give a presentation on a different topic each week, allowing an opportunity forquestions, and to share a chat with others over a cup of tea or coffee.

Other courses offered in new locations include an Introduction to Counselling and Interpersonal Skillsoffered as a course in Wadhurst and a ‘Taster’ in Hailsham, Spanish for Holidays at Etchingham VillageHall and Hailsham and Italian for Holidays at Wadhurst.

NEW SUBJECTSThen there are some new subjects such as Environmentally Friendly Allotment Gardening in Uckfield, which shows you how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable way, an Introduction to Playwriting, which provides an insight into writing your own drama, and Jazz Dancing for Beginners which provides afun dance class for adults.

There are some new history courses including a History Pub Walk in Wadhurst which tells you about thehistory of this historical Sussex village by physically visiting key spots in the village, starting and ending atthe Greyhound Public House. What could be nicer on a summer Saturday! World War 1 in Sussex isanother new history course that focuses on a significant moment in world history, but in terms of its localimpact, and an Introduction to Archaeology goes back much further and provides an interesting taste ofthe detective work involved in studying ancient history.

There are some new courses that give an insight into the world of adult education, with a briefIntroduction to Teaching in Adult and Community Learning, and a specialist longer Introduction toteaching life-skills in English and Maths, with an Introduction to Teaching Functional Skills.

There are lots of new Arts and Crafts courses this spring, including the Batik Workshop which instead ofusing hot wax now uses PVA Glue. How times change! Also new, are some bead classes, Get CreativeUsing Wrap Bracelets and Introduction to Beaded Crafts where you will create small gifts, attractive

Spotlight on HailshamACRES covers a wide geographical area and we try to tailor our courses to what local peoplewant. This spring, we’re trying some subjects that are new to the Hailsham area. We areoffering Budgeting Brilliantly, a short course aimed at helping you manage your family financesas effectively as possible, making your money stretch a little further. With your new-foundknowledge, you’ll be able to budget for your summer holidays, and if you want to get evenmore out of a trip abroad, we are offering a five week introductory course, Spanish forHolidays. Children at Hailsham Community College are offered the opportunity to learnSpanish, so this could also provide a useful chance to keep up with the kids.

We are also offering a new art course with An Introduction to Mosaic using Ceramic Pieces.Additionally, we are revisiting some firm creative favourites with an Art Workshop for Beginnersand Creative Writing for Beginners. Find some ‘you time’ and do something different.

Another new arrival in the Hailsham area is our 55 Plus Group. Every week there is a speakeron a wide range of interesting topics, plus the opportunity to meet others and have a chat overa cup of tea. A similar group has been running in Uckfield for a number of years, and webelieve that the Hailsham one will prove just as popular. Why not give it a try.

Another subject that has proved popular in other areas is Counselling and Interpersonal Skills. It’s just a one session ‘Taster’ to begin with, but if there’s sufficient demand, we’ll run a longercourse in the autumn programme.

And finally, we haven’t forgotten our local favourites. There’s Yoga and French on-goingthrough the year, which may take you if you’ve got the right level of knowledge and there’s aspace.

Take a look through our brochure and see what’s being offered near you. It’s all happening inHailsham with ACRES!

bags and jewellery. There are some one day painting classes specialising in topics such as Watercolours,Ink and Wash Portraiture and Landscapes, so if this is of interest, don’t forget to book early to avoiddisappointment. Mosaics continue to be popular, so why not try the Introduction to Mosaic UsingCeramic Pieces course, where you will use china that has perhaps been chipped or cracked, and then isprofessionally broken, in order to create beautiful pieces of art. If you want to know more, then give us acall. Another popular subject is sewing, and we have three new sewing classes on offer, particularly lookingat how to get the most out of your sewing maching to create beautiful crafts.

Within photography we have listened to comments from our students looking to perfect particular areas ofthis exciting subject, and on offer are Portrait studio Lighting and Portrait Landscape Lighting. Notforgetting our learners who have been given a camera as a present, we have a Demystifying your DigitalCamera for Beginners course. Again as requested, a one day workshop on using Word processing andspreadsheets on your iPad will appeal to those both new to iPads and those with some experience, enabling you to both write letters and budget.

If you’ve got some ideas for a new course or a different venue, please get in touch and let us know. AtACRES, we try and offer the courses you want in the places that you want them.
