DESIGN IS CREATING AND BRINGING TO LIFE NEW PRODUCTS

BILINGUAL - BICLUTURAL

Born in the USA to two French parents, I have moved and travelled all my life. I am looking for a new destination, to

discover and learn new things, hopefully close to you!

International School of Design:- Valenciennes, France (2 years)

- Pune, India (3 years)

My home town:- Lyon, France- Boston, USA

FIGHTING OFF MOSQUITOESDESIGN IS CREATING AND BRINGING TO LIFE NEW PRODUCTS

1 MONTH PERSONAL PROJECT - MAR ‘15

REPELLENT - RELIEF

Everyone has the tools to fight off mosquitoes but never actually uses them because they are greasy, smelly, hard to

apply and to carry around with you, and only temporary.

USER INSIGHTS

Page 6: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

TARGETING DETAILS

The concept of merging repellent and relief together came very quickly, from that point on ideation was mostly about

figuring out details on the product to make it coherent.

POST-IT IDEATION

Page 7: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

FOAM MODEL TESTING

Working in the workshop and testing various different shapes allowed me to find and refine a shape that fits in the user’s

hands comfortably no matter how the product is held.

FINAL PRODUCT

Page 10: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

QUICK, EASY, NO WASTE

Thanks to a mesh membrane that lets the insect repelling solution slowly seep through, the user can now protect himself

quickly, easily and without any wastage.

INSECT REPELLENT

Page 11: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

THERMOLABILE REACTION

The itching sensation of a mosquito bite can be stopped by applying heat to it thanks to a UV light, switched on when the

user touches both metal plates.

ITCH RELIEF

REFILL THE TANK OR CHANGE THE BATTERIES

A strap on the product makes it easily to find and pull out of any bag. The small badge on the strap is meant to be used as a screwdriver to open the repellent tank or the battery door.

SALEWA ROCK CLIMBING SHOEDESIGN IS GENERATING NEW IDEAS IN EXISTING PRODUCTS

3 WEEK PERSONAL PROJECT - SEP 2013

Page 14: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

PERFECT TO CLIMB, BUT TERRIBLE TO REST

Rock climbing shoes cramp your feet up, allowing you to better hook and hold the wall, a contradicting duality, as they

are extremely painful when belaying or resting.

USER INSIGHTS

Page 15: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

STRAP AROUND THE FOOT FOR BETTER CONTROL

Inspired by medical strapping, the straps go around the foot, interacting with the sole rather than just the upper in classic

shoes, allowing a better and wider control of the shoe.

CONCEPT DETAIL

Page 16: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

FIT SALEWA’S DESIGN LANGUAGE

The final shape for the shoe was mainly dictated by where the straps should be for the best efficiency, and how I wanted

the user to interact with them.

PRODUCTIVE OFFICE SPACE FOR AKGDESIGN IS TO HAVE A VISION AND BUILDING A PROCESS TO LEAD YOUR TEAM TO IT

4 MONTH TEAM PROJECT - OCT 2015/JAN 2016

Page 20: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

PRODUCTIVE OFFICE SPACE

The brief that was given to us by AKG was to imagine a new typology of audio products for working environments, helping

professionals be more focused and effective.

THE BRIEF

Page 21: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

LEADING AND MANAGING A TEAM

I had the chance to co-lead a team with my good friend Abbas. We had to create a vision a process for the project as well as

manage three 3rd year students eager to learn.

THE TEAM

Page 22: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

THE UNDERRATED IMPORTANCE OF SOUND

The first step of our analysis phase was to look into what sounds are and how they work. During our research we realized how much sound is around us but how little attention we give it.

AUDIO AND SOUNDS

Page 23: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

A DELICATE BALANCE OF SPACE, LIGHTS AND SOUNDS

We looked into what being productive means, but more importantly what factors may influence one’s productivity

and how they intricately influence each other.

WHAT IS PRODUCTIVITY

Page 24: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

UNDERSTANDING WHO WE ARE DESIGNING FOR

We looked at different office spaces in order to better understand how people interact and function in them. We decided to work on three different spaces, 1, 5 and 18 people.

OFFICE SPACES

Page 25: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

ETHNOGRAPHY RESEARCH

We profiled a wide group of people looking for different job experiences, and personalities. We interviewed 20 candidates

about music, their work environment and productivity.

20 USER INTERVIEWS

Page 26: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

EASY TO RELATE TO YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE

We decided to translate the insights we pulled out of the interviews into cartoons, helping keep the project simple and

understandable, we used these for our ideation phase.

Page 27: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

NEW IDEAS, SMART CONCEPTS

We used the 90+ situations and combined them with three specific types of offices, creating three final concepts: a head-phone amp, an interactive projector and a personal assistant.

CREATIVITY SESSION

Page 28: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE

P14 helps manage your time with the renowned pomodoro technique, organizing and dividing your day into work periods

of 25 minutes, allowing to achieve more in less time.

ADAPTABLE TRAVEL SHOEDESIGN IS BEING PART OF A TEAM5 MONTH TEAM PROJECT - SEP 2013/JAN 2014

Page 31: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

A SHOE CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR TRIP

We are constantly travelling, always adapting to our environment. Shoes mix performance, aesthetics, and comfort,

according to what you do and where you go.

TRAVELLING & SHOES

Page 32: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

WHAT THEY NEED, WHAT THEY WANT

We created and analysed 15+ potential user profiles, each travelling for a different purpose, to a different place in order

to better understand their behaviour.

USER OPPORTUNITIES

Page 33: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

YOUNG, DYNAMIC AND DRIVEN

We built a 2 day scenario around our user’s business trip to better understand his needs and wants, in terms of functionality

and perception.

BUSINESS ROUTINE

Page 34: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

QUICK IDEATION

We organized quick creativity sessions around different shoe parts and axis that linked back to our target and brief. This

allowed us to come up with a large number of ideas.

POST-IT SESSIONS

Page 35: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

DETAILED CONCEPTS

By mixing post-its together, we created concepts around five major axis, answering our user’s precise problems, needs and

wants. These are the concepts I came up with.

A4 SKETCHES

Page 36: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

DUAL CORE

Our final shoe is cut into two parts, the front is formal and elegant, while the back is active and comfortable, hence

creating a formal yet sportable shoe.

FINAL PROPOSITION

Page 37: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

CLICK PLAY!

After writing the storyboard, I was responsible to shoot and edit a 2min video that retraced our user’s day, in order to properly explain our shoe, and how it was meant to be worn.

USER SCENARIO

Page 38: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

A SUPER-TECHNICAL FORMAL SHOE

Using the paradox between the two cores of the shoe as our key styling element, we merged a strong urban elegance to a

dynamic shape, accentuated by sporty details.

DESIGN LANGUAGE

Page 39: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FIRST IMPRESSION

The cut on the packaging was aligned to the ones on the shoe for a better display but also to reflect the product’s design

values, creating a global experience for the customer.

GLOBAL EXPERIENCE

Page 40: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

NIKE BRANDING

Because this is a formal shoe, we decided to drop off the Nike swoosh, replacing it with a unique and subtler graphic tdesign,

stamped onto the sole when purchasing.

SOCIAL NETWORK FOR DESIGNERSDESIGN IS CREATING A GLOBAL EXPERIENCE FOR THE USERS

MASTERCLASS PERSONAL PROJECT - 1 WEEK - APR 2015

Page 42: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

STUDENTS, ALUMNI, FACULTY

We all use various different social medias to connect with each other. However, none of them are properly suited for a school,

to help each other out and keep in contact with alumni.

BASIC ARCHITECTURE

This crucial step in a UI/UX design allows to map out the functions and features of the app. This helps understanding how things will work together and guide the rest of the design.

MENU TREE

Page 44: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

FROM IDEATION TO FINAL SCREENS

I use quick and rough sketches to ideate on the user interaction and experience. Wireframes allow me to rapidly validate the

graphic design before starting the final renders.

BEYOND DESIGNDESIGN IS A DISCIPLINE YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING

6 MONTH INTERNSHIP IN A DESIGN CONSULTANCY

Page 47: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

UNDERSTANDING THE USER IS HALF THE WORK DONE

Focus groups, interviews, observing behaviors, I had the chance to take part in multiple user analysis projects or research

phases, further developing my ethnography skills.

ETHNOGRAPHY

Page 48: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

ADAPTING TO DIFFERENT PROJECTS AND TOOLS

Sketching in Beyond was only done on cintiq, this gave me the opportunity to create a new skill set, combining this new technique to my inspiration process boosted my creativity.

SKETCH AND STYLING

Page 49: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

PRODUCTS ARE PHYSICAL, NOT DIGITAL

One of the best way to validate concepts are models, no matter the scale or level of detail. I also realized during my internship

how important it can be for a client’s understanding.

FOAM-CORE MODELS

Page 50: Achille Perrin Portfolio 2016

BUILDING NEW SKILLS

During my internship, I greatly improved my 3D modeling skills, refined my understanding of surfaces. I got to play around with 3D printing, both validating and correcting my designs.

During his internship, Achille had the responsibility to design products for Lacroix and more specifically, ski gloves. This professional experience allowed him to get used to imperativeslinked to the development of technical outwear and products in general, as well as acquiring and improving his design skills, particularly in the textile domain. During his internship, Achile turned out be very rigorous and showed initiative by taking his responsibilities. His team work, flexibility and motivation

were key to all the projects he was involved in.
