Methodists should continue to use this same tool when determining their actions for all of life’s circumstances. The Quadrilateral helps create balance. Tradition helps provide foundation for our experience and reason, while experience and reason help keep tradition from being a barrier to new ideas. The Bible of course is what binds us to God through all phases of our lives. It may be helpful to also know that we don’t have to rely solely on our own experiences, traditions, or reason. When trying to understand something, we are also able to read and talk with other people and appreciate someone else’s perspective. It is because of this that I own more books than I will probably ever have time to read in their entirety. Because I have come to trust some authors more than others, I have more of their books on my shelf. Some of my favorite authors are: C.S. Lewis, Philip Yancey, and Henri Nouwen. While I have a number of their books on my shelves, not every book I own and find helpful, is written by someone with whom I agree. It’s important to understand the experience and reason of people who have ideas with which I disagree. My disagreement does not make their experience or belief any less valid. In future editions of the Friendly Flyer I will introduce you to some of my favorite and least favorite authors and their books. I, and I’m sure others, would also appreciate the sharing of other’s favorite authors and books. If a particular book generates enough interest, a book study group could be formed. As we share more and more of the people and ideas that inspire or challenge us, we become better able to talk honestly about difficult topics. At the same time, the more we talk about difficult things, the easier it is to continue to do so. We are living in a time of great disagreement on any and all areas of life and lifestyle. We who claim Christ must learn to accept people as they come, just like Jesus did. Acceptance does not mean agreement. It is also important that we who claim Christ, learn to disagree agreeably. We are perfectly positioned to help our community and to set that exact example. It is and will continue to be a work in progress. In the meantime, enjoy the Summer and sink into some great Summer reading.

From the Pastor’s Desk ~

God Bless and Keep You,

Pastor Alice Ann

In our Methodist tradition we follow in the footsteps of our founding fathers, John and Charles Wesley. During their time at Oxford they, along with others, formed the Holy Club. Its purpose was to live out Jesus’ teaching as listed in Matthew 25:34-36:

Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ (NRSV)

The members of the Holy Club started soup kitchens, visited those who were imprisoned, and even walked with them to the gallows. They did all that they could to take care of the widows and orphans. They started Sunday Schools to teach people to read and write, and introduced people to the Bible by using it as the reading primer.

In deciding what tasks to take on, Wesley and the others used four standards. The first and most important was the bible. What does the bible say or not say about a particular topic? Next they looked at Church tradition. How has the church understood and dealt with a particular issue in the past? Next on the list was their own reason. What did their God-given intellect tell them, and then how had they themselves experienced the circumstances? Today we call these four things (Bible, Tradition, Reason and Experience) the Quadrilateral.

Sponsoring

Flowers and Bulletins 2016 Flower and Bulletin sponsorship charts are now in the narthex. Sponsoring altar flowers is a simple way to glorify God and beautify the altar. They can be placed in honor of someone, in memory of someone, in celebration of a birthday, anniversary, or other milestone, or just to give thanks for God's blessings. Your sponsorship and dedication will be printed in the bulletin for that Sunday. The same goes for sponsoring bulletins. The cost for sponsoring altar flowers is $40 (quoted recently by Albanese Florist) and the cost for sponsoring bulletins is $10. Please consider signing up. First, write your name and dedication on the chart. Second, if sponsoring flowers, call Albanese Florist (610-588-0441) or J.C. Bloom Designs (610-588-3855) and place an order with them under the Ackermanville UMC account. Third, place the cost of flowers (or bulletins) in the offering plate on Sunday in a separate envelope, designating that it is for the cost of the flowers or bulletins. Thank you.

Thank you for our faithful giving! Dear Ackermanville United Methodist Church, and the

BLAST Youth Group

Thank you for your generous food donation, and thank you

to BLAST for the money donation. Please be assured Your

donations will be put to good use in providing food and other necessities to hundreds of families in the Slate Belt. The

need for these services continues to grow every month.

With the assistance of our many dedicated volunteers and

graciousness of Pastor Phil Karasiewicz and Steve Frei, we

consider it a privilege to continue this mission in which we

provide services to 400+ families a month. This service

would not have been possible without the late Sherma

LaBarre Godshalk, who started this food pantry due to her

endless desire to help those in need. We also want to thank

the individuals who have passed on who dedicated their lives

to helping others. However, it wouldn't be possible to

continue without your support. Thank you again for donating to the Portland-Upper Mt. Bethel Food Pantry, Inc.

“Really? How do you know?” the teacher asked. “You know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven...”

NEWS: FOOD RELIEF IN ETHIOPIA Ethiopia is experiencing one of the worst droughts in decades. The El Niño weather

event continues to wreak havoc on communities and families in numerous parts of the world.

As a result of the drought, malnutrition rates have greatly increased — 450,000 children are expected to be treated for severe malnutrition, and a further 2.2 million children and pregnant and lactating women will be treated for moderate acute malnutrition.

The latest 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document released in December 2015, estimates that this year, 6 million children are at risk from hunger, disease, and lack of water.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) recently approved a grant to support partner International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) in providing a three-month supply of nutritious food, a corn-soya blend, to about 7,080 people in the Kewet Woreda, North Shoa Zone, Amhara Region of Ethiopia. Food supplies will go to malnourished children under 5 years of age, pregnant and lactating mothers, and those living with HIV and AIDS.

Mission Statement Compelled by Christ to be a voice of conscience on behalf of the people called Methodist, UMCOR works globally to alleviate human suffering and advance hope and healing.

PRAYER: WEST VIRGINIA FLOODS Late last week, West Virginia experienced one of its worst flood

disasters ever. The floods and severe weather claimed the lives of at least 23 people, left thousands of West Virginia residents without power, and damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes. UMCOR is in contact with the disaster response team of the West Virginia Annual Conference, and 1,500 cleaning buckets and 1,500 health kits are on their way to the conference. West Virginia Annual Conference Bishop Sandra L. Steiner Ball, offered this prayer of support:

"I will not abandon you or leave you as orphans in the storm — I will come to you." —John 14:18 (The Living Bible) Oh God, hold your children of West Virginia in your strong arms once again. You know the loss, the crisis, the chaos, the pain that is being experienced by those affected by storm and flood. In the midst of this adversity, please be very present with the families and the communities who have been devastated and are searching for things and for answers. Remind them that you are present and reveal yourself to them in ways and through people which bring them comfort, strength, and hope. Assure them and us that you are in control, no matter what. We thank you Lord, for your love that will not let us go. Wrap your arms of love around those who are in shock and pain; those who are in the midst of fear and doubt. Help us to both experience your presence and resurrection power, and to be the body of Christ, the light and life of Christ, to those who feel lost. It is in the name of Christ, Your Son, our Savior, that we pray this simple prayer believing in Your power to bring all Your people through the storm, into recovery, new life, healing, hope, and peace. Amen!

Gifts to U.S. Disaster Response, Advance #901670 supports UMCOR’s response to emergencies like this one in the United States.
