Acqui Terme (Aich / Oich in local Piemontese dialect)Altitude 164 metres a.s.l. – Population 20.192 (data 2013)Inhabitants “Acquesi” – IAT – Tourist Information CentreTel. 0144 322142; Fax. 0144 770288 [email protected] and description of the Council’s coat ofarmsThe coat of arms, already used between the end of the 18thand beginning of the 19th centuries by Acqui’s City Council, consists of a shield divided into two parts: the top is in silverwith a patent red cross (a reminder of Acqui’s participationin the Crusades, as claimed by the local historians, such asBiorci) and the lower part is in gold with a black eagle inthe middle holding a hare in its claws, with an earl’s coronetrising above. Laurel leaves and wheat embrace the shieldwith a blue ribbon bearing the motto: “Arte et Marte” –of which the most plausible interpretation is: with “intel-ligence and strength the Council is protected”Origins of the nameThe present name originates from the Latin AquaeStatiellae, given by the Romans to the city they foun-ded in the lands of the Liguri Statielli in the 2nd cen-tury BC. In olden times the name was Acquis and laterin vulgar it became Acqui. On 16th March 1956 the word Terme was added bydecree of the President of the Republic.Foundation timesBetween 172 BC and 109 BCInstitution of the Council The first record of the established council dates backto 1135; the oldest statutes attesting the free councilcan be dated to the year 1274.• The present name originates from the Latin oneAquae Statiellae, attributed by the Romans to thecity they founded in the lands of the Liguri Statielli. Thecapital of the Liguri Statielli, Caristum, was seizedand destroyed by the Romans lead by the ConsoleMarco Popilio Lenate in 173 BC. The conquest led tothe progressive Romanization of the territory and its

inhabitants and the birth of a new city, Aquae Statiel-lae, built around the natural thermal waters . • Due to its strategic position and the abundance ofthe thermal springs, Rome decided to transform it intoone of the most important spa cities in the north ofItaly. After the year 109 BC. with the construction ofthe via Aemilia Scauri, that joined Dertona (Tortona)to Vada Sabatia (Vado Ligure), the city became an im-portant centre of commerce and an administrative di-strict. The importance of this road link remainedconstant throughout the centuries. Once it became aMunicipium Romanum, the city began to flourish eco-nomically and socially, until the 2nd century AD. Thisis confirmed by Latin historians that quoted Acqui andits Spas, in fact Plinio recalls them in his Naturalis Hi-storia among the cities “founded among waters”.TheRoman city had a great expansion, almost the samesize as it is today. Itinerario Turisticoin Acqui Terme

Baroque and renaissance portals, and beautifullate-medieval buildings, that lay next to BorgoNuovo and Borgo San Pietro: together they re-present today’s city centre, that has slowlydeveloped towards the hillsides and plains.

Archaeological research has resto-red the image of a wonderful monumental city, with aForum (via Cavour/piazza Addolorata), Spa Centresand baths (piazza Bollente and corso Bagni), a Theatre(via Scatilazzi), an Amphitheatre (via Monteverde), ar-tisan centres (via Cassino) and the imposing Aqueducton the banks of the river Bormida. tury together with the Vado-Savona committee, con-stituted the region that was entrusted to Aleramo.• An important role was also played by the Church, not only on a spiritual level but also on a political andeconomic one. In fact in 978, the Emperor Ottone IIentrusted the Bishop with the governance of the cityand the immediate surroundings that came to consti-tute an enclave within the Aleramic borderland.•During the same years and always thanks to the Bi-shop’s initiative, the construction of the Cathedralbegan, dedicated to the Madonna Assunta; it was laterconsecrated in 1067 by the Bishop Saint Guido(today honoured as the city’s Patron Saint). AnotherEpiscopal initiative led to the construction of the firstdefensive walls that surrounded the highest part of thecity, leaving out the fountain of the “Bollente” springand the church of San Pietro.•During the course of the 12th century municipal in-stitutions were developed (the first certain certificatedates from 1135). These were harsh times for the citycouncil, opposed by the Bishop’s political power, andexternally by the interests of the local noble families(Marquis of Ponzone, del Bosco, del Carrettoand del Monferrato) and by the major cities (Alba,Asti, Genoa and Savona).• The birth of the city Alessandria in 1168 determinedthe crisis in both the local Acquesi institutions: the citycouncil was suffocated by the arrogance of this newyoung city, whilst the Diocese risked being absorbedby the new one in Alessandria.• The wars that took place in Piedmont during the 13thcentury did not resolve these difficulties, therefore in1278, in order to obtain safety and stability it submit-ted itself to the Marquis of Monferrato, which enabledthe city to maintain a certain level of self- government.• Acqui followed the happenings of the Monferratountil it passed on to the Paleologi family, successorsof the Aleramici dynasty in 1305.• The 14th century was a troublesome period, bet-ween wars and plagues even though the expansion of

the territory by the Visconti family did not removeAcqui from the Monferrato reign .• A more favourable outcome occurred during the15th century, with the solidification of the Monferrinostate (reflected by the reconstruction of the castleand the expansion of the city’s defensive walls) alongwith the development of the harbour in Savona, whichallowed and favoured the local economy to flourish.A general prosperity arose, testified by the architec-tural aspects of the public and religious buildings, thatstill today feature 15th century characteristics.• Another extremely important aspect that highlightsthe importance of the Acquese merchant class, is re-presented by the painting of the Triptych of the Ma-donna of Montserrat, commissioned in Spain at theend of the 15th century by a wealthy Acquese mer-chant, Francesco della Chiesa, to an Hispanic-Flemishpainter Bartolomeo Bermejo in Latin called “Rubeus”,today preserved in the Cathedral’s sacristy .• Even though the activities of the Thermae neverceased, they played an important role in the generalrecovery: during 1435 Nicolò d’Este came to visit andthe Paleologi family’s stays were also frequent. To-wards the end of Medieval times, precisely around1480, thanks to the constructions promoted by theCardinal Teodoro, brother of the Marquis Guglielmo VIIIof Monferrato, the thermal buildings on the other sideof the Bormida river underwent a vast developmentthat during the 16th century lead them to completelyoust the central ones. With the extinction of the Paleo-logi family in 1536, the Monferrato passed over to theGonzagas. The situation remained unchanged until the17th century, a time in which only some baths werefunctioning, whereas on the other side of the Bormida, the thermal establishment progressively expanded, until in 1687 it housed more than 100 rooms. Followinga disastrous landslide that took place, the Duke ofMantova sustained entirely at his expense the rebuil-ding of the structures, that to this day, even thoughthey’ve undergone many changes, represent the main

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Piazza DuomoMap N° 5)Construction for the Cathedral began by the BishopPrimo (989-1018) and it was later consecrated in 1067by Saint Guy, Bishop and Patron Saint of the city. Ithas a Latin cross plan divided into one nave with fouraisles. From the Romanesque period the apses and be-autiful crypt are visible. The interior was completely re-furbished with stuccos and frescos between the 16th and

19th centuries, whilst the bell tower was completed in1479. The 17th century pronao merges in well with theside porticos that line the Cathedral’s square. Notewor-thy is the great portal, a masterpiece by Antonio Pila-corte (1481) and inside the pulpit built at the beginningof the 19th century using reused marble slabs and thebaptistery in a rococo style. The left transept houses St.Guy’s altar and the altarpiece by the Genoese artistDavid Corte. In the Chapter House the triptych of OurLady of Montserrat, a masterpiece by the Spanish pain-ter Bartolomeo Bermejo is preserved; this opera was re-

structure of the “Antiche Terme” hotel. From the1700s, Acqui gained its current characteristics of amajor thermal resort renowned for its mud baths. In1708 it was assigned to the Savoia, together with allthe Monferrato territory, thus entering a modern stategoverned by an enlightened despotism. Important pu-blic works were promoted, such as the diversion ofthe Rio Medrio and the military thermal spas. The in-stitution of the Jewish ghetto gathered the numerousand ancient Jewish communities all together in piazzadella Bollente, in the historic centre. At the end of the 18th century the revolutionary mes-sage arrived, and with it the Armeè; Napoleon Bona-parte stayed here in 1796, to whom (the ImperialGovernment) we owe the construction of the provin-cial road Savona – Acqui – Alessandria. In the 19thcentury, the population increased and the demolitionof the walls and urban development took place. Withthe construction of the Carlo Alberto Bridge, a di-rect connection with the area across the river and thethermal springs, was finally realized. The first railwayline connected Alessandria to Acqui in 1858, and laterin 1870 the one for Savona followed, and in 1893 theone for Asti and Genoa. These are thanks to the va-luable works wanted and promoted by the mayor Giu-seppe Saracco, to whom we must also beappreciative for the Greek style temple, built to em-

phasize the importance of the thermal water, and forthe piazza that presents itself in today’s monumentalforms. He boosted many public works, was nominatedpresident of the Senate, and enabled to combine effi-cient political reforms, especially in the pension sectorand in the safeguarding of Italian and foreign migration. The end of the century, known as the Belle Epoqueperiod, is probably the most flourishing in the localThermae that lasted up until the Second World War.New theatres and a casino animated social life, and inthe city centre the Nuove Terme Spa building wasinaugurated. In the 1930’s a development took placeof the thermal buildings, sustained by the government, and a swimming pool was constructed that remainedfor many years the largest open-air pool in Europe. In the meantime, various businesses such as the Bor-doni MIVA glass factory and other smaller businessesin the oenological and manufacture business were setup. Today, the Regie Terme Acqui are classified bythe National Health Service (Servizio SanitarioNazionale) as First Class Category, and the presenceof thermal spas, modern beauty farms with thermalswimming pools, and avant-garde facilities, togetherwith a selection of historic and modern hotels makeAcqui a perfect tourist destination for those searchingfor rest, tranquillity, relaxation, cultural and gastrono-mic tours
