Overview of Acid Gas Cleaning/Gas Treating

Gas Cleaning is used in both gas processing and refining applications

Natural and Petroleum Gases contain undesirable components that include:

– Water

– Sulfur compounds, especially H2S

– Carbon Dioxide

“Acid Gas Cleaning” relates to the removal of:

– Hydrogen Sulfide

– Carbon Dioxide

– And other related contaminants

The New Acid Gas Cleaning Functionality

New fluid package: Acid Gas

Support the following:

– CO2 and H2S removal

– Mercaptans and Trace Components

– Commonly used amines: MDEA, MEA, DEA, PZ, PZ+MDEA, DGA, DIPA, Sulfolane-DIPA, Sulfolane-MDEA, TEA

– Heat Stable Salts

High performance via two calculation models:

– Efficiency based (majority of user community)

– Advanced Modeling (very few expert users)

Efficiency Model

Advanced Modeling

16

Mass transfer rate-based calculation model

Mass and energy balances around individual phases on individual tray or packed segments

Conventional thermodynamic phase equilibrium

Equilibrium across interfaces

Chemical kinetic effects on mass transfer rates, particularly in the liquid phase

Mass and heat transfer rate models for transport across interfaces

Equilibrium-based model only takes first two into account

– Overall stage, not individual phases

17

Equilibrium model

Equilibrium model makes specific assumptions

– Considers bulk liquid and gas phases to be in equilibrium

Assumptions are flawed

For an amine treating system, equilibrium-based models are not sufficient

– Cannot be extrapolated to conditions that have not been fitted with plant data

– Mass transfer rate-based models are appropriate

18

Efficiency model

Simplified model that uses rate-based calculations to calculate the Murphree efficiencies for each component

Some simplifications are applied

Accounts for main effect of mass transfer resistance and rate-limiting kinetic reactions

Default solution model in Aspen HYSYS

User can switch to fully rigorous rate-based model (Advanced Modeling method in Aspen HYSYS)
